Quote of the Day: Chael Sonnen on Anderson Silva's UFC 126 Win

(Photo by Josh Hedges/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images)

Former MMA fighter and actor Paul Lazenby spoke with former UFC middleweight No. 1 contender Chael Sonnen to get his thoughts on Anderson Silva's first-round knockout win over Vitor Belfort at "UFC 126: Silva vs. Belfort" in Las Vegas. Silva retained his UFC middleweight championship with the win.

From PaulLazenby.com:

"Thank you, Anderson, for revealing yet another weakness for me to exploit in our rematch. Beating that poor punching bag doesn't impress Uncle Chael, guy. You tipped your hand like a chump poker player at a $5 table in Atlantic City. You may have beaten Vitor, but in the process, you LOST your edge. By beating that husk, you gave me the last page of your playbook. Revel in your time, [because] it ENDS the night you face me. I will mow you down like autumn wheat, AGAIN."

It's good to see Sonnen hasn't lost his sense of humor despite all the tough things that have happened to him in recent months. It's interesting he chose to comment at this time because he's been silent for so long now. Could this be a sign Sonnen is going to let it all loose once again? Time will tell.

IF that took place in the street, Chael would be in Jail…

What if Chael was fighting in Japan on the same dosage he was on???

No commission…No penalties…

His MMA record would still stand if his fight occured in Japan…and he was way jacked up on PEDs…

Chaels crime outside of the Octagon is not a violent/viscious crime…
Not nearly as bad as Michael Vicks crime…
People like Chael for his perfomance inside of the Octagon…not for the way he lives his life…
Who gives a damn about Mike Vicks life…NO ONE!
Vick is judged on what he does on the gridiron…thats all!
As long as Chael is a top fighter, he will always have a place to work within the octagon…

LOL no they wouldn’t. The idea is to either not get caught or blame someone else.

The only criminals who think there’s a decent chance of getting caught are the ones who already have. For the rest, penalties barely make a difference in their actions.

by Mint on Feb 7, 2011 11:25 AM EST up reply actions

think rationally for a minute. i understand that my mindset is not that of a criminal but I know for a fact that plenty a crime is committed with the understanding that you will get respect by doing your time in prison, or just the fact that when you commit a crime you will only have to spend X amount of time in prison and then be released. If the penalty of death for heavier crimes existed then I believe there would be a good percentage of people who would highly reconsider taking that step. Obviously there are going to be exclusions to this rule like crimes of passion or people who don’t have the will to live, or are literally too stupid to weigh their options before making bad decisions… the point is that there would be people who would think differently. And, i know there is a large set of people who wouldn’t complain a rapist or criminal of equal shittiness is dead and gone.

For those against the death penalty, I quote my favorite humorist PJ O'Rourke
“No one is fond of taking responsibility for his actions, but consider how much you’d have to hate free will to come up with a political platform that advocated killing unborn babies but not convicted murderers. A callous pragmatist might favour abortion and capital punishment. A devout Christian would sanction neither. But it takes years of therapy to arrive at the liberal point of view.”

while you might get flack for this

I 100% agree. Silva has gone up and beat legit guys at 205, granted Irvin is now a shell of himself. GSP needs to move up slow, gain weight the right way, which I’m sure he will, and then beat a credible MW contender.
Beside, it is the perfect face/heel match-up.

How has Okami earned a title shot? By beating Marquardt? That is his biggest win to date, and he lost to Sonnen and Rich Franklin. 7 of his last 9 fights have been decisions too. Thanks but no thanks.

Werdum beat Fedor, Dos Santos beat Werdum, Joaquim Ferreira beat Dos Santos. Therefore Ferreira is WAAAAY better than Fedor. Keep MMA math alive!

Okami should have

either beaten Sonnen or Franklin when he had his chance for a title shot before. Yes, he is 10-2 or some such in the UFC, but he picks the worst fights to lose…

He will have to be content getting the winner of Anderson-GSP…if he gripes too much he might get “rewarded” with a fight against Maia or Paul Harris…

most his fans I think just likes him because most of them don’t like AS, as soon as he starts bashing someone they respect and like such as GSP, I think they’d start having a problem with him. Most people (even the ones that likes him) had a problem when he talked about Armstrong, it really depends on who he bashes, Silva is an easy target because of the haters that were created during the Maia/Leites fights.

Chael Sonnen knows damn well

that he would mop the cage with Wandy…
I like Wnady and all, but Chael is not going to get KOed and He will take Wandy right down…
He did not want to offend someone in their respective environment…It was not the place for confrontation and Wandy wasnt in the mood.
He only blew up because the Camera was rolling. Wandy is a bad ass but Chael would beat his ass badly.

Agree w/ you and Orcus

Im starting to think that at first it was either you like him because you hate Silva, now it’s more like you just love him or hate him. Personally I think he’s a racist, slightly ignorant yet semi-intelligent D-bag who is funny. More important than all of that, at least to me, is he can wrestle and compete w/ the best fighters in his weight class.

The fact that he makes me laugh and/or cringe is largely irrelevant.

I like him because of all the trash he threw at Andy. It really got me into the fight. I was absolutely sure he would get a well deserved beating in no time. Then, against all odds, he does what he said he would do and I spend 4 and a half rounds thinking I’m somehow caught in a parallel dimension in which Chael Sonnen can beat Anderson Silva.

Then it happened. Andy triangle-choked the wit out of him. Saying I was pumped would be an understatement.

It wouldn’t have happened without Sonnen being Sonnen.

He came in with a soft tissue injury to the ribs – uncomfortable, but not debilitating or performance-affecting to a professional fighter by any stretch of the imagination?

He did crack a rib or ribs, apparently in the first, but that is a different issue. A rematch will go substantially the same as the first fight, with Anderson planted early and often on his back before ultimately submitting the submission prone Sonnen yet again.

I think Sonnen matches up with GSP really really well. That would be a great match of grapplers. I think it would be more competitive than GSP Silva would be. Silva is just too fast and dangerous. GSP has little to no chance of finishing Silva but Silva could easily finish GSP in a single strike. I dont see GSP coming out too well. A primer against Sonnen would be great.

Werdum beat Fedor, Dos Santos beat Werdum, Joaquim Ferreira beat Dos Santos. Therefore Ferreira is WAAAAY better than Fedor. Keep MMA math alive!

Correction: GSP has little to no chance of finishing any opponent, even if he breaks their face. (Just a joke.) Silva is not a one-punch finisher. He’s more like a one-knee, one-kick, one-elbow, + several punches finisher.

Sonnen would give GSP many problems.

He's trying to talk his way back into the MW Title picture...

Unfortunately for Chael:

1.) He lost to Silva
2.) He pissed hot afterwards, and must serve out a suspension
3.) Okami is next in line for a title shot
4.) Even Okami is getting skipped to make room for a GSP vs. Silva superfight

In his best case scenario, Chael Sonnen is at least 18 months away from a title shot, and I expect he’ll need to book at least 1-2 more wins after his suspension before he gets another crack at Anderson.

I might be missing something but what is this “last page of your playbook?” Is it a front kick to the face that can KO a person? Anderson utilized that move before against Henderson and in other fights. The funny thing is that we all know Sonnen’s playbook here of aggressive takedown and staying busy on top with no effort to pass guard and just throwing so that he doesn’t get a ref standup, and seeing his losses, it looks like a simple triangle choke is the way to stop it.

I won't jump off the bandwagon just because you lost.

And as his last fight proved comments =/= ppv buys. We are just watching a cheating thief talk trash about a guy that beat him now, also for no reason. He’s at best third in line to fight Silva behind Okami and GSP. He frankly doesn’t matter.

3rd in line to fight the 1st or second best in the world is still pretty dam good

Also he made people pretty much forget about Andersons shameful performance in abu dahbi. Thats a credit all its own.

Chael is getting a bit repetitive

But this shtick is what got him to the dance in the first place. Dude got nailed for fraud and steroids, I am pretty sure the one thing he isn’t going to start doing now is telling the truth. Might as well stick with his persona and try to talk away all his indiscretions.

Chael isn’t as funny to me anymore because before he just made up shit about his opponents, so it was kind of funny to see the insane things he would say. But now after the roids and fraud it’s kind of getting a bit sad, like he actually is disconnected from reality. It was fun when I thought he was just shit-talking to hype up fights, but when you see his insanity extends to his personal life….

He’s kind of like the friend you have that drinks an awful lot, but it’s ok because he’s amusing when he’s drunk. Until one day you see him at 9am and realize he is still plastered and you begin to realize he might have a problem….

STOP right there. He lost to Maia, then dominated Miller, Okami and beat Marquardt’s a**. He earned his title shot.

I thought he was just shit-talking to hype up fights, but when you see his insanity extends to his personal life….

I think you take him too seriously. He talks sh*t, he cheated. End of story. We’re all human.

I tend to be biased towards strikers . . . exciting strikers.

I respectfully disagree

Chael without his trash talk might very well be where Okami is right now, stuck in no mans land because he fights a very low key style that wins decisions, but isn’t flashy nor exciting. If Chael didn’t open his mouth I wouldn’t be shocked if Dana kept putting off his title shot.

And yes, he talked shit, he cheated, fine, but there is no down time for this, it seems to go on all the time.

And I don’t take him too seriously, it’s not like I hate the guy, I just don’t find him as entertaining as I used to.

I did immediately after the fight

But that was before steroids, fraud, and him not shutting up.

I like Yushin, but he does not have Chaels wrestling.

I like Chael, but he does not have Yushin's jab.

See what I did there?

Okay, that’s a lie. I don’t like Chael.

Please Bury Chael

I am so sick of this guy. I don’t care that he is a criminal, many fighters come from questionable backgrounds, if they didn’t they would choose a desk job. For me, being a liar doesn’t change one’s fighting ability. What Tyson did is a much worse offense, raping someone is horrible and yet he is making cameos in movies and RothlesE$#@%er is still QB’ing super bowls.

What is crazy to me is that he is juicing, he gets away with it with only a 6 month suspension, and he may come back to the UFC someday?! Screw that. Send him straight to the WWE. He clearly has a stronger mouth than ability to win fights.

I really wish the Belfort fight went longer, Belfort to me was the best contender they could have brought to face Silva in the division. His crazy kick made Belfort look like less of a contender than he is. Jesus just wasn’t on his side that night.

He's calling Vitor a husk?

Sonnen vs. Belfort…book it!

Shit's not funny

like, at all. I’ve never found none of the shit that Sonnen says to be funny, not even a fucking chuckle. It’s like here at work I hear people lol’n in their offices and they then forward me a “hillarious” email. I open it, read it, and go *eh. To each their own I guess, Sonnen is just not for me.

Come on haters...

You guys going to honestly say that you wouldn’t be interested in a Sonnen/Silva rematch?

If Silva bears Okami and G.S.P. …whichever comes first, what else is left?

ROIDS! ROIDS! ROIDS! Listen…roids really don’t help you that much unless you have the skill. It’s not like he was on some amphetamine and though he was Superman. Sonnen had his game plan and it worked charmingly until he got caught.

He was the closest to ending Silva’s reign.
