Which leads to

less fighters getting fights. Which leads to less fighters getting paid.

No one is talking about all fights being 5 rounds. Main events.

by Jonathan Snowden on Feb 17, 2011 6:03 PM EST up reply actions

That seems arbitrary

although it would totally negate my point, so I’ll ignore the facts.

How do you determine which are 5 rounds though?

Certainly, a fight between two guys the calibur of Rampage and Evans deserves to be five rounds, but what about Couture vs Vera? Or Marquardt vs Okami? Penn vs Hughes deserved to be five rounds, but it wasn’t a main event either.

The problem is that there’s no easy way to make a fight five rounds based on the participants because you can base it on something arbitrary like the main/co-main status, but not all of those fights are appropriate to have five rounds. You could go by rankings, but the UFC (and few other organizations) don’t recognize any (let alone a single set of ranks), not to mention that it too is arbitrary. The only way you can deem a fight worthy of five rounds every time around is if a piece of gold is on the line.

by -Neil- on Feb 17, 2011 6:51 PM EST up reply actions

Why do you need a hard and fast rule? Fights that feel like they should be five rounds can be five rounds.

by Jonathan Snowden on Feb 17, 2011 7:05 PM EST up reply actions

I agree

But without precident, or standards to go by, it could go from something that’s a good idea to “THIS guy is getting five rounds?” real fast. Arbitrarily picking one fight over another will disenchant people as to why the fights are five rounds, especially if there is perceived favoritism from the brass (not that we’ve ever seen that).

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a firm believer that fights between elite fighters ought to be five rounds, but there has to be an order and system to chose which become a five round spectacle, and what remains the generic three.

by -Neil- on Feb 17, 2011 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

I think more 5 round fights would mean a lot more slow paced action in the first 2 to 3 rounds.

But how often do you see that in 5 round title fights?

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains

by Brian Mayes on Feb 17, 2011 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

Depends on the fighters and I’m not saying it would happen all the time. To me it just seems like a lot of fighters tend to feel each other out or slow the pace because they know they might have to go 5 rounds and they don’t want to gas.
Or it might just be the fact that 5 round fights are title fights and people are more precautions.

If you can't wow them with brilliance, then baffle them with bullshit.

But was Maynard vs. Edgar 2 like that? Rampage vs. Forrest or Hendo? Sonnen vs. Silva? Misaski vs. Santiago?

I think it’s more the latter. #1 contender’s fights are three rounds now and suffer from the same thing.

You’re probably right.
When I try to put myself in the mind of a fighter I think I’d be worried about usuing up too much energy in the begging. Especially if I’d never been in a 5 round fight. But I’m not a fighter so my opinion really doesn’t matter

You dont think the UFC has interest in the smaller guys?

Your nuts if you think the UFC wouldnt sign Hioki, Sandro, BIbiano, Blanco.

Thats all they would want, the LW Aoki and Crusher are going to SF, the only LW in Japan the UFC would have interest is Blanco.

the UFC would def push for the FW. Hioki, Sandro, Bibiano, Takaya, Miyata and even guys like Hellboy and Kanehara.

But Hioki, Bibiano, Miyata, Sandro and Takaya the UFC would def have interest in, and Blanco at LW.

So its not like their is a ton of LW to sign and the UFC doenst have room, Crusher is in SF and Aoki will follow, Blanco is the only LW the UFC would go after and he would be worth it.

Hioki, Blanco, Sandro and Bibiano are who I pray the UFC can sign.

I’m surprised Ronnie Mann signed with Bellator and not the UFC. Really thought the UFC should have went after him.

Dude’s jacked to the gills, but that’s not going to help him much. He’d have a better chance at going places at 125 or 115, which are much weaker divisions than 135 or 145.

Yeah I’ve been saying this for a long time. Bellator fucked up not making a Flyweight tournament.

With the WEC gone, UFC not doing 125 now, SF not doing it they messed up.

They would have had nobody to compete with for top talent in the div.

They could have scooped up every top Flyweight and made the best tournament they’ve ever done. And the winner would have been the best in the world. The only div Bellator could say this about.

Formiga
Montague
Vila
Dodson
Gaudinot
Mamoru

then get Urushitani and a few guys from Japan and it would have been such a great tournament with all the top guys.

IT could have been their unique staple div. The only place to see the top 125lbers in the world fight.

What are Tachi’s contracts? Exclusive? Could Bellator still go and take Dodson, Formiga, MOntague, Vila from them or are they exclusive to Tachi Palace?

I hope Tachi gets ROC champ Gaudinot in the mix as well.
