He is, but ....

… I don’t think Lesnar would like having to do hours of hard sparring each week with élite kickboxers who make him look and feel completely foolish.

I also don’t seem him enjoying spending time thousands of miles from home in a country VASTLY more liberal than the US.

I think everyone knows that the rankings bandied around for Brock are a farce and that it will be a huge uphill struggle for him to ever be considered a legitimate top 5 contender, regardless of what he does and where he trains. His cardio and striking are SO BAD.

by papardelle fettucine on Feb 2, 2011 7:15 PM EST up reply actions

I agree with everything you said but

I don’t ever remember Brock gassing. Even after the beating Carwin gave him in the first round you couldn’t tell that at the start of round 2. He hasn’t been in any 5 round wars but I wouldn’t bet against him in that regard.

by Conesie on Feb 2, 2011 7:57 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I’m actually not sure. Watch the fight again. At one point he throws this backhanded punch, and it DID look like he was tired. Could’ve also been his scared reaction, but I’m not too sure.

by ThomasJ92 on Feb 3, 2011 11:30 AM EST up reply actions

He got hit in the head a bunch but yeah I don't remember him gassing

I have heard Bas compliment his gas tank several times on Inside MMA

That there is crazy talk. He got beat up 3 minutes in, but saying that was him gassing a little crazy. He is definately one of top 3 in the UFC hw division in terms of conditioning.

Brock didn't gas

Sure, he relented from the frenetic pace he set in the opening 30 seconds, but nobody can maintain that. Near the end of the fight, you could see Brock do a rather athletic 180 on his back, so he didn’t look gassed to me.

If anything, Brock looked more lost than gassed. His bullrush didn’t work, his takedowns didn’t work, so it was like he had a “WTF do I do now?” look on his face.

by Mint on Feb 4, 2011 10:49 AM EST up reply actions

Just out of curiosity, WTF would Holland being liberal have to do with anything? He wouldn’t be going there to get into politics.

by Rocejize on Feb 3, 2011 1:25 PM EST up reply actions

I mostly agree, but anyone think he's a little optimistic about Brock?

Does he really think that Brock can ameliorate his weakness in three minutes after he’s been unable to improve in three years?

Didn’t the Carwin fight sound off some alarms? Surely he didn’t just think, “nobody else can hit me, so no need to train striking defense”. I would honestly rank Brock’s striking defense and defense off his back to be worse than at least 100 UFC fighters. I think it’s more likely that he’s hit a roadblock, because no athlete can possibly be so ignorant of the fundamentals in their sport of choice after three years. Maybe Brock is poor at learning new reflexes, and throughout his life he simply used his aggressiveness and size in a way that made it unimportant for him to react correctly to his opponents’ actions.

by Mint on Feb 4, 2011 11:38 AM EST up reply actions

says he knows no one is allowed to hit Brock Lesnar in practice

Didn’t quite get that out of what he said. It was more like he just didn’t see how Brock ever got hit in practice having seen the fights.

He’s right that coaching TUF is the wrong move for Brock.

by Rufford on Feb 2, 2011 6:26 PM EST reply actions

Wrong move for Brock

Right move for the UFC.

Either Brock will disprove the critics, coach fantastically this season, beat Junior Dos Santos and then regain his belt from Cain.

OR

Brock will get punched around for two rounds before he’s had enough, quit mixed martial arts, do a one time gig for the WWE and spend the rest of his life getting on top of his wife and hunting deer.

UFC wins either way.

by troy_doney on Feb 2, 2011 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe Brock wants one big payday before retiring, doing TUF would probably be the best way to hype the next fight. He gets a cut of the ppv, right?

Kind of a haters take on it but what do I know? I’m a fan.

Still, Dana might have put too much money on the table to walk away from. Anyone else think this has the potential of being the biggest TUF season yet?

by Rufford on Feb 2, 2011 8:10 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not a hater, just responding to the commenter saying it’s a wrong move for Brock. Maybe he will quit and doing TUF would be the best way to get the most out of his last fight, personally, I hope he sticks with it. Whatever he is, he garners a lot of attention and I like that.

There is a 3rd option

He beats Dos Santos by being bigger and controlling the fight, goes on to lose to Cain and then retires because he can’t beat Velazquez.

The throat punch was great though!

says he knows no one is allowed to hit Brock Lesnar in practice.

I’d be astonished if that were true. 1) They have to know that’s his weakness at the moment. Why not work on it? 2) Why bother bringing in Barry to train with then?

That doesn’t make any sense.

http://mixedmartialartsblogger.wordpress.com/

by Cory Braiterman on Feb 2, 2011 6:27 PM EST reply actions

I think it's partially true

Pat Barry was there as a kick boxer and not like a boxer. I think he brought him for kicking :) Seriously though. Brock needs to train with Overeem or something if he is serious about being in this business. He could be extremely well trained for JDS and still get KOd. But he should at least not run away. The fact that he has not watched his fight or so he says is disturbing. I mean you need to know what you did wrong and correct it. If Brock wins against JDS, he’ll look like a world beater again. If he loses, I guess WWF is next for him. Can’t see him hanging around not having a shot at the title

To be fair to Bas

He’s mostly talking about how the tapping fighters feel he’s looked upon rather than the way he looks at them. I think he’s right from that POV.

It was rather clear that GSP didn’t feel too much shame and used the incident to motivate him, so I don’t think it was much of a problem. It probably helped that he tapped right when the fight was being stopped, i.e. the point where the ref thinks he’s got no chance and is in danger. That would help GSP convince himself that he didn’t quit and leave behind a small chance of winning.

I dunno if he isn’t allowed to be hit but im almost certain his camp is filled with Yes men. I mean its his gym on his property and tailor made to him. Nobody is going to say No Brock and that can hurt him big time in the long haul. Bas has always been iffy with Brock but the guy needs to get somewhere where is just another fighter and not the THE fighter. Id like to see him train with Randy and Xtreme Couture since he is already out in Vegas. Let them beat on him for a few months.

I'm pretty sure fighters think he is talking down to them with the way he puts things and a lot of fighters are too proud for that

plus he also makes you do whatever he says with no ifs ands or buts and a lot fighters hate that.

really?

Maybe fighters that are on top in their weight class don’t like being told what to do. But I have to imagine that 90% of training camps are that “my way or the highway” approach

You don't have to be a top tier fighter or even a goiod fighter to have an ego

That is the reason Kimbo stopped training with Bas in the first place as well….

my dissapointment in Brock

Comes from his mentality after the fight /w Cain, he should have changed gyms, his whole philosophy of ‘they made me champion’ is bunk.

He would make a great addition to a camp that caters to proper game planning and avoiding total damage, he is quick enough to avoid damage but he obviously needs to learn how to take the damage, and not appear hurt as hell.

Fedor when he used to get DESTROYED would appear undamaged, unphased, it totally disencourages the other fighter.

The people he hires aren’t yes men but I do somewhat believe they propably have a ’don’t hurt brock / strike brock" policy in the gym

Fedor grew up in Russia... Brock is a rich American

By that I mean Fedor has a real since of pride and country and Americans grab cash and run

I’m American BTW so I can say that because it’s true.

If that is the kind of American you are, do us all a favor and stop.

Godspeed and party on!
