Somewhat PRIDE style introduction of the tournament participants gets the show started. Tremendous fan reaction for Fedor.
Ray Sefo vs. Valentijn Overeem
Round 1 - Leg kick by Sefo lands. Nice overhand right counter punch by Sefo and an Overeem head kick is blocked. Right hand by Sefo lands. Another straight right hand by Sefo now. Push kick by Overeem. Oveem shoots and gets the takedown. Neck crank by Overeem and Sefo is forced to tap out. Huh...go figure, he doesn't know how to defend a neck crank. Valentijn Overeem wins by submission (neck crank), round 1.
Chad Griggs vs. Gian Villante
Round 1 - Griggs throwing bombs early and Villante looks to land some knees but Griggs bombs his way back to the outside. Nice inside right by Villante but Griggs is landing some big shots and he has Villante stunned. Big right hands by Griggs and Villante is having to look for a takedown as he's getting hit with some big punches. Left hand by Griggs and Villante is hurt again. Villante diving for the takedown again and he can't get it and eats some more punches. Griggs continues tagging him two minutes in. Villante with a big shot. Mouthpiece comes out of Villante's mouth to there is a quick break. Griggs with a huge uppercut andsome more shots and Villante drops. The fight is over. Chad Griggs wins by TKO (punches), round 1. Like I was saying in the predictions, Villante is not exactly the prospect people were trying to sell him as.
Lavar Johnson vs. Shane del Rosario
Round 1 - Both men throw bg strikes early. Shane pushes in for a clinch against the cage. Johnson reverses him but ends up right back against the cage. Johnson gets the takedown now into del Rosario's full guard. del Rosario keeps grabbing the cage and getting warned. As Johnson postures up to throw punches, del Rosario stands up. del Rosario is really using poor technique on his takedown attempts but does manage to get the takedown and move into full mount. Shane throwing some punches and postures up. Johnson isn't doing much to defend here but he's not taking enough damage to have the fight stopped. Shane abandons the ground and pound for an armbar and it's over. Shane del Rosario wins by submission (armbar), round 1.
Andrei Arlovski vs. Sergei Kharitonov
Round 1 - Leg kick by Arlovski and a nice right hand. Kharitonov looking to throw straight punches and Arlovski gets in with a right hand. Uppercuts in the clinch by Arlovski and Sergei with a few light shots. Nice jab by Arlovski. Kharitonov is slow to get off here and Arlovski is beating him to the punch. Kharitonov landing some nice body shots in the clinch. The jabs are landing good for Arlovski but now Kharitonof starts to land and a big right hand drops him and a few huge shots and Arlovski is out cold on the ground with his eyes wide open. Brutal KO and Arlovski's career is pretty much over. Sergei Kharitonov wins by KO (punches), round 1.
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Antonio Silva
Round 1 - Fedor with an overhand right and now another flurry. He's much faster than Silva early. Silva lands a counter but Fedor comes back with a punch. Fedor with a straight right and Silva pushes him into the cage. Silva leaning on him against the cage. They're separated for lack of action. Silva lands a few punches and Fed or starts to land and Slva lands a right hand. Silva pushes him into the cage again. Silva landing a few short punches, trying to stay busy enough to avoid a restart. Silva ducks down for a takedown and Fedor is looking to lock in the choke and Silva tries for a takedown but ends up on bottom. Fedor steps over and is in Silva's half guard. Ground and pound by Fedor and he looks for a kimura but Silva stands up. Right hand by Silva and a return shot by Fedor. Both men land big shots in a flurry and Silva with a takedown. The round ends and I have it 10-9 Fedor but a close, competitive round.
Round 2 - Silva with a takedown right away and he's in Fedor's half guard. Big right hand by Silva. Silva into side control and then north south before side control again. Mount by Silva and now big shots! Fedor gives up his back. Back to full mount. Big shots by Silva again and again Fedor gives up his back. Back to full mount. Fedor gives up the back AGAIN. Big shots by Silva. Silva locks up an arm triangle choke and he's turning into it. It's locked in deep. Silva continuing to pound away. Silva looks up at the clock. Silva looks for a leglock and Fedor reverses looking for a heel hook of his own. Silva gives the "no" finger and the round ends. 10-8 Silva.
Round 3 - They say the ref has waived off the fight for a swollen eye on Fedor. Wait, maybe not? I'm not sure what's going on. The fight IS over. Antonio Silva wins by TKO (Swollen eye), round 3.
