Will we finally get Randy vs Fedor now?

So everyone is losing their minds today over Strikeforce selling itself to Zuffa and there are plenty of conversations already about that. Instead I thought I would stick to one long forgotten question that should still have a bit of meaning to us MMA old timers. Will Fedor vs Randy finally happen before both guys retire? In September of 2008 Dana said that if he could sign Fedor he would give Randy that fight, well Dana still doesn't have Fedor Emelianenko signed but he does now have a way to give Randy Couture the fight he's been wanting for years for. Fedor vs Randy on Showtime (or heaven help us all on CBS) would be huge even though it's a couple of years past it's due date and it would give both Fedor and Randy a fight they could both be happy to call their retirement match. It would give Fedor a true showcase fight to ride off into the sunset with and also would allow Randy to mark that last check off his MMA bucket list before he heads off into the hall of fame sunset. Like Chuck vs Wanderlei it's probably too late for it to make a real difference in terms of either guy's career or the standings of the sport in general but just like with Chuck vs Wandy sometimes late is still better than never.

Nope, Randy will wall-n-stall Machida to a decision victory

He’ll get another title shot and do the same thing to Shogun becoming the UFC LHW champ ONCE AGAIN.

Paving the way for Fedor's UFC debut at 205.

Sorry, I think we were both dreaming.

The winner of Fedor vs Randy for the UFC 205lb title could then fight Dan Henderson to unify with the Strikeforce 205lb belt(there is now a real chance that Henderson could bring a third outside belt to the UFC for a unification bout…….).

:D

Put it on a card with Kid Yamamoto vs Urijah Faber so I can also cross that off my bucket list.

I know Dana said “no Superfights” but man wouldn’t it be great to get a CBS card with a couple of true “Superfights”? A Randy vs Fedor double retirement bout would be a massive headliner for a true network worthy card. Dana may not be fans of the guys at Showtime but I don’t think he has as much of a problem with the overlords at CBS.

I think it would be smart of the UFC to take advantage of any possible CBS shows. I know they don’t want to stack network tv with a UFC card because it could damage their ppvs, but there would be a huge upside to blowing their loads on a few stellar CBS cards before they fold Strikforce. Just for the exposure MMA would get. An exposure that only the UFC could really take advantage of.

If it was Strikeforce branded then it wouldn"t really harm the UFC’s PPV standing or either fighter at this point. One of the good things about Randy being on the edge of retirement (for the third time?) is that a loss to anyone doesn’t hurt him and one of the good things about Fedor losing two in a row is that he doesn’t have his aura to protect anymore. It’s just two legends settling the score before they ride off into the sunset.

The UFC doesn’t want to put Fedor on a PPV under the Strikeforce contract (because M-1 Global gets half) and if Randy loses to Machida coming up he doesn’t have anything else to prove/target in the UFC. It turns into a casual fan dream fight that really doesn’t have much of a way to harm Zuffa regardless of who wins or loses and it’s not PPV viable due to M-1 so CBS makes the most sense (provided that CBS would go for it).

I can almost guarantee that Randy will sit at Dana’s door till he makes that fight happen. It’s the last big pay day for him and a great way for the two of them to end their careers.

Just out of curiosity

Is there any evidence behind your statement besides the hype and interviews of a few years back.

Did I make the statement like I was reporting a story? Is there a better fight for Randy today.

You said almost guarantee, I was just checking if something came up more recently that I hadn’t heard.

Are you taking a loss to Machida for granted?

Because a UFC LHW title fight would be much bigger in the grand scheme of things than a fight with E-Fed.

Say he beats Machida. I think it would have to be a decisive KO. A wall and pray isn’t going to set the world on fire for him. Evans is still in line for the next title shot. And Jackson would be ahead of him as well, I would think. Phil Davis, etc. Randy has made it clear what kind of life he wants now. In reality, there is no bigger fight for him. Randy vs Fedor on CBS would be a major event.
