Strikeforce: Fedor Emelianenko's Eye After Losing to Antonio "Big Foot" Silva

Photo

Tracy Lee caught a photo of Fedor Emelianenko's eye shortly after the doctor stopped his Strikeforce bout against Antonio Silva. After the loss Emelianenko contemplated retirement:

"Yes, maybe it's the last time. Thanks god for everything. I spent a great, beautiful, long, sport life. Maybe it's God's will."

Damn! The man is a true warrior, but right now he looks like something from a Tool video.

Damn that’s hard to look at. Both for the how bad the eye is and also the thought that he might retire. He had a long, storied career.

Damn.

The heavyweights these days are just too good now that you can’t be giving up 50 or 60 pounds to them no matter who you are. Those days are over, I think.

by OperationX on Feb 13, 2011 4:09 AM EST reply actions

I can’t really attribute this loss ALL to size though, if had more of a game on his back he should have been able to at least shrink to half guard when he was mounted.

by Pandanus on Feb 13, 2011 4:19 AM EST up reply actions

Have you ever actually been in somebody’s mount? It is hard to even get to half guard with a guy the same weight.

Now add a BJJ black belt and an extra 30-40 lbs on top of that and you get one stupid, uneducated comment.

by amoladora on Feb 13, 2011 6:58 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

I do BJJ and one thing that is evident with alot of Sambo practitioners is that they have a very good top game but their bottom game is always lacking in comparison; Fedor was really the exception but even here he just didn’t look good on his back, hell even Hunt had that half hearted kimura on him back in the day, Fedor would always rely on alot of explosive buck movements and scrambles, but with a much more technical BJJ on top he looked like a fish out of water for the most part.

by Pandanus on Feb 13, 2011 7:03 AM EST up reply actions

I’m just saying this isn’t just a size factor, Silva played a smart game, smothered and controlled him while inflicting alot of damage part and parcel of his technical acumen.

by Pandanus on Feb 13, 2011 7:05 AM EST up reply actions

that eye looks terrible, but what's the big deal?

he got mounted and pounded on by a 280 pound guy, and well, in this sport, eventually, everyone loses,

i’m sad he lost, but in my eyes, he’ll always be one of the greatest in the division

i certainly hope that he takes another fight because i feel he still has the tools to be able to compete against the other heavyweights in sf

by theblade on Feb 13, 2011 4:47 AM EST reply actions

Hmm.

The Fedor Mystique has lost it’s luster. The guy is past his fighting prime. I know some will fire back assuming I’m using his submission loss as leverage in my opinion. I’m not. Fedor was just thoroughly dismantled by someone who is considered ‘low tier’.

Bigfoot’s size, jaw and power erased anything Fedor gave in response to what was inflicted. It was more like Fedor was trying to wash away his last loss by going for broke early in hopes of catching Bigfoot for the TKO.

Third time’s a charm? Maybe, but if Fedor wants to give a go — a decision I am against — then his best bet is against: Arlovski, again or Del Rosario. Maybe if Barnett loses, they can finally meet in a co-main event.

I may have to watch it again...

But I don’t remember Fedor testing Silvas jaw with anything close to a significant shot.

Fedor would have been finished much earlier had there been elbows.

The lack of elbows actually prolonged that fight.

If Russia attacked Turkey from the rear, Do you think Greece would help?

by whardiek on Feb 13, 2011 8:48 AM EST reply actions

Great point. That fight would’ve ended in the middle of the 2nd round with Silva elbowing Fedor.

by Shnak on Feb 13, 2011 10:17 AM EST up reply actions

I was screaming at the tv saying elbow, elbow.

Then I realized it was the URMMA – elbows on the ground. This is yet another reason I am not a huge fan of Strikeforce. I truly believe Silva would have had a stoppage in the middle of the 2nd round had he been able to use elbows.

So…the myth of Fedor…can we take a knife and carve that sumbitch up? I know he had a good run but it’s over now…yeah, I didn’t think so.

by Hardcase on Feb 13, 2011 8:52 AM EST reply actions

I just don’t understand the whole stamping Fedor as a ‘myth’. He IS a real person who did fight and enjoyed an ice-cream and sweater every now and then.

by Pandanus on Feb 13, 2011 9:02 AM EST up reply actions

The myth of Fedor, at least as I like to call it, is not that he had an incredible record, but that he is UNBEATABLE. And I come from the Any Given Sunday school. So to see some of the most fervent Fedor nuthuggers (not saying you’re one, ‘cause I don’t know either way) now pulling out their hair because the man’s now lost twice – definitively, and, well…I’m not losing any sleep over it. :)

by Hardcase on Feb 13, 2011 9:22 AM EST up reply actions

Regardless he is still the most decorated HW in the the sport and before the Werdum loss it kinda was hard to picture how he would lose to be honest.
Am I bummed out sure? But I’m more annoyed at the irrational retards (not saying you’re one) like Dana White just going gangbusters on kicking a great fighter while he’s down which is very tasteless in my opinion. Honestly the crap I’ve seen written today from some people on the UG for example has swayed me to not really post anymore and partially made me feel embarrassed of being an MMA fan. Sure you get nuthuggers, but just separate them from the athlete.
And of course I’m not going to lose sleep over it as I still have the Reem to take care of business ;)

Now that’s what we call in the old country, having something in common! :’)

I’ll also add though I find it strange how you have a President of company furiously on twitter calling fans “Ball lickers”, tell them to get “Fedors cock out their mouth” etc. etc. and it garners no traction elsewhere yet we had that whole F-gate fiasco with Rogan stemming from one use of a slur. Just sayin’ :)

But anyway big props to Silva he fought a smart fight, props to Fedor for a fun career and a gutsy and potentially final showing and props to horsemeat as you’ll be fueling the 2011 SF Grand Prix winner to victory.

My only question is this:

why was this fight stopped, yet Koscheck was allowed to fight with that eye for three consecutive rounds?

by Disco-Platypus on Feb 13, 2011 9:09 AM EST reply actions

I’d just chalk that up to different countries and different doctors. You’re going to get some variety.

Food goes in here

by Pandanus on Feb 13, 2011 9:11 AM EST up reply actions

Koscheck was adamant with the doctor that he wanted to keep fighting. He’s also younger in the sport and has alot less wear and tear as Fedor does.

by mmalogic on Feb 13, 2011 9:20 AM EST up reply actions

The Koscheck decision was a poor one, and it is good that the mistake was not repeated here.

quoted for truth, Kos should have been stopped by the doctor. That was just a very bad decision that could have lead to considerably more damage then was necessary. And as much as I hate Kos, I still wouldn’t want to see a potentially career ending injury happen to the man because of a doctors ineptitude.

by proflex on Feb 13, 2011 10:20 AM EST up reply actions

Agreed and rec'd.

The doctors should have stopped that fight in the third or fourth. And while I understand the notions of protecting a fighter’s pride by not throwing in the towel, Koscheck’s cornermen also should have considered stopping the fight once it became clear that he had nothing to offer GSP.

I think both fights should have been stopped, but honestly, I think that if both fights had continued I would have been more upset about Koscheck being allowed to keep going. At least Fedor-Silva was competitive through the first round, and there was only one round left – Koscheck fought like that for three rounds, which is enough time to sustain a serious, career-threatening injury, and was clearly being dominated the whole time.

by licensetochill on Feb 13, 2011 11:31 AM EST up reply actions

I think you all may have misinterpreted me.

That the Koscheck fight should have been stopped was precisely my point.

by Disco-Platypus on Feb 13, 2011 12:06 PM EST up reply actions

i think kos eye was only swollen on the bottom

he still had a little bit of vision but yeah it should have been stopped. the fedor fight it was no question to stop it sorry fedor fan boys. this is not the pride days that stuff is not flying nowadays.

An orbital bone breakage is an orbital bone breakage, though.

I was more or less being sarcastic, highlighting the inconsistency in terms of medical assessments that still plague our sport.

Whether an individual has fought for five years or ten, orbital bone fractures still possess the same dangers. Stoppages should be consistently made in the interest of preserving a fighter’s safety.

by Disco-Platypus on Feb 13, 2011 9:39 AM EST reply actions

He should cut to LHW.
