Bloody Elbow Radio - Episode 1: Strikeforce 'Fedor vs. Silva' Preview, Brown, Iole, More

Bloody_elbow_radio_2_medium

Join Matt Bishop, Forrest Lynn and Mike Fagan LIVE! at 4 p.m ET/1 p.m. PT for two hours for the debut edition of Bloody Elbow Radio. We've got an absolutely jam-packed debut show on tap for you. Jonathan Snowden will check in with an interview with former WEC featherweight champion Mike Brown and the first edition of "Snowden vs. Subo," where Snowden debates long-time BE community member Derek Suboticki on an MMA issue.

The crew also will preview Saturday's "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva" which is headlined by a heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Antonio Silva and another heavyweight bout between former UFC champion Andrei Arlovski and Sergei Kharitonov. The event kicks off the highly anticipated Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix.

We'll also be joined by Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports at the top of the second hour to discuss the latest news in MMA, including the UFC in Toronto and UFC 126.

In addition, we'll be holding a very special e-mail contest. We want you to e-mail in how you think the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix will end up playing out. Will a reserve fighter make it in? Will a reserve fighter win it? Can Fedor go all the way? We want your predictions, both sane and insane. We'll read some on the air around 4:45 p.m. ET and catalogue them and read them back once the GP is over.

What to expect on today's show:

  • Discussion of all the latest MMA news
  • A preview of the "Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Silva" main card
  • Interviews with Mike Brown and Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole
  • The debut edition of "Snowden vs. Subo."
  • Your calls, e-mails, tweets and comments

Nice, something to do in the afternoons after I get home from class. Also I was wondering if this is a weekly show or a daily show? And would that include weekends as well or no?

From thier original article yesterday
It will be 2-3 days per week depending on the amount of stuff happening. Weeks with shows will have a preview on Thursday or Friday and a review immediately after the event. There might also be a show earlier in the week depending on the happenings.

3 questions

1st: what issue will be debated between Snowden and Suboticki?

2nd: will this debate lead to a gladiatorial death match by any chance?

3rd: Do you guys predict the UFC will start countering this HW tourny at some point with a Anderson/Irvin type of event

Fucking psyched about this..

This is the only MMA site that I follow, and have been waiting for something like this for quite some time. I tried listening to TAPOUT radio, but the personalities on that show always annoyed me. The people involved in this site always have something insightful to say about MMA (especially those involved in this new show) and I know it’s going to be great. Thanks guys so much for putting this together. I’m always looking for ways to fit more MMA shit in my life (much to the dismay of my lady). Take pride in knowing that you already have a faithful listener before the show even starts…

Question for the show seeing as I will be at work during the recording.

If it gets confirmed how will Rashad fare in a rematch against Rampage with coming off a long layoff with a fresh injury? Will he still hold a slight wrestling advantage or will he get defeated by the motivated and game Rampage that edged out Machida last year?

I’m sure I’m in the minority here but the idea of Snowden vs. Subo is awful. Crossfire and Hannity and Colmes were both cheap gimmicks to get the audiences’ blood boiling and orchestrate fireworks and this feels the same. Hopefully I’m proven wrong and it ends up being more akin to Firing Line and a showcase for Snowden’s knowledge and Suboticki’s passion.

I think all them beat him, didnt Leben and Belcher knock him out?

Bisping, Akiyama, Nate, Maia, Wandi, Stann all beat him.

so yeah he certainly isnt one of them, he is below them, imo he is second to third UFC MW level, he would be in the Rivera, Falcao, Palhares level imo, maybe he could knock off a Leben or get a big win over a Maia, but I’d put him around the 7 to 10 level in the UFC< to me that means you aint a top guy, I’m not saying he couldnt go in and be a mid to bottom level guy, he clearly could, but talking like this guy is a former champ and is coming for the elite in the div, he isnt, in SF he has way easier fights.

he goes and beats a Lawler, Rockhold or Le he gets a title shot, you think thats harder run then the UFC MW div?

Exactly, Look I agree he is better now then when he was in the UFC i just dont think him now is that good though, he is better off in SF, I wouldnt be mad if the UFC signed him but if your him your better off in SF, weaker div, easier fights, less fights to a title shot, honestly he is a fight from a title shot, one fight vs a Lawler, Le or miller or Rockhold, I assume Miller gets Jacare and Jorge either gets rockhold or Le, if Le wants back in, that could be the next title contender fight, or Lawler, he wis he gets a title shot, thats the better career move then going to the UFC, being a fight night fight, loseing to the mid level guys and then being cut after two or three fights.

by Aldo27 on Feb 10, 2011 4:30 PM EST up reply actions

I disagree, I dont think he beats Belcher at all, or Akiyama,I think he has a chance vs Akiyama or Leben but I can see both beating him.

He isnt that good imo, frankly even the improved version who has he beaten? I mean Mamed and Misaki, the guy hasnt fought a single top 10 MW in his run since leaving the UFC, yet he gets ranked in the top 10 before he lost to Mamed.

Question for the hosts-

If Overeem wins without facing Fedor, will he face the same credibility questions as he did after winning K-1 without fighting Schilt?

Apparently not, not sure who answered the question after my SF HW GP prediction, but they thought a win over Rosario and Barnett would make Overeem top 5. He’d be close, but not top 5 in my books.

Why doesnt he get the UFC doesnt have to co promote, just like SF isnt and wont work with Bellator cause what does Bellator bring?

the guy who is lesser has nothing to lose and everything to gain, while the bigger org UFC to SF or SF to Bellator has everything to lose and nothnig go gain.

Edgar beats Gilbert you say well he is the UFC champ and hte top guy, Gilbert beats UFC now SF has the top guy, SF LW loses people say well he lost to the UFC champ,t eh top org champ, same with SF to Bellator, what does Bellator have to lose if Eddie lost to Gilbert? But if Eddie won?

SF has nothing to gain working with Bellator.

Its rather simple.

I might have to do a fanpost explaining this but Strikeforce’s success means fighters will be making more. Be it Diaz, Lawler, or Melendez making more than what Zuffa would offer them. Hendo not having to accept what was originally offered him, or future negotiations where draws like Diego or Koscheck can use a potential Diaz fight as leverage to negotiate a better deal. This is a lot of good news for fighters.

by John Nash on Feb 10, 2011 5:42 PM EST up reply actions

I’m not arguing that fighters can make more in Strikeforce. My argument is sort of two tierd. If guys in Strikeforce who currently make more many than they would in the UFC actually came to the UFC and proved that their ranking and drawing power that Strikeforce was willing to invest in them was merited, they’d make much more money in the UFC.

The issue is, that’s a gamble. Could they do it? I don’t blame them for taking the easier money and being the big fish in the small pond. I also don’t think it reflects poorly on what the UFC pays.

How is that baseless? SF outbid the UFC for Hendo after White had put Hendo on TUF and won KO of the year. The UFC didn’t just let Hendo go without a fight or they would have not pushed him on TUF. IIRC Shields turned down a comparable if not better offer to stay with SF to fight in the UFC. Did you see the payouts for 126 and the Edgar/Maynard fight? Strikeforces could easily match those offers.

by redstorm on Feb 10, 2011 5:43 PM EST up reply actions

SF did not outbid the UFC for Hendo. The UFC made an offer, Hendo countered and the UFC rescinded their previous offer. Pretty shitty thing to do, but if they wanted to keep Hendo, they’d have made it happen.

UFC low-balled him

And Strikeforce gave him a fair deal, plus oodles and oodles of sponsorship opportunities. Is there any wonder why there are so many Clinch Gear logos seen on Strikeforce TV?

by -Neil- on Feb 10, 2011 5:45 PM EST up reply actions

That seems a little exaggerated, but sure. The UFC could have matched what Strikeforce offered. They didn’t get “outbid” in the traditional sense. They decided Dan wasn’t worth that money.

Not really hard to outbid an org that pays the best fighter in their MW stable 200k. By giving him what he was asking for plus the right to advertise/market Clinch Gear at their events the UFC was out bid for the #2 MW at the time.

by redstorm on Feb 10, 2011 6:02 PM EST up reply actions

Anderson makes much more than that.

Dan was able to market clinch gear in the UFC before he left. It’s pretty simple. Dan wanted X, the UFC said they didn’t think he was worth X. He went to SF and they were willing to pay X.

That’s not being outbid. That’s Dan doing his best to work the system. Good for him.

That sounds like a classic definition of being out bid. Regardless the Anderson payout for 126 was 200K. I really doubt that SF would pony up 150K base for Diaz and wouldn’t make a competitive offer for Anderson Silva.

by redstorm on Feb 10, 2011 6:45 PM EST up reply actions

Silva makes so much more in PPV money that he’d never get in Strikeforce. It isn’t just a base pay, that’s what Chris is referring to when he says “Anderson makes much more than that.” You take a lower downside and a bigger PPV cut. The PPV money is where it’s at.

That’s not at all what being outbid means. To be outbid you have to actually WANT something and not be ABLE to bid higher.

Andersons payout is so much more than 200K. I refuse to believe you don’t know that.

Why do you think Strikeforce has all of this money to throw around? It’s absurd.

Since he’s a foreign fighter chances are that isn’t what he makes but if it is it kind of fits his theory. Japanese promotions are dying and Strikeforce doesn’t have a 145 lb division so there is no competition for him thus he has to accept less from the UFC

Look at the NFL, they owners see the revenue is going up with the tv deals yet they want to hold the players at what htey get now, and the players are like no we want the x percent b ut the owners see what percent they get now when revenue goes up so does the money the players get, NFL owners dont want it.

So frankly players arent gonna make what the owners get, if the UFC made the billions NFL gets the fighters would get millions.

Well, I don't know about THAT happening

But I would say it’s more likely that he gets an arm or something. Not like Big Foot has fought any submission greats lately.

If he subs him he's going to have to rock him first.

Werdum couldn’t submit him over three rounds. If Fedor submits him it’s going to be after a huge overhand has him dizzy.

Maybe, maybe not

Werdum is undoubtedly better at subs, but he’s also got no strikes to open up attempts.

Podcast should be ready within 15 minutes or so, as that’s the usual time frame for them.

Anyone know what Shane’s contract status is?

He wins this fight, figure he never gets into the GP wins another fight vs Sefo or anyone, Gian say and becomes a free agent, anyone think the UFC would push hard for him?

take a top SF HW prospect, the best SF HW prospect, a striker who is unbeaten and make a push for him?

I was just wondering what his contract status is, it has to be coming up soon the first deal he signed with them. figure he signed a what, 4 to 6 fight first contract? he has had three, so this would be four, so maybe he has two more fights after this then, if he wins them SF will want to keep him cause he would be at that time a top contender, and after the GP SF is gonna need fresh new stars to fight for the title, so SF and UFC could get into it over signing him.

by Aldo27 on Feb 10, 2011 6:03 PM EST reply actions

My bad, this is his third Sf fight coming up, so if he signed a six fight deal then he is locked up for a while, but if he signed a four fight deal he could be a free agent soon.

anyone know what he signed? How many fights/

by Aldo27 on Feb 10, 2011 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

Not sure what he signed

But I don’t doubt there’s a provision somewhere that if he gets into this tourney it’ll be extended to cover the duration.

by -Neil- on Feb 10, 2011 6:07 PM EST up reply actions

I’m sure Coker and the SF investors will do what it takes to keep SDR and Cormier around. Them being SF’s first truly homegrown HW studs.

In the player up at the top, click on the part that says “iTunes”, and hit allow/accept at the prompts, and it will be brought in to your iTunes Podcast section. You’ll notice that it’s going to bring in a TON of shows; all but the most recent show are Lights Out Radio, the podcast that Matt, Forrest and I did before Matt was brought on-board to Bloody Elbow. Just clear out the old ones (unless you want to give ’em a listen), and the feed will be updated by Blogtalk Radio automatically from here on out.
