Tim Kennedy speaks to Sherdog Radio about his loss to "Jacare" Souza and his plans to KO Melvin Manhoef on March 5th at Strikeforce: Henderson vs. Feijao:

"That [Jacare] fight was totally crap," Kennedy said. "I sat there for 25 minutes and stalked the guy around the cage as he would peck me with the jab or throw an overhand right. Repeat for 25 minutes. That sucks. I, as a fan, would get bored with that fight. For crying out loud, come forward and fight me. You’re the greatest grappler on the planet. So I stuff you on a couple of takedowns, maybe try for a third one. If I take you down, maybe try to submit me. Don’t sit there and ride out a decision doing some fancy footwork for some so-called judges that are boxing judges. That’s stupid. If you’re going to win a title, come into the cage to fight."

"I’m not that kind of fighter," he explained. "I want to fight. I know everybody cares about who gets the W, but the fans want to see exciting fights. … Of course I like winning, but I like fighting. Fighting’s the essence of the sport, and that’s what people pay to see. If I’m going to take him [Manhoef] down, I’m going to pick him up and I’m going to slam him. I’m not going to stay tight for a close submission. I want to knock him out. That’s what fans like seeing and that’s what I like delivering."

I’m a Kennedy fan, but I never like it when fighters complain like this after they lose a fight. Sure it wasn’t the most exciting fight, but Mr. Kennedy….Kennedy: He won. If you don’t like the way he fights, knock him out or submit him. It comes down to you, not your opponent.

Still a Beer Monster.

Totally agree

If Tim wanted a brawl he needs to create a brawl. If was trying to create a brawl, it wasn’t apparent during the fight. If that WAS what he was trying to do, then even more props to Jacare for not allowing his opponent and effectively beating Kennedy at Kennedy’s own game.

I had this a close, but clear, and entertaining, 48-47 for Souza. I’d be OK with a rematch later this year.

I’m a huge Kennedy fan but that’s some weak sauce. Maybe he’s just trying to antagonize Jacare so he can get a quick shot at the title again, but still.

damn, hes still butthurt that he clearly lost a 48-47 decision.

These comments have been echoed many times by many other fighters

It’s the classic problem for fighters who just want to throw the fuck down in the spirit of the “who is the toughest” mindset. Like who’s the biggest and baddest in the village proper (answer on page 45). Those days are behind us, those halycon days of Vale Tudo and Ultimate Fighting and No Holds Barred. The game was to put the other guy away. To fight.

Mixed Martial Arts is a sport and while it does speak to that desire to see who’s the toughest and gutsiest, it’s not actually abotu that. Much like the Queensbury rules of boxing, it’s a ruleset constructed around winning according to a specific set of criteria. The game is to demonstrate better skills, and a stoppage is merely an early conclusion to a contest.

Or something? How you guys doing?

i like Kennedy's mind set.

Just not him. He comes across as a douche. If you are getting out boxed by a the greatest grappler in your division( #2 on the planet) maybe you should take him down? I am sure that would work out really good for you.
If you can’t then he is better than you every where.

He didn't want to Stand and Bang with everyone else

why Jacare?

Another question is why don’t you just kick his ass? Why not just charge forward swinging wildly? That’s what you wanted him to do.

To add a bit more

He was complaining that Jacare didn’t try to take him down more. WTF????

a loss is a loss

get over it Tim, you’re better than this. Go knock out Manhoef & campaign for the title again. Please don’t Sonnen your reputation.

I don’t like this guy. Yeah Jacare didn’t have to most exciting fight, but I thought Kennedy was fighting conservatively too. He should have gone after him harder. It’s just sour grapes that he lost the decision. Lame.

by Horselover Fat on Feb 16, 2011 12:22 PM EST reply actions

it takes 2 to tango...

Tim – These are ridiculous excuses for your poor performance.
Could be that Jacare didn’t do much in the fight – but he was winning it (comfortably).
What’s your excuse for being jabbed in the face for 5 rounds?

by JiuJitsu Ergo Sum on Feb 16, 2011 12:23 PM EST reply actions

exactly right – Jacare was totaly beating his ass that whole fight no matter where it went .on the feet & on the ground, Kennedy was just outclassed bottom line.

If he wanted to win, then he should have went out and taken that W.

I seem to remember kennedy also holding back

by TheBiggertheyare... on Feb 16, 2011 12:37 PM EST reply actions

He doesn't remember it it all

So maybe Jacare hits harder than we thought.

Kennedy also used excuses after getting beat after the 2ndJason Miller fight He said cooments such as he did not have time to train, Was more focused on his upcoming service then training for the fight, etc The turned me off to rooting for him back then. I remember when the decision was read I yself scored the fight for 49-46 Jacare and if I remember right I just barley gave Kennedy the 4th round I think it was ?

The thing I remember about that fight is how shocked and then how pissed Kennedy got from such a one sidded decision after the decision was read . It was quite dam obvious to all who watched the fight who won that fight exsept Kennedy himself. I could not get over his facial and body expressions after the decision was read and he lost. I will always remember how Shcoked & mad he got as he pulled away from the ref with a look of total disgust on his face from the decision that was read. From the interviews after Kennedy actually thought he was on the wrong side of a bad decision ? Kennedy actually thought he was on the wrong side of a bad/horrible decision in that fight.

He’s still whining about this. Incredible.

Back when Dane Cook was funny, he had this bit

about being at a red light and getting rear ended. And the person whose fault it is getting out of the car and whining:

“Why were you stopped at a legal red light and let me hit you doing 80!!?!?”

Yeah.

by Cocytus on Feb 16, 2011 1:32 PM EST reply actions

This is just like Jeremy Stephens bitching about how Melvin didn’t come forward and stand toe to toe with him. You always get this kind of thing when someone faces someone more technical than them. I agree fighter’s should look to engage and make it a fight but not just throw the gameplan out the window. These guys spend weeks and months formulating specific gameplans for their opponents and 99% of the time that doesn’t include “stand and bang.”

by dreamers_12345 on Feb 16, 2011 4:20 PM EST reply actions

There's a fine line

Between wanting to put on an exciting fight and bitching because you got outgamed. I think this crosses over into the latter. It’s one thing if a guy uses his world class wrestling to hold you down and you just aren’t able to keep the fight consistently anywhere, but it’s another entirely to bitch because someone jabbed you to death. Do you know what’s longer than a jab? A kick. Do you know what else you can do? Slip the jab. You can make it an exciting fight on your feet. You can’t lay that all on the other guy the way you can if you got LnP’d. Put in a tampon and do your part. If a guy knows he can jab and run on you the whole fight and you’re not going to cut off the cage or do anything about it, it’s your damn fault.

Hell, even if you do get LnP’d, you bear some of the responsibility.

by Confucius on Feb 16, 2011 4:38 PM EST reply actions

What’s funny is he just didn’t Jab him to earn the W, Jacare was the better fighter all around that night. It was a clear cut victory that no one but Kennedy questioned.

by Shocbomb on Feb 16, 2011 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

Or rather, it reminds me of a documentary about Army SF selection after 9/11

And one reaction to the show being “all I see is RAAARGH are you tough are you a fucking fighter, where’s the thinking that was supposed to mean Special Forces?”
