Same here man, no shame there. Evan Tanner was perhaps one of the most liked mma fighters of all time. The dude was humble as hell, tough as nails and just a stand up guy in general. Not to mention back in the day he was considered one of the best. Years later we still think about Tanner and the legacy he left behind. I will be without a doubt watching this somehow. If you guys could find a way to post the full documentary whenever you can I would greatly appreciate it.
I don’t think amped is the correct word, but I want to see this film. I remember what Evan’s death did to Ryan over at Fightlinker. Sad day.

Yeah man, Ryan made me a huge Evan Tanner fan. I still think about the article he wrote after tanner was found dead, very moving.
And the film looks amazing.

Am I mishearing, or does Chael Sonnen state that Evan Tanner was not an intelligent person?

I’m going to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he’s referring to Evan’s writings in the time before his death.

Yeah, I thought about that, and I guess that must be it. But it’s a terrible way of expressing it and a very odd choice for the trailer.

Yeah… Chael is probably talking about when Tanner was on Myspace – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yszYYry8bNw
maybe he meant that he wasn’t in his right mind, or that perhaps people should have known his writings were that of someone who had it together.
I don’t know, I hope so at least. Because I’ve seen and read a lot of what Tanner has written and spoken – and it sounds a lot more useful to mankind than a lot of the sputum we get from Sonnen.

Regarding Chael, it’s not out of context.
I know a lot of people won’t enjoy certain things that are said about Evan in the film, but I tried to step away from it as a fan and makee the most unbiased product I could. I think that’s how Evan would have wanted it. The good with the bad.

Not defending what he’s saying, but what Chael is saying is based on a personal relationship with the man. We didn’t know him. How I am with some people is completely different then it is with others. Maybe Evan didn’t like Chael, so he blew him off all the time and played stupid to piss him off. And that would be perfectly reasonable, because a lot of people don’t like him. I don’t like him. I think it was a very odd choice for the trailer, though.
Everyone has an opinion.

What makes you say that?
I’m a huge Tanner fan, but let’s not forget that the people who knew him in real life had to deal with irresponsible and self-destructive alcoholic side of him. It doesn’t surprise me at all that a few people have less than fond memories of the guy. He didn’t get kicked out of Team Quest because he was a pleasure to be around. He got kicked out because he was fighting a losing battle with the bottle.
Evan was not a saint. I’m sure that, like most alcoholics, he could be a pretty evil bastard when he was on the sauce. If you didn’t know Tanner personally, you really have no reason to bash those who did. Sonnen might have very good reasons for saying the things he did.

The addition of Chael's
comments and a few others are to bring more credibility maybe? So it doesn’t seem like they’re just deifying Tanner the whole time. He had his demons and I think Chael is just expressing himself. Maybe we’d think a little different of his comments if we hadn’t been subjected to all his absurdity over the last year.
I can’t wait to watch this. I liked Tanner and remember being very sad when he died. He was a very interesting guy and there are some great interviews with him on youtube. I’ve been anticipating this for what feels like forever.

That is an insane idea.
That random people aren’t supposed to have an opinion on a movie documenting a mans ups and downs in life.
For example, if a documentary is released about a serial killer, I can’t judge him? I don’t care if people form an opinion before seeing it. We do it all the time with trailers for movies.
Chael is probably in a much better place to make those sorts of statements than you or I given the close community of fighters at that time as well as the fact that he trained with Tanner at Team Quest.
It seems like there’s some real venom here from people upset to hear that maybe Evan Tanner wasn’t a great hero and that people have alternate opinion’s of how he lived his life. Great biopics rarely act to purely sanctify their subjects. The fact that the director was willing to allow people a wide swath of opinions interests me more in this film then.

Chael Sonnen doesn’t think getting completely blasted and posting on your myspace while trying to be deeply philosophical is terribly intelligent or the mark of a mature adult. Maybe you disagree with various aspects of his opinion, but its his to state. I tend to think that he is more than allowed his opinion, regardless of his PED test or his trash talk on Anderson Silva.

He could have declined comment or taking part in the film. He could have said “I don’t want to be a part of an Evan Tanner film, I don’t respect him” and that would have been totally acceptable.

RIP Evan “Believe” Tanner
“It is a shame that in this society we’ve been taught to judge a man’s worth by what he owns instead of who he is. Everything is surface, and so few look beyond it. A man will sell his soul, he will lie, cheat and steal, for money. If he has it, he can buy respect. Wear the right clothes, drive the right car, have the right friends, that’s all that matters. Our lives are consumed in a selfish, self absorbed quest for possessions, the latest and the best in a never-ending cycle until the day we die. We forget what it means to be truly human. We forget the things that really matter. We lose the magic of what life should be.
I won’t live by rules that make no sense to me."
- Evan Tanner
“Believe in yourself. Believe in your own potential for greatness. Believe that you can change the world. It is something that is within each of us. Believe in the Power of One.”
- Evan Tanner
“I will do nothing lightly. When I walk, I will walk heavily. When I fight, I will fight with conviction. When I speak, I will speak strongly. When I feel, I will feel everything. When I love, I will love with everything.”
- Evan Tanner
"And to think, there are still places in the world where man has not been, where he has left no footprints, where the mysteries stand secure, untouched by human eyes. I want to go to these places, the quiet, timeless, ageless places, and sit, letting silence and solitude be my teachers."
- Evan Tanner
"I believe there are people out there that just have a warrior spirit, whether it’s fighting or something, they’ve got to do it. It’s hard to identify with me; it’s just something I do."
- Evan Tanner
"I always thought of myself as the poet, the writer, or the philosopher – I never thought of myself as a fighter… But here I am."
- Evan Tanner
"Everything’s been about the journey, I never really set out with goals for fighting; it’s been about the adventure along the way. When you’re on your death bed, it’s those stories, those little adventures that are going to be the things that you remember. It’s not so much getting there, but how you got there."
- Evan Tanner
"Evan was such a unique individual, and he was okay being an individual… "He was okay with taking the path less traveled, and he often chose that harder path."
- John Hayner (friend and agent, on Tanner)
“I’m sitting here in the motel room, flipping through the channels. There’s nothing on, nothing I want to watch anyway. Dark crime dramas where someone’s been murdered, or someone’s been raped, or robbed, or something else screwed up. There was a scene with a body and blood on three channels in a row. Every show seems to be filled with twisted intrigues, lies, deception, murder, rape, something dark. Give me a freaking break. There’s enough of it all out there in the world. I try to acknowledge the negative in this world without making the mistake of making it my focus. All the twisted crap in the real world is hard enough to deal with. I definitely don’t care to saturate myself with it when I’m trying to relax. I’ve got enough on my mind.
I don’t know. Maybe seeing some of these bad things on TV helps some people feel better about some of the troubles in their own lives.
It’s just not my thing.”Evan Tanner
“There was a time when I was younger that I didn’t know any better than to be a liar, a cheater, and a thief. I have since learned to despise those things. I have had great friendships. I have had great loves. I have been a lover, I have been a son, a brother, and a friend. And I was once a world champion.”
—-Evan Tanner
“Evan meant a lot of things to a lot of people. To some he was a drifter, a poet, a warrior. To others he was a world champion and source of inspiration, he was my best friend. More importantly, Evan was his own man. He knew his path, and he walked it, as he will continue to walk in our hearts.

I really can relate to Evan. A few years ago I was in an extremely dark place in my life. I was awake all night and I was a zombie all day. I nearly threw ALL of it away. I stumbled onto some meditation folks and it completely changed my life. Changed the way I see everything. It made things brighter and more full. I found that I was experiencing more of everything, the sadness, the happiness, felt a profound sense of love for the world, I suddenly found myself crying at what I would’ve considered ridiculous things before. I spent long amounts of time by myself, recharging my spirit. I could sit and stare at a tree for an hour, or watch something as small as a puddle of water and feel fascinated by it. I suddenly saw things more for what they were, television shows, anger, road rage, the fuel that ignited such things. It was a really interesting experience and it lasted a number of years. With marriage and kids now I’ve sort of let those things drift away, but I still remember it, and every so often I can experience it again. God bless Evan Tanner. Didn’t really know him much before he died, but his message is loud and clear.
But the most important thing I learned was how not to judge, no matter how justified it seems. I also realized that not judging is one of the hardest things most humans in our culture can do.

Also, I continue to find new ways to hate Chael. I listened to part of his interview (it's out there on Youtube)...
… and he came across as a complete dick. There is a time and place for you to express your feelings. If you really felt this way about Tanner, decline the interview. I think it is the director’s job to put the feelings out there in the documentary, since he shouldn’t be hiding what others have said. But Sonnen should be man enough to not talk ill of a dead man.
To talk of things like Tanner lacking responsibility and intellect as he did is a joke (especially when you look back at Sonnen’s recent legal troubles and steroid scandal). Granted, it makes you take what the fool said with a few truckloads of salt, at least.
I have no problem with Sonnen not liking Tanner. I’m sure tons of people hated the guy, as tons of people hate anyone for various reasons. But decline the interview and don’t speak ill of a dead man. Keep it to yourself or issue something out on paper if you REALLY feel the need to get your digs in.
If you really felt this way about Tanner, decline the interview.
Why?
If you want to create a film that tells the WHOLE story, you need the opinion of both sides. As cool as Tanner was, he was also a self-destructive alcoholic. Tanner was not a saint. Having someone who talks about the ‘other side’ of Evan Tanner makes this film infinitely better. Without telling both sides, the movie would be nothing more than a puff piece. Who wants to see that?
Like I replied to another comment of yours, there’s a way to show that without having a guy bash the deceased. Throughout the film, I’m sure we’ll hear about his highs as well as his lows, in most cases, without some dude calling him “unintelligent”. Tanner’s up and down life is just one of the intriguing aspects about the man, people are taking issue with the fact that not only did Sonnen have a poor opinion of Tanner, he had no problem being classless when talking about it.

You’re just being odd now. Sorry the real Evan Tanner wasn’t who you wish he was.

Did you know Evan? Have you talked with anyone who had to live and work with Evan? Have you had people in your life who couldn’t be counted on for anything, ever? I just don’t understand the hero worship.
by Jonathan Snowden on Feb 11, 2011 9:20 AM EST up reply actions
I think the whole reason people are drawn to Evan is because he wasn’t a hero. I wouldn’t trust the dude to mow my lawn, let alone hold up serious agreements, or some sort of plan. Dude was a procrastinator, and had jumped ship on all sorts of things. Of course there are people who were left with poor opinions of Tanner when he passed, but there’s plenty that had positive opinions as well…I think those two extremes make for an interesting person and story.

I have spoken to people who worked with Evan
and they thought that Chael’s comments were disgusting. I’m not saying write a puff piece about how great of a man Tanner was, but Chael could have said “I had a falling out with him and don’t want to speak poorly of him” instead of giving his opinions.

So the film would have better if everyone who had a negative opinion of Tanner declined comment?
What a boring damn film that would have been.
Not at all, but if all you have is negative I don’t see the point of taking part in the film. That’s just me though. No matter how much someone took advantage of me and my goodwill, I couldn’t speak ill of them posthumously.

Sonnen let Tanner live in his home back when Evan was a self-destructive drunk. I think he knows the man better than anyone posting in this thread. Maybe he’s got a legitimate reason for his hard feelings. Team Quest didn’t kick him out because he was a saint. They kicked him out because his self-destructive behavior was affecting the people around him.
Evan Tanner hurt a lot of people back when he was drinking. It’s only natural that some of those people don’t have a rosy opinion of him.
Evan. Tanner.
Didn’t he turn his home into a giant training facility where it housed those who wanted to train and become fighters…for FREE?
I watched a video where someone said — I think it was Matt Hume or Pat Militech — Evan would help out people who didn’t have places to sleep and offer them food and shelter, once again, for FREE.
Dude was an angel in disguise. Yet, you got other giant pieces of shit, like Chael, still alive.
For the record: Not saying Chael should (or deserves to) die, just meant that there are very sinister, vile humans on this Earth that deserve far worse.

Evan is controversial in my eyes
He was selfless but had so many demons in his life that he wasn’t a good person if that makes sense. It’s up to us to remember him and there are many ways to remember the guy. I will always respect him and the way he lived his life but I can’t knock someone for not respecting him as he was a drunk with little to no focus in his life.

I think
To truly be human it’s important to recognize that we all have demons and do our best to forgive the demons of others and see through to how they try to fight them and the good they do to others.

I can agree with that...
Evan was a drunk and as Ryan from Fightlinker said in a post, he brought himself back from the brink of death multiple times. He did far more damage to his body with alcohol than fighting ever could and had real issues with his personality. I don’t think the guy had a life plan at all except to have the most experiences one can have before death which depending on your philosophy is either a great way to live or immature beyond belief.
In the end though, I like to look up to him. I see a lot of him in myself in how I’ve led my life and how I am as a person. I can’t ever knock him for what he did, I just wish he didn’t leave so many people behind that cared about him.

Nah man. That is a huge part of it, but it was much more important to him to do good and help people. To love people.

That just it...
his experiences probably happened a 100 times a day, everybody he bumped shoulders with; at home, the gym, a grocery store, on the streets, etc. Being a good person to those around him made him happy and believed it could for others too.

Yes

Then he closed up shop and quit less than a month after starting. Evan was full of great ideas but never seemed to follow through. He’d make these huge plans and get things started then fall of the grid for months at a time.
The full story about the fighter house
He set it up and was going forward with the plan. It was for troubled and disadvantaged fighters to try and turn their lives around. The first fighter arrived and there was some sort of an issue (as far as I remember it wasn’t revealed what the issue was) and Tanner decided to close up shop and focus on his own training. It was a good idea, I just don’t think he accounted for what happens when you try and save a group of disadvantaged fighters and troubled youth.

Exactly my point.
Great magnanimous high minded idea.
Very little planning or follow through.
In the end, his fighter house was an abject failure because Evan didn’t think it through.
I don’t think that makes him a bad person though. He had his demons and tried to create something to help out those before they followed his path.

For the record: Not saying Chael should (or deserves to) die, just meant that there are very sinister, vile humans on this Earth that deserve far worse.
…….this is just absurd at this point, the guy took testosterone, mad fun of Anderson Silva after he put on the worst championship bout in mma history and dealt some dirty money to sell a house. Let it go, to even insinuate a guy who entertains people for a living is ranked among the “vile” and “sinister” of this earth is just retarded.
3 years since
2008 is the year Evan died. I can’t believe it’s been that long. It feels like only yesterday. He wore his fragility with a certain pride. Still sadly missed.
Can’t wait to see this. Evan Tanner was one of my favorite fighters. It’s going to be nice to put some closure on his life with this documentary. I most certainly will be buying.

The Doc looks pretty compelling…
But as someone else stated, they probably should have either cut out Chael’s comments or included more opinions that better transitioned into Chael’s beliefs. Chael’s comments kind of came out of left field in the trailer, because they didn’t appropriately connect Evan crying out for help with Chael’s comments. I didn’t know him personally, but his public persona and fights were both great. How couldn’t you like him after watching his title run? He seemed like the kind of guy who was intelligent enough to question our belief systems and the structure of the world around us. More people could benefit from these types of thought exercises.

I read through this whole thread
And I agree with Steve4192 for the most part on everything. I think it’s hard for his fans to truly have an objective opinion on his life and while what chael said may’ve been distasteful, it’s necessary to understand that not everybody liked Tanner’s antics (namely his inability to commit to things for an extended period of time). I don’t understand why the up in arms (especially from Chris-did you know him personally?) When he was such a jekyll/ hyde type of person. I think that because those words are coming from Chael’s mouth that everyone has a problem with them. It’s better to acknowledge his shortcomings but still take the nuggets of awesome truth to heart and understand that if you live life the way Evan did, everyone isn’t going to have an exactly “rosey” view of your indiscretions. It makes him that much more human to me.

A few comments.
When I watched the video I actually had to rewind it a few times to see if Chael actually said that. While I agree that he is entitled to his own opinion, the comment just seemed out of context and awkward considering the mood of the trailer. Despite the fact that Chael might have some personal insight to Evan’s character that we may not be aware of how you can come to the conclusion that Evan wasn’t intelligent is beyond my comprehension. If he would have said he was an asshole, or a flake or a drunk fine… but to question the man’s intelligence seems to be more of a personal stab at Evan, because I think that Evan valued his own intelligence and mind more than most anything else.
I didn’t know Evan personally but in the time leading up to his death I was an avid reader of his Myspace blog. I really felt like I “knew” Evan and lived vicariously through him on his many adventures. I originally came to Evan’s Myspace as a fan of him as a fighter however I grew an appreciation of him as a man, a philosopher and a human being.
During my correspondence with Evan via Myspace, we exchanged some philosophical ideas, song lyrics and poetry. Evan even took the time to send me ( and many other people ) autographed cards. Evan had a real connection with his fans and most importantly with his own true nature. I believe that he was aware of his flaws as much as anyone and approached them with a level of honesty and realness that is seldom seen in this world.
At the time of his death, I was anxiously awaiting an update to his blog and even before it was announced that he had been found something in the back of my mind told me that he was already gone. It seemed like less of a shock and more of a confirmation.
Rest In Peace Evan,, I hope you found what you were looking for on the other side.
Thank you.
This is a poem that I sent to Evan because it reminded me of him ( and of myself) and I am sure that many people can relate to it.
Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
