Report: Paul Daley Misses Weight for BAMMA Fight
AddictedMMA.com is reporting that welterweight contender Paul "Semtex" Daley missed weight for his BAMMA fight with Yuya Shirai:
Latest reports from the Bamma weigh-ins have confirmed that "Paul Semtex" Daley has failed to make weight.
After coming in at 2lbs over weight at the weigh-in, Semtex was given a further hour to drop the 2lbs. Unfortunatly for everybody it seems that it wasn't possible and Semtex only managed to drop another pound.
Paul Daley announced before the weigh-in on his facebook page that there had been an issue with the sauna that he was using.
More reports are confirming that Paul Daley is now refusing to appear at the press conference.
Assuming this report is true, it is a major problem for Strikeforce, which had been planning to put Daley in against its star welterweight champion Nick Diaz.
Strikeforce has had trouble finding appropriate challengers for Diaz, who himself admitted that his last opponent, Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, was basically the only guy they could find to fill the spot.
This is the third time that Daley's missed weight in the past 13 months, and that means Strikeforce would be absolutely crazy to book him for a title fight when there's a pretty good chance he'll miss weight.
Keep in mind that the weight limit for a welterweight title fight is 170, as the typical one-pound allowance isn't allowed when a belt is on the line.

Non-title fight now.
http://mmaweekly.com/bamma-5-weigh-in-results-and-pics-paul-daley-and-ricco-rodriguez-miss-weight
The fight itself will still go ahead, but with a revised format, namely a non-title fight contested over three rounds.
Another casualty of the Sauna debacle is import fighter Ricco Rodriguez who came in at 217lbs, which is 2lbs over the contracted catch-weight of 215lbs as previously agreed between himself and former UFC fighter James McSweeney.

For anyone to blame anything but themselves about missing weight shows immaturity and a complete lack of responsibility. He’ll probably win, but I really want Daley to lose.
It’s all nice but not really realistic. If you’re counting on a sauna and you don’t have one, it will mess up your weight cut.
Boys becoming men...Men becoming wolves
So it is the saunas fault then?
No.
He has an excuse but no reason.

Whether it was the sauna's fault or not
I hate that Daley misses weight so often, Hazelett, his first or 2nd fight after leaving the UFC, and now this.
It seems like it may be the sauna’s fault, but shouldn’t fighters be prepared for discrepencies in different scales?
If I were a fighter, I’d probably carry a spare digital scale or two with me, and I wouldn’t stop the cut unless I was on weight on all of the scales. One bad scale shouldn’t really be a reasonable excuse when it comes down to it.

5 times in 11 fights is almost 50%. Daley needs to move up a weight class. He is the Erin Toughill of male MMA.
Erin Toughill doesn’t miss weight. She just backed out of a guaranteed World Title shot rather than even try to make weight, and then later got called out hilariously on her weight and was given an opportunity for a #1 Contender’s fight, and then backed out of that too since she didn’t think she could make weight.
Daley is missing weight mostly on indy shows. In all of Daley’s cases it didn’t really matter that much as long as he won. Erin Toughill had the chance to be the new face of Women’s MMA and she could never even make weight in a training run.
so he missed weight for a stay busy fight in england by a pound or 2…who cares. strikeforces welterweight division is so thin its ridiculous. daley is 170lber his entire career basically and a great style matchup for diaz….who i think missed weight for a fight once by 7 pounds…(would need to check me on that). if daley wins he should get the title shot for no other reason than their options are limited, he could beat any welterweight in the world on a given night…and the fight is very marketable.
I say Daley should get the next shot...
But only by default. Besides Woodley, there’s no real WW title contenders in SF. In most situations, I would say a guy missing weight in his last fight should not be immediately granted a title shot.
How about making him fight Woodley
and getting a Diaz a MW to fight or something at whatever weight, or let him box in the mean time.
Daley deserves to have his MMA game exposed again anyways after yet again displaying his level of maturity and professionalism.
www.ninjasplace.com
Why on earth would they want to "expose" one of their biggest draws
by putting him in a crappy style matchup with a fighter nobody knows? And what is this nonsense about what Daley “deserves”? He’s a grown man. He missed weight for a fight, he pays the penalty and everybody moves on. There is literally zero chance that this weight incident factors at all into Coker’s decision-making for Daley’s next fight.

Well, especially since he made weight now that it's not a title fight anymore
and he was under the unified welterweight limit of 171 lbs, even with the sauna incident. So if Daley wins this fight, he will have won a standard welterweight bout and been on weight for it. No issues for a title shot based on his record and resume. It won’t affect the title shot in SF because there’s no reason for it to. And did anybody really think Daley vs. Shirai needed to be a title fight? At all?
Unless Coker is antsy about booking a fighter who missed weight in the past, this goes off without a hitch pending a Daley win. And Coker guy headlined a monster card with Carano vs. Cyborg. So… yeah. Hard to imagine this throwing off Strikeforces plans.

It could ruin the momentum SF is having if they book this fight and put a ton of money into promoting it and they end up with Daley not making weight and having a non title fight. Scott Coker has to really weigh that because it is a coin toss in his last 11 fights as to whether or not he makes weight. If that happens and they scrap or fumble this HW tourney because of Barnett and booking issues then these two things could be the straw that broke the camel’s back which I really don’t want to happen.
Carano vs. Cyborg was the mega-card to prove to CBS that Showtime could deliver ratings.
Cyborg and Carano both were notorious for missing weight at that point. Sometimes by a hilarious margin. It was a gamble and it paid off big for him. This is a much smaller risk. I don’t think it will be a big deal.

It is still a gamble, it is a coin toss in the last 3 or 4 years at to whether or not he makes weight
They could do it and it could go either way it just makes me nervous when a company I want to succeed takes a chance at a 50-50 situation, I would prefer better odds if I were to gamble.
The ladies weight issue is a much more legitimate thing IMO. Their menstrual cycle does all kinds of things to their body and can make huge differences in the weight cut depending on what time of the month it takes place at. I think most women should only try about 5 pounds max because of that.
Daley
Seems generally self-destructive and I can’t say I enjoy him as an individual. I like watching his fights, but always root against him. I was SO hoping for a Scott Smith hail-mary KO.

It doesn’t matter what happens Saturday, if he misses weight, loses, or sucker punch Prince William. He will get the title shot anyway because they don’t have anyone else.

Right. As he should
everybody just needs to unbunch their panties and enjoy the fireworks.

This is favorable news for Coker
Gives him a reason to not give Daley the shot and protect Nick Diaz.
I really think people underestimate how important it is for SF to keep Diaz on top. It fuels the argument that he could challenge GSP (which is, of course, false).
This is just loopy
SF wanted to put Daley in against Diaz in place of Cyborg. Daley was the one who wanted to slow his roll and take a couple more fights. Even if Coker is protecting Diaz — which he might be — he isn’t protecting him from charismatic one-dimensional strikers. Daley is the perfect matchup for Diaz, and Diaz will be a clear favorite. It will be a fantastic fight, and barring a freak loss tonight it will definitely happen.

Really? I actually think Daley will floor him
I understand that Diaz ruins Daley on the ground, but I think he’s too stubborn to go for a takedown-centric gameplan. He’ll try to stand up with Daley and get KO’d
It's a tough fight to call for sure
but it is much, much better for SF if Daley takes the title, than Woodley, who is dull as dishwater in the cage and out. Even if he beats Diaz, it sets up rematches and trilogies that could be really interesting.

3 strikes your out!!! IMO
If you miss weight 3 times you should never be allowed to waste peoples time and money again! You miss that many times in that short of a time period and any organization that is willing to trust you to make weight has some serious retards in charge.
Daley should move up
When you find it this hard to make weight you know your cutting too much. Hes not even fighting at 100% when cutting this kind of weight.
Does anyone even know what he cuts from?
I haven’t seen any reports. Very curious to know what he weighs a couple of weeks out, just to have a better idea if he is doing it wrong or just too big.

He'd be a pipsqueak MW.
He’d be much better off getting on the Dolce diet like Thiago and losing some permanent weight.

They got outed from the Sauna too early.
Or so I’ve heard. If it’s true I can’t really knock it on them too much for missing weight.
Everybody needs to calm down
Daley has shown that he can make weight when there is something on the line. It’s probably not a coincidence that his last two incidents were in BAMMA and Shark Fights, respectively. We also shouldn’t be surprised if he is a little underwhelming tonight, like he was against Masvidal.
As a huge Daley fan, I fully acknowledge that he appears to have maturity/motivation issues, and that he has significant limitations in his game. But people here need to put down the pipe if they think this weigh-in is going to have any long term impact on his career. The SF WW division is thin as hell, and Daley is the best option for Diaz by a country mile. Coker will DEFINITELY give him the title shot if he wins and will probably give it to him even if he loses.
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
SF WW division is thin but it is bad business to count on someone when promoting something when you clearly can't count on them to hold up their end of the bargain.
He has missed weight in 5 of his last 11 fights and they have taken place in MFC, UFC, Shark Fights and BAMMA. Clearly it isn’t just a problem that takes place in small shows and even if it were that should not matter, he is clearly showing that he doesn’t care no matter what organization it is and I don’t know why a promoter would spend money promoting a guy that it is a coin toss as to whether it is taking place under the agreed upon deal. These misses are not a matter of sauna’s or any other excuse he has come up with, plenty of other people on these cards are not having any problems at all.
He is simply pointing out what obviously will happen, not
necessarily what any of us believe should happen.

Exactly
Daley is fighting Diaz next if he wins, so people need to get used to it.
Of course that is also what I think SHOULD happen, but I am a huge Semtex mark.

That's fine if you're Dana White, and you have the pick of every WW in the world
but if you’re Scott Coker, and you have to make do with second-tier fighters, you can’t afford not to promote a guy like Daley, who is an absolute wet dream for promoters.
Daley has never missed weight at SF, and Coker is just not going to care if he misses weight at BAMMA.
You’re acting like SF titles matter, which we all know they don’t. Even if absolute worse comes to absolute worse and Daley misses weight in a title fight with Diaz (which he won’t), so what? Coker still gets the fight, which will be awesome (and isn’t going 5 rounds under any circumstances) if Daley wins then they can have a rematch when he loses weight, and if he loses, he can go beat the crap out of Cyborg or some such.
Daley is gold for Coker and he knows it. He’s one of the few guys who could beat Diaz and not hurt the popularity and name recognition of the WW champ.
Daley is not just some dude, and it’s ridiculous to suggest that Coker has a million interchangeable replacements waiting in the wings. Daley is a top 10 fighter and probably the best pure striker in the WW division. He’s not going to suffer for this, even if all the puritans here want him to.

It's not just Daley or a SF issue for me.
I hate when people miss weight and find it inexcusable. IMO if someone misses weight by 5 pounds they should never be able to fight at that weight again, I would also say that if someone misses weight 3 times by less than 5 pounds he should never be able to fight at that weight again.
I am not holding this only on Daley, I think the same should apply to Rumble Johnson, Thiago Alves and any other notoriously heavy fighters who constantly miss weight. When Rumble fought Yoshida I thought it was crazy that it could still be sanctioned. He missed weight by 8 pounds and in the fight he looked like he was 30 pounds heavier and then goes on to viciously smash Yoshida, if I were Dana or the AC I would never let him fight at WW again. It really reminded me of the pride days when there weren’t weight classes or they allowed mis matches in size or going way back to the UFC David vs Goliath.
I can completely sympathize with that position
and I do see where you’re coming from. FWIW, Daley is hardly a physical monster at 170. I honestly think his weight issues are more a function of laziness than of being to big to fight at the WW limit. If he pummels whatshisface tonight, it won’t be because he’s huge, but because he hits like a truck.
I can see being tougher on guys that miss weight, but I’m also a big fan of two guys — Alves and Daley — who have struggled, so it’s hard for me to be all that militant about it.

I agree that he isn't as physically imposing as Rumble but it doesn't make it ok.
I kind of find it worse because I would guess it probably is mostly due to laziness/discipline issues which makes me feel more cheated than someone who is trying to make a crazy cut to hold an advantage over his opponent.
I was a fan of Daley but weight cutting and then the cheap shot kind of made me lose too much respect for him to consider myself a fan any longer. I also am a big fan of pitbull (probably my 2nd WW behind GSP) but I can’t get past that at times and would still be a big fan of his at MW. I like that he is with Dolce and if it never happens again I would love to see him stay at WW but if it ever happens again I will start harping he should move up again, I’ll give him one last chance.
When fighters sign a bought agreement I’m sure it covers all kinds of things, opponent, date, weight class, etc. I find missing weight to be just as big of a contractual break as not showing up because you thought it was a different date or agreeing to do so much media and then not showing for those commitments.
