Won’t be able to participate as much in the comments tonight since I’ll be doing write ups and what not, but I WILL be listening. I’m expecting a fun show, should be plenty to talk about.

Kinda worried about Fedor’s fight. Would be a bummer if Silva pulled the upset, I like Bigfoot and all, but with Fedor making what appears to be his final tour of the sport, I’d like to see him at least get to fight Overeem, or Werdum again.

Question for the radio hosts

Do you think Fedor still has it physically but his fighting spirit (his mental side) is pretty much gone?

The first round was thrilling, but that second round was depressing as hell.

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains

I was watching it with my Dad, and we just sat there in silence for the last 5 minutes of that fight.

Fedor’s accomplished great things, I hope he’s done, as weird as that sounds. No need to run your career into the dirt or beat around the bush. Bubba the caller summed that up pretty good.

Fedor didn’t look good at all in there. Think he’s done, if not physically then mentally.

I wouldn’t say all that, he fought in the first round like a man who came to throw down. But he’s been vocal about not being attached to fighting anymore, and I think that’s perfectly fine.

He fought wild and sloppy, worse than usual.

Winging punches that missed by a mile, ground game looked rudimentary, just doesn’t seem like he trained real hard for this fight.

I know less about recognizing true fighting talent than George W. Bush does about finding weapons of mass destruction. From now on if I wanna pick a winner I will ask the-gentle-way.

The way he lost both fights were concerning

He got careless with a dangerous BJJ black belt after rocking him, and against Silva he arguably lost in the stand-up and got tooled on the ground by a bigger and younger guy.

The Fedor aura just…..eroded tonight in 10 minutes of fighting.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2011 12:15 AM EST up reply actions

Its Fedor

The guy could make it competitive at any moment. It was amazing to me that he survived the 2nd round, and since he survived that round i wanted it to continue but i completeley agree with why it was stopped.

I just wanted one more amazing moment out of fedor and i feel he could’ve pulled it off even with his eye swollen shut.

Postfight I am glad it got called because he could’ve wound up with an even more severe beating messing him up longterm

by 19Miles on Feb 13, 2011 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

I wanted the fight to continue as well

Silva was up on two of the three judge’s scorecards so unless Fedor got the stoppage the best he could’ve hoped for was a split draw which I think would lead us to the “4th judge”.

When the toughest guy...

who you’re sparring against in a gym with a giant mural of yourself in a wall is Guran Gugenishvili, the sports gonna pass you by. He just refused to adapt. It worked for awhile on suspect competition and his natural talent alone, but it would eventually wear out. Great run. Greates of All Time.

by John Danaher's Hair on Feb 13, 2011 12:20 AM EST reply actions

Tito Ortiz is a rough comparison. Fedor is still a great fighter. The guy talking now is absolutely right (sorry I didn’t catch your name).

by budgellism on Feb 13, 2011 12:21 AM EST reply actions

It’s not a matter of the sport catching up with Fedor. It has more to do with him being 34 years old and slowing down.

Think you're placing too much weight on importance of camp.

Rampage still doesn’t train with any big names and just beat Machida.

I know less about recognizing true fighting talent than George W. Bush does about finding weapons of mass destruction. From now on if I wanna pick a winner I will ask the-gentle-way.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2011 12:23 AM EST up reply actions

and you were impressed with him in that fight?

Camps are pretty important- not the biggest piece, but a significant one nonetheless. You need to go against guys as good/better than you to improve. At the very least, you can’t say that it’s more desirable to train with low level partners than high.

by John Danaher's Hair on Feb 13, 2011 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

It matters to an extent, but I think

that you’re placing faaaaar too much weight on its impact. Fedor didn’t lose because he didn’t go to Greg Jackson’s.

I know less about recognizing true fighting talent than George W. Bush does about finding weapons of mass destruction. From now on if I wanna pick a winner I will ask the-gentle-way.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2011 12:26 AM EST up reply actions

and actually, I disagree that I'm placing too much weight on camp...

Great camps and the fighters they produce are a huge part of the culture of MMA- Gracie vs. Luta Livre, Chute Box vs. BTT, Jacksons vs. AKA- I’m not saying it’s the only thing, but you can’t deny it’s important.

by John Danaher's Hair on Feb 13, 2011 12:30 AM EST up reply actions

Now you're arguing something else entirely.

It’s important, yes. It is not the reason Fedor lost.

I know less about recognizing true fighting talent than George W. Bush does about finding weapons of mass destruction. From now on if I wanna pick a winner I will ask the-gentle-way.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2011 12:31 AM EST up reply actions

Fedor lost because Big Foot was better than him tonight. But why was Big Foot better tonight? Is it because Big Foot has a better training camp and put together a good game plan to beat Fedor?

Coaches that help formulate a good game plan and having good training partners to drill the game plan are important.

Just BE.

by mattman73 on Feb 13, 2011 12:35 AM EST up reply actions

So is motivation.

Bigfoot had a ton of it. Doesn’t look like Fedor did.

I know less about recognizing true fighting talent than George W. Bush does about finding weapons of mass destruction. From now on if I wanna pick a winner I will ask the-gentle-way.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2011 12:36 AM EST up reply actions

So Fedor’s camp couldn’t motivate him for the fight and Big Foot’s camp did a tremendous job of getting him motivated for the fight.

Just BE.

by mattman73 on Feb 13, 2011 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

Motivation is very much a personal thing.

Like I said, you guys are overstating the value of a camp here. Fedor didn’t lose because of his camp.

I know less about recognizing true fighting talent than George W. Bush does about finding weapons of mass destruction. From now on if I wanna pick a winner I will ask the-gentle-way.

by lowellthehammer on Feb 13, 2011 12:42 AM EST up reply actions

No I don't think we are.

We are just stating that his camps are playing a part in his losses. We aren’t stating his camps are the only reason he lost. There is probably a few reason why he lost. Number one being Big Foot was a better fighter tonight.

Just BE.

by mattman73 on Feb 13, 2011 12:49 AM EST up reply actions

he didn't lose solely because of it...

when guys get old, they often have to train harder to mitigate as many adverse effects of their aging as possible. It helps some more than others, and it won’t help some at all, but it’s obvious that Fedor didn’t even attempt to do any of that.

by John Danaher's Hair on Feb 13, 2011 12:51 AM EST up reply actions

I was just writing something similar. To me he needed to evolve his training camp and training methods.

Just BE.

by Rich Wyatt on Feb 13, 2011 12:35 AM EST reply actions

Fagan is in

So I have to ask what did you think of the Showtime announcing tonight? For some reason it felt exactly like “just another broadcast”. The worst part for me beyond Gus Johnson’s terrible Fedor interview was Mauro asking Shamrock if Fedor could cut to 205, and he didn’t answer the first time but the 2nd time Frank said “I don’t know” and proceeded to look for Silva’s facial expression.

For what it’s worth, this was not a good broadcast for such an historic night in which two fighters could’ve possibly bowed out tonight.

The Mauro/Frank 205 question banter was cringeworthy

It wasn’t as much “what the hell” as much as Gus in particular was so subdued and let Mauro do all the talking. Not that it’s a bad thing but at that point what is Gus’ purpose in the booth?

I disagree with The Voice.

I don’t like changing bookings after the fact because the favorite lost. It means that the original fight would not have been competitive. I want to see the Fedor who fought Tim Sylvia, Cro Cop, or Big Nog vs.Alistair. But if Fedor gets beaten that handily by Bigfoot Silva today, then I don’t wish he was fighting a beast like Overeem instead on the same day.

Not a whole lot else

Skype sounds great, but it flakes out often. Also, Blogtalk Radio automatically dumbs things down to save on their VOIP bandwidth, so at the end of the day, even if we had people in the same room (and sometimes we do) doing it, it wouldn’t sound too hot. It’s the trade-off between being able to take phone calls live, and having good quality.

Fire Gus "What's a screen?" Bradley.

Now, but not historically. When people talk about all time greats in boxing, HWs usually come up. When talking about the greatest of all time in MMA, does heavyweight play as big a role as it does in boxing?

by xDieseLx on Feb 13, 2011 1:34 AM EST up reply actions

I would say no (essentially I agree)

But the other big thing here is when heavyweight was at its peak the majority of the best HW fighters were in Japan in PRIDE.

If all of the Fedor/CroCop and CroCop/Nog fights happened in the UFC, I think HW would be more recognized.

Yea, that makes sense. I think it is interesting when comparing across divisions. People seem to agree that Chuck Lidell is the best 205er ever. Keeping Junior at 5 or lower is insane. He fairly recently KO’d the fuck out of Werdum, plus carved a trail of death through all he’s been matched up with. Not a moment of weakness in the UFC yet. I cannot fathom why people keep under-ranking him.

I’ll give Cain credit for totally dominating Nog and Brock. Crazy how he did that. But Junior can only be one spot behind him. The only way that they aren’t 1 and 2 in my mind is if you stick to the “beat the man to be the man” mentality and Werdum is number one with those two directly behind him.

Does the legitimacy of the tourney take any hit due to 2 guys, including the odds-on favorite to win the whole thing, getting straight up retired in the 1st round? I’m not a Strikeforce hater, but that seems to be about the worst possible outcome for tonight for Strikeforce and Showtime.

by John Danaher's Hair on Feb 13, 2011 1:35 AM EST reply actions

I don't think so.

Not yet at least. The worst case scenario was a Werdum vs. Arlovski rematch in the final. Werdum vs. Bigfoot won’t be a great fight if he gets past Alistair, but the winner vs. Barnett or Kharitonov is a solid Showtime card. Ruins a PPV final though. As long as it isn’t Rogers vs. Werdum, I think there’s still a great semi-and finale to this.

Will you guys do the shows live for mid-week events

Like UFC on Versus 3 on March 3rd?

I’m fading fast and will soon be in an Andrei Arlovski for the next 10 hours. Good night all and love the show

Andrei Arlovski state*

If I’m in an Andrei Arlovski I’ve probably lost a bet and was forced into doing it for the amusement of the devil.

i cant stand ppl saying i told u so or fedor never was anything.

ppl in the states need to look up fedor’s career bc honestly ppl are hating on fedor for what? bc they dont think he is good? fedor is a average size dude who dominated the sport for yrs. and every1 is looking at his last 2 fights and saying i told u he fought no1 for yrs. he is number1 for nothing.

That hurts to look at.

In the clearing stands a boxer And a fighter by his trade And he carries the reminders Of ev'ry glove that layed him down Or cut him till he cried out In his anger and his shame "I am leaving, I am leaving" But the fighter still remains

ABC has talked to athletic commissions advising them not to sanction Barnett fight. That’s the word I’ve been hearing.

ABC = Association of Boxing Commissions (Tim Lueckenhoff in particular)

by Rich Wyatt on Feb 13, 2011 1:51 AM EST up reply actions

What I was told is that a few commissions that had been approached by Coker’s team (I wasn’t told which ones) had reached out to the ABC to get their opinion and ABC made their thoughts well known.

It’s hard to tell. If you’re looking to end a fight quickly though, a leglock is certainly your best bet.

This was the soundtrack to my night of post-fight wrap ups, and it was great. Schiavello and Luke were great additions. Always love Luke’s cut and dry take on things, great straightforward look at the event. Bravo on the show again, look forward to Thursday.
