I got maia
by just being better

As long as Maia doesn't keep the fight standing for more than....1.5 seconds
He should be able to win.

He survived 25 minutes with Anderson Silva
Ok ok. There was only about 13 minutes of agression by Silva. Nonetheless, I think he is qualified for a couple of seconds with Munoz.
Nate Marquardt also made him fly.
Grove caught him a couple of times as well.

Grove caught him? I mean he landed he couple of good strikes but they didn’t even faze Maia, so to say he caught him is a little much IMO.

is it just me or does Demian look like an undersized MW? Kind of like Fedor for HW or RC for that matter.
If it goes down I give it to Demian.
Really? Maia is taller and weighs more.

But we are talking biggerness….. Aren’t we?

Isnt GSP like 195, while Maia and Akiyama are both in the low 190s
by Willie Dicker on Mar 11, 2011 8:03 PM EST up reply actions
GSP said he weighed 187 a few weeks ago. Maia is taller and looks to have a bigger frame.

Hmm... Interesting...
Not sure how Maia is going to get it to the mat against a wrestler of Munoz’s caliber. Wait, what am I saying, he threw Chael to the mat. Maia by submission once Munoz gasses.
Fitch's only fan. It's lonely, being me.
I think that Sonnen totally overlooked the possibility of Maia taking him down.
Chael probably thought “I got two metal plates in that says that Maia can’t take me down”. And then BAAAAMMMM!! A picture perfect lateral drop.
If Munoz is smart, and I think he is, he won’t make the same mistake.
Since I've mentioned it
we can have one more look at that

as if Maia has shown spectacular cardio recently....
by Anton Tabuena on Mar 11, 2011 8:32 PM EST up reply actions
I think Maia’s cardio issue was more due to the fact that he was actively grappling the entire rounds he fought. Thats gonna tire you out no matter how good you are way more than a lay and pray
by MemphisMike on Mar 11, 2011 10:09 PM EST up reply actions
Good point...
And if he struggles with Munoz getting him to the mat, such as heavy clinch-work, I won’t say that’s out of the realm of speculation.
I’m going to trust his cardio over Munoz’ though, since he’s already fought a 5-rounder against Andy, and actually outlasted Silva cardio-wise… Spider needs to work on his endurance dancing better.
Fitch's only fan. It's lonely, being me.
they stood around for majority of the fight.
I wouldn’t give that as an example for a bout where he had good cardio… He was slowing down on 3 rounders after that.

You are just being a Buzz Killington all around... Lol.
I’m still sketchy about Maia getting him down in the first place… I just felt dumb for saying that when he made Chael look ridiculous. But with Munoz’s wrestling pedigree, plus his body frame… I see it possibly being pretty damn impossible for Maia to get it to the mat, other than pulling guard… And neither have good striking, but Munoz does have some heavy hands…. Not a fight I’d bet on, that’s for sure.
Fitch's only fan. It's lonely, being me.
As much as I would love for Munoz to ground and pound him out....
I fear for the well-being of his neck and limbs.
Fappity fap
This won’t go the distance.

They need to be careful with this card!
Brock Lesnar vs. Junior dos Santos
Shane Carwin vs. TBA
Demian Maia vs. Mark Munoz
Kenny Florian vs. Diego Nunes
These fights are (imo) must fights for the PPV. I don’t want them to do what they did at UFC128, meaning i end up not being able to see a top5 fighter in his division. No more than one more great fight here please.
Who cares if Munoz becomes a contender
He likely wouldn’t fight Silva. You know, the whole Blackhouse thing.
I should have satyed out of Cain’s strawberry patch.
I thought he trains in Sacramento with those miniature alpha males and with vera?
by Willie Dicker on Mar 11, 2011 7:15 PM EST up reply actions
He has the Reign gym in Orange County.
I know Joe Henle trains there and I think Mayhem frequently does too. Vera trains out of Chula Vista. Neither are anywhere close to Alpha Male.
"Someone is WRONG on the internet. What do you want me to do? LEAVE? Then they'll keep being wrong!"
-Randall Munroe
I was thinking the same thing
But then I remembered that Phil Davis is fighting Lil Nog and seemed totally cool about it. Maybe they have different levels of the Blackhouse thing.
I recall Munoz helping those guys with wrestling quite a bit. And didn’t he open his own gym?
I should have satyed out of Cain’s strawberry patch.
From what I recall from Silva’s interviews before UFC 126, he always talked about how Belfort disrespected him when he asked for a title shot after spending some time training with Team Nogueira.
And then there’s the story that says that there’s not a “Team Blackhouse” and that the whole things is just a facility were they can train together.
I even remember a Silva interview to a brazilian blog, were he clarified that José Aldo doesn’t belong to his team, and that Aldo trains with Nova Uniao.
So my conclusion is: Blackhouse is a place were fighters with some affinity — most of them under the tutelage of Jorge Guimaraes and Ed Soares, other are just invited — can spend sometime training together and that the whole comrade and respect thing is related to the Team Nogueira.

So let me get this straight: the WWE has gone from the powerful "Austin 3:16" to the dominant and iconic "Can you smell what the Rock is cooking?" all the way to... I guess he’s trying to downplay titties, but I’m sure people are calling him that behind his back :p
I didn’t know he was cut by the UFC, I thought he went to Afghanistan or Iraq or something and hadn’t got back yet, but looks like he’s fighting already. good to hear.
yo no quiero hacer mas nada
He's on a 3 fight losing streak
bookended by James McSweeney and Tony Kryptonite Loez…I don’t know how good it is to hear that he’s still fighting!

With the power Munoz has, this could be a short fight
But with the BJJ Maia has, this could be a short fight. I think it depends on who can impose his will. Maia took down Sonnen, but he did fail to take down Anderson

munoz has a punch in him that can take out maia like nate did
munoz needs to win in the first round because once he starts slowing down. maia is going find a hole, a trip or pull guard, then a limb or his neck and it’s over.
Maia can win his next ten in a row if he wants to
There’s no way they’re letting him fight Anderson again. Ever.

It was his fault he didn’t do anything about it but gawk.

is there someone at 185 that can beat AS standing?

No
But Maia is just a step above Leites as far as wanting to keep it standing.

Maia by sub
He needs to keep his hands high and get it down, or let munoz take it down.
Maia's too smart to make that Marquardt mistake again.
Maia by sub.
I like using semi-colons; they make me feel smart.
This card is great
I’m counting 7 guys who are top 10 in their weight class here
Lesnar, JDS, Carwin, Maia, Florian, Nunes, Omigawa, and Poirier isn’t far off from the top 10
Bisping's getting Chael.

Like
Munoz off a couple of good wins getting a step up. Munoz is pretty tough when he smells blood but I like Maia
Why is it because Munoz sparked Dolloway that all of a sudden Maia has to get this to the ground as quick as possible?
Has Munoz all of a sudden become an elite striker and not a wrestler?
No, he just has powerful hands
And Maia is shaky in his striking defense

not to mention
while Munoz can take down Maia, he will have a big risk of getting subbed. So as long as the fight stays standing, Munoz is gonna be alright.

Pretty risky
…going out on a limb with Maia! ;)
To save me some time on 25% of all threads, here's the universal answer to the Fedor-debate: Fedor is the most accomplished MMA fighter ever. That is a fact. If he still is the best fighter at this point in time is up for debate.

This is one of the best stylistic match-ups i can think of in any division.
Not that I condone facism or any ism for that matter. Isms are in my opinion, not good. A person shouldn't believe in an ism, he should believe in himself.
I quote John Lennon, "I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me". Good point there, after all he was the walrus. I could be the walrus. Wouldn't change the fact I have to bum rides off of people.
yep.
I’m obviously rooting for Munoz, but stylistically, this is a great great fight.
by Anton Tabuena on Mar 11, 2011 11:53 PM EST up reply actions
Talk about trying to push Munoz too hard. He loses to a top 5 guy, then beats an unranked fighter…and gets another top 5 guy. Style matchup’s great. Logical booking? Not so much.
Still a Beer Monster.

I would venture to guess that Dollaway and Simpson are equal to, if not greater than,
Miranda and Grove as far as skill set of the last two fights Munoz and Maia have had respectively.

beating Dollaway AND Simpson really means the guy should start fighting stiffer competition...
Why is that illogical matchmaking?vthat’s how it should go. Beat midlevel fighters and you should get a step up in competition…
if they give him pansy’s all around, people would be complaining that he’s “getting built up cause the UFC needs a Filipino star”…
