How did these guys get here?
Chad Griggs has built a record of 9-1 fighting for promotions such as Rage in the Cage and the now defunct IFL. In August of 2010 he debuted in the Strikeforce cage as what many felt would be a "gimmie" opponent for former WWE superstar Bobby Lashley. Lashley won the early part of the first round with his wrestling skills but was obviously running out of gas. Griggs took the fight to him toward the end of the round and Lashley was unable to make it back to his corner between rounds. With that win Griggs earned his way into a reserve bout for the Strikeforce heavyweight tournament.
Villante is a former I-AA linebacker who came close to an NFL career after his Hofstra career came to an end. His career in MMA has been solid and earned him respect as a top prospect in the sport. The bout against Griggs will be his Strikeforce debut with every previous bout having come in Ring of Combat. His lone loss was due to a broken arm in April of 2010.
Why should you care?
Villante is a legit prospect and in Griggs he faces a guy who is, if nothing else, tough. The winner here will be someone to watch as a future difference maker in the Strikeforce heavyweight division.
