UFC 127 Analysis: Will B.J. Penn Meet Diego Sanchez Again?
It seems like just yesterday that B.J. Penn smoked Diego Sanchez so bad at UFC 107 that people were wondering if the UFC could find a decent challenger for Penn's lightweight title. Frankie Edgar answered that question of course with back-to-back wins over the Hawaiian.
But now SBN's Luke Thomas points out that a rematch between Penn and Sanchez might be just around the corner:
I received an interesting email from a reader wondering about the future of the welterweight division. The essential question was this: if B.J. Penn defeats Jon Fitch tonight at UFC 127 and Diego Sanchez defeats Martin Kampmann at UFC on Versus 3 next week, will they rematch? And if they do, will it look different than anything in this video (a clip from their first meeting at lightweight)?
It's not an idle query. Outside of Carlos Condit, there really aren't any other immediate contenders for a vacant welterweight title right now.
Something to think about heading into tonight's B.J. Penn vs Jon Fitch bout at UFC 127.

I’m not sure Diego Sanchez would want that fight. I think BJ is much closer to fighting for the belt than Sanchez. Have Diego fight Matt Hughes.
Did you see the size of that chicken?
i agree
sanchez got beat like a slave. the things he tried to do were not working he almost got floated a couple seconds into the match. went on to get beat until a vagina opened up on his face. if b.j. comes in shape sanchez doesn’t have a chance.
The winner of Story/Alves is right there. Plus there’s that Shields guy.
Still a Beer Monster.

(Alves vs Story) vs (Fitch vs BJ)?
Winner takes the vacated WW championship belt?

Not if Diego beats Kampman. I think the winners of both fights should fight each other regardless.
BJ Wins/Diego Wins. Both are coming off victories over quality opponents and if BJ is staying at 170 and Diego wants a title shot this makes sense for both guys.
BJ wins/Kampman wins. Another quality match up for BJ. From grinder to banger/all around MMAer. If Kampman wins thats two top notch welterweights back to back putting him in a prime position for a title shot.
Fitch wins/Diego wins. A rematch of a close fight that many argued could have gone either way. A true measuring stick to the improvement and evolution of Diego.
Fitch wins/Kampmann wins. A true number one contender fight between two guys on impressive streaks. Obviously Fitch’s much more impressive,
And most of all timing is right pending no severe injuries or suspensions. February 26th/March 3rd. Winners fight in summer while GSP (Pending his victory) fights Anderson Silva.

Tour-Na-Ment
A WW tourney with the belt on the line in the finals is the only fair way to award a vacant title. Much more legitimate than an arbitrary matchup.

Chris Lytle would be a huge step down for Penn if he beats Fitch.
If Penn wins and GSP vacates then Penn-Condit for the vacant WW title.
If Sanchez and Alves win then I’d love to see the UFC 90 fight that never happened.
If Lytle wins I think Ellenberger is his next step.
And assuming all of the above happens then I guess Fitch/Kampmann and Koscheck/Shields.
If BJ beats Fitch then anyone is technically a step Down. Fitch is the #2 WW in the world.
Defeat is a state of mind. No one is ever defeated until defeat has been accepted as a reality. Bruce Lee.
Yeah I understand that and I guess my main issue is even though Lytle has been winning the wins are not that big.Kevin Burns, Brian Foster, Matt Brown, Matt Serra, and if he wins tonight Brian Ebersole.
Decent fighters but nothing outstanding and you have to believe if Penn wins and GSP vacates they’re going to put Penn in the title fight and I dont think those wins should put Lytle in a title shot.
I say when Lytle wins he gets Condit.
Diego and Martin winner gets Shields.
Alves and Story winner gets winner of Penn/ Fitch. Unless Alves and Fitch win, cause no one wants to see that shit again.

The Alves/Fitch fight? I wouldn’t mind seeing it again actually. Alves wasn’t himself for that fight. I’d love to see an in shape and injury free no ring rust Alves take on Fitch. That would be a dream. The second one doesn’t count in my mind. I know it ‘counts’ but it doesn’t in my mind.

buh-dum-bum-ch
Anyway, I don’t see Diego beating Kampmann. I think Kampmann will bounce back from his loss to Shields well.
Wait...When did GSP vacate the title????
It’s not an idle query. Outside of Carlos Condit, there really aren’t any other immediate contenders for a vacant welterweight title right now.
Lets wait until Shields officially loses.
Does anyone really want to see Fitch vs Alves 3? And shouldn’t Alves have to beat a bit more than Howard and Story?
Lytle will be in the equation if he wins tonight.
IMO the most sense is BJ vs Condit for the vacated title (if it is vacated).
My boss at work
just got into Tony Robbins and his whole “YUS” thing. he has the books all over his desk and he’s completely into it. Part of me just wants to show him this fight and the results of Diego doing the Tony Robbin’s program. But, the other part of me wants to keep my job.
