Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen Set for UFC 143 in Las Vegas

Renan Barao: Photo by Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

A pivotal bantamweight match-up that may determine the next title contender at 135 lbs. after Urijah Faber gets his shot, is now set for UFC 143 on February 4th, when Renan Barao will meet Scott Jorgensen. The UFC announced the booking late last night:

Also on that card, two of the world's best bantamweights have verbally agreed to meet: Scott Jorgensen will battle Renan Barao, who hasn't lost in his last 30 fights - the longest unbeaten streak in the sport,

Many thought Barao would get a title shot after thrashing Brad Pickett in a wild fight at UFC 138, but it appears he'll have to go through Jorgensen first, who also beat Pickett back in the WEC to get his own title shot against Dominick Cruz, although he came up short in fight. Jorgensen has fought only twice since losing to Cruz, brutally knocking out Ken Stone in his UFC debut and then taking a decision over veteran fighter, Jeff Curran, back in October. Barao's epic winning streak, as mentioned in the quote above, needs no further superlative description.

Renan Barao (27-1)
W Brad Pickett (submission) - UFC 138
W Cole Escovedo (unam. decision) - UFC 130
W Chris Cariaso (submission) - WEC 53
Scott "Young Guns" Jorgensen (13-4)
W Jeff Curran (unam. decision) - UFC 137
W Ken Stone (KO) - TUF 13 Finale
L Dominick Cruz (unam. decision) - WEC 53

The UFC 143 card now includes:

-Carlos Condit vs. Nick Diaz - UFC interim welterweight championship
-Josh Koscheck vs. Mike Pierce
-Erik Koch vs. Dustin Poirier
-Renan Barao vs. Scott Jorgensen
-Alex Caceres vs. Edwin Figueroa
-Amir Sadollah vs. Jorge Lopez
-Rafael Natal vs. Michael Kuiper

nice

this will be a hell of a fight and is a great matchup for barao.

of course, if jorgensen wins, and cruz beats faber, i’m not sure what the next step is for the division.

but, if barao can’t beat jorgensen, he probably couldn’t have beat cruz anyway. and by the time TUF is over a contender might have emerged.

either way, this is going to be a killer fight.

who hasn’t lost in his last 30 fights – the longest unbeaten streak in the sport,

how is this possible when he “only” has 28 fights on his record? getting sick of UFC’s shady records lately. Diego Brandao introduced as 18-7 before the TUF finale? pffft..

Now I've switched signature to this one.

Chris Lytle's record would change depending on who he was fighting all the time.

you would think the ufc would know better in this era of the all-seeing interwebz.

I think they added like 20 wins when he fought Ebersole.

I seem to recall that Rashad’s displayed record was inflated by the UFC for awhile as well.

What about the 1 professional loss?

Did he lose one Pro fight, win three amateur fights, then 27 pro fights?

by BKdroid on Dec 9, 2011 10:43 AM EST up reply actions

He lost his first pro fight, won 10 straight, then had a no contest,

then won the next 17 which brings us up to this point. So he’s really only won his past 17 fights.

by Machiel Van on Dec 9, 2011 11:02 AM EST up reply actions

yeah

and it’s not like that’s not impressive, I don’t see the need to inflate it to sell him as a challenger

Now I've switched signature to this one.

Scotty's going to break that streak.

Barao has never fought someone as talented as Jorgenson.

This is a first.

I’m rooting for someone to convincingly beat Spotty Scotty, merely so the reign of Cruz Control can end.

Fuck him up, Renan!

Really like this fight

Barao takes the next logical step up the ladder and Jorgensen is a fucking pitbull. Should be an exciting fight.

Is Jorgensen the 135 gatekeeper?

by discoandherpes on Dec 9, 2011 10:18 AM EST up reply actions

Jorgensen doesn’t fit that category for me. He has beaten a top ten talent in Brad Pickett and actually fought for a Title. I always saw gatekeepers like Lytle or Kongo as fighters who can consistently beat mid-tier talent, cannot beat top-tier talent, and have not fought for a Title. Jorgensen does not fit that criteria, so I personally don’t consider him a gatekeeper.

as long as cruz is the champ

I just don’t see him getting another title shot and they will keep using hun to test new talent to see if they can hang with Cruz. To me that is a gatekeeper in any division. If the fighter isn’t gonna get a title shot as long as the current champ is there, like kos to GSP, he’s relegated to the status of gatekeeper. Just look at his fight against pierce, if he beats pierce he sends him down to the middle again but if pierce wins he starts fighting top ten guys. In my mind he and jorgenson are gatekeepers.

by benten20 on Dec 9, 2011 10:30 AM EST via mobile up reply actions

I think Gatekeeper's become a variable term

You get division gatekeepers and champion gatekeepers

At HW Kongo is a division gatekeeper, Mir is a champion gatekeeper

Fitch is the WW champion gatekeeper, Lytle used to be a division gatekeeper while he was around

Bisping seems to vary between the two roles

etc.

by Cunny on Dec 9, 2011 11:40 AM EST up reply actions   1 recs

This

I was literally just going to say the same thing. Inevitably there will always be a couple of different kind of gate keepers. Ones that test if a prospect can defeat a top 20 fighter (so like Kongo, Vladmir Matyushenko, Brian Ebersole etc), then you have the top 10 gatekeepers. Top 10 gatekeepers would be fighters such as what Cunny mentioned with Frank Mir, Fitch, then you have guys like Forrest Griffen, Kenny Florian etc who fall under that category. Jorgensen can be slotted in there, and would probably need an impressive streak of victories in order to get back to a title shot based on him already haven’t been beaten by Cruz not that long ago (and it not being that close of a fight IIRC)

several different gates exist, and they all need keepers…I like it.

by Thor77 on Dec 9, 2011 2:51 PM EST up reply actions

The thing with using Mir and Fitch as examples, in my opinion, is that there is a very real possibility that they’ll get a Title shot. Koscheck would have been a better example. However, by your definition, then doesn’t that mean that every fighter who has fought for a Title and lost a gatekeeper? That to me seems a bit strange. Also, if the champions change for their respective divisions, then guys like Mir, Koscheck, or Fitch, etc. could potentially get Title shots in the future, and that’s another reason why I feel that calling them gatekeepers is incorrect.

Great fight here, and I think that if Barao wins, then he should get the winner of Faber vs Cruz III. If Jorgensen wins, I’m not that interested in seeing Jorgensen vs Cruz II, but if Faber should beat Cruz, then Jorgensen vs Faber would be awesome.
As far as the fight is concerned, I think that Barao has the better standup technique, and his BJJ is top-notch. However, Jorgensen is a very strong wrestler, and I’m curious to see how Barao handles high-level wrestling.
