Miguel Torres Released From UFC for Twitter Rape Joke

Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Former WEC bantamweight champion and current UFC contender Miguel Torres has been released from the UFC following making a rape joke on Twitter. This is a very strong move on the UFC's part and, frankly, was quite unexpected. Given Forrest Griffin making a recent similarly ill advised joke about rape and Rashad Evans invoking the Penn State child rape scandal in fight promotion yesterday it almost seems like Torres was just the guy who took it far enough that the UFC could take action beyond Dana "having a talk" with the involved fighter.

The news came from a Dana White interview with Sports Illustrated:

SI.com: And what about Miguel Torres' tweet from yesterday?

White: This morning I'm on [Michael] Landsburg's show, up here in Canada, and he hits me with the quote of what he tweeted. Now there's no explanation for that. There's absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that. And the fact that he even thinks that's funny or that's a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me. Again, you're dealing with a guy that's a smart guy, that owns his own business, that's been one of the top fighters in the world forever. And I cut him today. He's no longer with the UFC.

SI.com: Was that announced today?

White: It's being announced right now to you. You're the only one that knows. Miguel Torres has been cut from the UFC and his career with us now is over.

Dana talked some to Ariel Helwani about the subject in a recent interview where he explained that the explanation Miguel gave just wasn't as solid as the one Forrest gave for his similarly tasteless joke. That response after the jump:

Star-divide

From Ariel's interview with Dana:

I deal with these guys like normal human beings and go in there and ask "why'd you say something so stupid?" The bigger issue and what I'm working on right now is what I heard what Miguel Torres tweeted yesterday. When Forrest tweeted something like that and when I called him, his explanation was dead on and it made perfect sense. I haven't talked to Miguel Torres yet -- actually this morning I did an interview here with Landsberg and Landsberg read me the tweet that Miguel Torres had tweeted yesterday....I don't remember exactly what it said but it had to do with a rape van. It just uh...man, I dunno man. It's not a good one.

Punishing Torres by firing and Rashad by fine don’t make any sense. Where is the standard?

Seems like a "Paul Daley" situation

Forrest and Rashad owned up to what they said, and admitted it was stupid. Torres, by the sounds of what Dana said, didn’t “get it”, though D was vague about the conversation so it’s hard to say for sure.

Anytime you put yourself in a position to be "made an example of"

you’ll have little right to claim it unfair.

I like Fedor, it’s just his fans that are intolerable...and his management.

Ever since he's been on Twitter, this is how Torres has always been.

The guy makes bad jokes, this is a well known fact. He is a victim of circumstance, and it really isn’t fair to do that to a veteran like Miguel without any warning.

I don't know

I think the UFC was pretty clear on its stance on rape jokes in the way it handled the Forrest situation. The fact that Torres saw that whole thing happen and then went forward to make not one but several rape jokes and then took one down just to repost it, to me seems like a time for an example to be made.

I would do something similar if it were students in a class, you just disciplined a student for an action and a few minutes later another student does the same thing, you increase the punishment because that second student had the chance to learn from the other student’s mistake.

Hard not to see Dana's position

especially considering he’s a businessman first. When Rashad made the Penn State comment. He stood there and laughed, on camera. Kind of hard to punish Rashad after that. Now being on TV with Micheal Landsburg and being told about that rape van tweet, well his hands are tied. Its stupid that it got to this point before some kind of action was taken, but maybe this will set a standard.

If we examine the argument

it actually works well, in my view. The claim is that the two jobs are sufficiently different to warrant different treatment regarding one’s actions. I think we both agree on this.

The analogy above pushes this to an extreme limit in order to demonstrate the absurdity of the comedian argument. Does it push it too far? I think that is what is up for debate. Your analogy is certainly closer to the actual situation, but the point of contention is the following premise: “If a person in Job A can perform and action, then a person in Job B should also be able to perform this action.” If I am correct about this, the analogy above holds quite well.

"All noble things are as difficult as they are rare."

That's not what I'm saying

I’m not questioning the legality of the UFC’s dismissal of Torres. I’m questioning the moral outrage regarding the actual words. Specifically, why is it offensive coming out of a layperson rather than a pro comedian?

By the way, your analogy was a straw man.

by Pantherhare on Dec 9, 2011 7:21 PM EST up reply actions

Perhaps the best response

is that jokes about child rape are offensive across the board.

A comedian sits down and works on his bit. He thinks about it. He looks at all the different angles. He understands what the line is and how to walk it. He puts countless hours of prep and work into his bits. Do you see the difference now?

It's that the world is basically a forced labor camp from which the workers, perfectly innocent, are led forth by lottery, a few each day, to be executed.

by memitim on Dec 9, 2011 12:27 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

You’re pointing out differences between the two sources, but how do they specifically change the character of the product? In other words, how do those differences make a comedian’s joke less disgusting than a layperson’s joke (which was apparently written by a pro writer).?

by Pantherhare on Dec 9, 2011 7:17 PM EST up reply actions

The Louis CK comparison is especially wrong

Louis CK is not just a comedian who gets paid to make risque jokes that some people don’t care for. His jokes (of the kind you’re alluding to) are specifically aimed at highlighting moral issues. He is making jokes in a way that is also an attempt to get us to think about morally significant themes and practices. He is not some idiot trying to talk trash or make fun of somebody else by comparing them to a victim of rape or child abuse in a way the belittles the horror of such crimes (Rashad Evans).

For example, you might be specifically referring (although you might not) to his joke about how fewer abucted children would get murdered if we didn’t demonize child rape so much. Maybe he’s wrong about this. Or, maybe he’s right but our current practice is nevertheless the one we should stick with (because child rape really is so bad, attacking it the way we do is worth the repurcussions of murdered children). In any case, he is raising a legitimate question in way that tickles us and our sensibilities and so makes us laugh while it also makes us think. If you can’t tell, I think rather highly of Louis CK.

I don’t know if you are deliberately misconstruing his comedy or if you (and perhaps) others just aren’t mature enough to listen to it, because you misunderstand it as insensitive and then laugh anyway. His comedy is not insensitive – it is ethically poignant.

Disagree. Casual fans listen to TSN`s Off The Record, and when its host Michael Landsberg asks Dana White “Hey, how come you have guys on your roster that make fun of rape?”, some casual fans might be turned off. And that’s just bad business for the UFC.

The biggest thing that strikes me is that he made the initial "rape van" comment

and once people got offended, he didn’t backpedal or apologize, but basically told everyone complaining to screw off and stop whining.

He reposted it in a slightly less offensive manner, but the intent was still the same. The real thing is, he wasn’t apologetic about it (whether or not he should be is a different issue) after the initial backlash. I’m sure that came into play with regards to his firing.

There is none

and you’re dead on. And because there is no logical structure for doling out punishments, everything is based on Dana White’s whim, and the choices seem to be:

1) ignoring and wrist-slapping wrongdoers who kiss Dana’s ass in a timely fashion, or
2) losing your shit and banning people for life for things that should probably merit a suspension or fine.

I agree with the Rampage reference, but at the same time, that doesn’t mean Dana shouldn’t do anything about this. Fact is, Torres was and is unapologetic about what he said, whereas Forrest and Rashad were the exact opposite.

First of all, what the hell was Forrest’s explanation that was so ‘dead on’? Because I remember it being a terrible way of backtracking from a stupid comment. Secondly, ’it’s not a good one’? Please tell me Dana didn’t release Torres for being unfunny, because he could’ve done that a long time ago.

by Holls Hoyce on Dec 8, 2011 9:57 PM EST reply actions

Dana's justification is pretty weak, but I understand the move

Forrest’s explanation if true, is understandable but a pretty shitty excuse anyway. Rashad was on stage, in front of the media, and wanted to win the exchange and said something stupid and apologized after and admitted it was wrong.

Miguel puts this unfunny joke on twitter, gets called out for it, deletes it, argues about it, re-tweets it in a different way, and then gets cut.

Why Miguel wanted to make such a shitty joke and defend it is beyond me. They are making an example of him because he is exponentially more expendable than Forrest or Rashad. Period.

The reason he's been cut is because:

1. He’s only a middle-to-low tier fighter at this point.
2. He’s not a star.
3. How many questionable comments had Griffin made? One. How many questionable comments had Rashad made? One. How many questionable comments has Torres made? More than one. And spaced over a few days, plus the precedents of Griffin and Rashad THE DAY BEFORE, should’ve been a red light for all of UFC Twitter that the rape jokes need to stop.

Every word you say
Every game you play
Every night you stay

O can’t you see
You belong to me
How my poor heart aches with every step you take

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake
Every claim you stake
I’ll be watching you

Since you’ve gone I been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around but it’s you I can’t replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby please

Every move you make
Every vow you break
Every smile you fake

Ever since the band Carcass went through medical dictionaries for song names

death metal bands have been stepping up their hilariously brutal shit. A few buddies and I used to get shithouse drunk after writing a good song and just come up with the most vile things we could get our singer to say over. Just so grotesque that you couldn’t feel bad about it anymore because you went so far over the top. It’s a lot harder with clean vocals, but when we had guys doing screams we got away with some really disturbing songs in a few church venues. I forget the exact phrasing but the second verse of a song was about cutting off some guys wife’s arm and using it to violate his high school sweetheart while he watched and she told him it felt better than anything he had ever done with her, then slapping him with said disembodied wife-arm.

Not sure anybody will believe this, but I used to drink a lot more…

I guess 21 years is the maximum sentence for murdering a guitarist in Norway.

And somehow he got parole a few years early, despite his prison escape. I honestly think somebody in the Norwegian judicial system woke up and thought “You know what would make the world more interesting? Putting that Count Grishnackh dude back in it.”

That’s exactly right, they don’t have any real “life-time” sentences, 21 years is the maximum.

There is some speculation that that’s the reason why Anders Behring Breivik was deemed criminally insane (they claimed paranoid schizophrenia, which doesn’t really make sense if you look at how methodical and able he’s been). Because then he’ll be sentenced to, what’s it called.. mental hospital for criminals, instead of jail. Such a sentencing doesn’t have any timelimit to how long he’ll be there. Rest assured it’s going to be a lot longer than 21 years.

Cannibal Corpse is one of the more successful death metal bands for sales.

They are really talented, technical musicians. You probably remember them as the band Jim Carey jumped on stage for in Ace Ventura. At actual shows the singer also proudly announces “THIS IS A SONG ABOUT SHOOTING BLOOD FROM YOUR COCK!” before they play the song I Cum Blood. Video evidence: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0E9OW4CzaFc

And they aren’t all that bad.

You can say that about every band ever! Guns was sick, and I think that Use Your Illusion shows that they could’ve adapted if Axl wasn’t such a nutbag…. but zeitgeist was a huge part of my enjoyment of them, for sure.

Disagree. I think some bands would have hit big no matter when. GnR was radio friendly and filled just the right niche.

I've heard all of AOD.

It’s stuff like Welcome to the Jungle, Sweet Child, or November Rain. Very friendly. When I was 9, it was 1996, so I came of age after Nirvana et al deflated pop-rock, so the mystique of GnR wasn’t there for me by the time I developed my musical tastes.

Though, when I was a teen, it was the height of nu-metal… shudder…

That's why I gave you those band names...

if you can hear them without moving some part of your body, you’re autistic or souless. Especially Fela. The Meters invented New Orleans funk, Cymande is a British/American/African psychadelic funk band and Fela is an Oxford educated Nigerian who invented Afrobeat music, rebelled against the military state of Nigeria and formed his own country in the middle of Lagos that seceded from Nigeria proper, then got attacked by the Nigerian military! Listen to 3 songs buy each and I guarantee you’ll be hooked.

I don’t know about whether cutting Miguel Torres for this is the best business decision. I don’t know to what extent the jokes will have a negative impact on the UFC, and also don’t know to what extent cutting Miguel Torres as a result will have a positive impact on the UFC. One thing is for sure: this further devalues the sport aspect of the UFC, since one of the best fighters of a division is no longer employed by the UFC, and lost his job for non-sporting reasons. So, like I said, I don’t know whether overall, this is the best business decision. It’s hard to say.

What I do hate is that our society has not advanced enough to a point where Miguel’s jokes don’t matter. I hate that unimportant jokes like the ones Miguel told damage the UFC’s image due to people’s beliefs regarding “morals” and “political correctness”. Even Bloodyelbow, which, despite the terrible name, is one the smartest MMA communities on the Internet, posts ridiculous articles about how Forrest’s and Rashad’s jokes are “wrong” and also unfunny (as though “wrong” and funny are direct opposites).

by giosanti on Dec 8, 2011 11:13 PM EST reply actions

I think they needed someone to make an example of

Forrest was a ‘first offense’ and his was taken out of context and he did donate to a rape crisis center and etc.

Evans was a heat of the moment where him and Phil were going back and forth…and I think when you tell Rashad that he has no chin that you really start to get him pissed. I remember when Rampage made stanky leg jokes…

Torres, if he had been the FIRST guy to do it…wouldn’t have been horrible…it also probably wouldn’t have been as bad if he seemed sorry.

But no, he made a few rape-related sort of tweets(99 nos and a yes, your eyes say no but my roofies say yes)

Didn’t seem sorry about it, didn’t seem to have any excuse for context…he just blatantly spat out a few rape jokes

Then he reposted the same one in a bit of a subdued manner…and he doesn’t seem sorry.

But all of this was AFTER attention had already been called to rape jokes on Twitter…the UFC is clearly not cool with it, everyone should have watched their Ps and Qs…and Torres didn’t

So yeah, he was repeatedly a sort of smar-ass douche about the situation, unapologetic is probably a key thing. Like when Daley was a smartass and said ‘I didn’t hear the bell’ after his sucker punch.

Being a smartass is one of the worst ways to conduct business and deal with issues when it is time to be serious.

alright this has gone WAY TOO FAR.

I dont care how UFC fighters verbally conduct themselves.

Rape is the most sadistic crime on earth, infact after murder i would list it as the worst thing a person can do, in several cases it is worse than murder because of the victims after effects.

I dont expect UFC fighters to be ambassadors of light and purity like they are supposed to be some fucking Jedis.

As much as Zuffa wants it to be this way, and i know they want to be legal in NYC and stuff, they did this to themselves. Dont give bonuses to people who tweet shit, they encouraged their own roster to ‘say anything’ for 5k bonuses.

Being a UFC champ is probably Torres’ dream. He sees a couple of off the cuff comments and he twitters one himself. Now his fucking dreams are shattered. Unless I see otherwise, Dana didn’t even speak with him or have anyone speak with him about the matter. If it’s a major issue then talk with the fucking guy about it and give him one more chance. I assure you Miguel would straighten that shit out real quick. Instead Dana does one of his usual “be all, end all” comments that he won’t back down on.

by Ars Nova on Dec 9, 2011 12:02 AM EST up reply actions

UFC wants to be taken seriously

If any player from any major sports league did this, it would be all over ESPN and major news outlets and that player would be out of a job. Rape is serious no matter what the context. I understand it was a joke from It’s Always Sunny. But it’s 2011. It’s unacceptable, use some common sense. Rape isn’t funny and Twitter is the wrong platform for something like that.

And it’s not like Torres isn’t an unimportant fighter either. He’s obviously nowhere near as popular or as big a name as Griffin or Evans, but it’s not like he’s some nobody, he’s won a couple of fights in the UFC, and is a former WEC champion. If I had to bet on it, I would guess Torres will be back in the UFC eventually. He made a mistake and he paid for it.

Forrest did it, and it may have.not been on all the news channels but Rashad and Torres must of knew what the backlash was. I don’t find Rashad’s “joke” so offensive but Torres and Griffin are poking fun at something that destroys lives, minimizing it, as if it’s no big deal.
I’ve read every article lately about the different people joking about rape and the support of Sandusky, and it’s disgusting. I’ve seen some of you say it’s no big deal and that it’s an overreaction. I’ve not experienced rape personally or know people who have but it’s not something to be made a joke of. I think the only way these people will understand the seriousness of it is if a female in their family was raped.
Call me sensitive or what ever you want but it’s disturbing that grown men in the public eye would be so stupid to talk like that about such a serious issue. Joke with your friends in a private place but don’t make an organization and sport that has built your career and paid your career look bad. Maybe he can be a full time comedian now.

Onkel Dana

He had to make an example of someone, so he choose the undercard fighter that just had a pretty boring fight.. Smart move, you have to take to account what you win and what you lose. This cut is a win.

Next inappropriate tweet in 3, 2, 1…

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

These were Dana’s words verbatim in the interview. It’s sad Miguel lost his job, it sounds like he caught the brunt of Dana’s frustration over all these incidents. It was the 3rd incident Dana had to deal with, he was fed up. I must say that to fire Miguel and not even punish Rashad who also made an extremely inappropriate comment does not sound fair to me. I believe Rashad’s comment was just as bad as he was making light of real world rape, Miguel was making light of a television show. I am not blaming Dana, he is doing what he feels he has to do for the good of the company and lets be honest Miguel did a stupid thing. My only hope would be that Miguel is allowed to come back or that Rashad is also punished. I’ve got a feeling Dana is going to catch a lot of heat for this in firing one fighter and not even punishing another for very similar offenses.

He sucked as fighter too.

Your argument was invalid after the second sentence. Torres will probably be

BW champ in a year at Bellator. So when he does become one please do remember your words.

My opinion>Your onion.

Dana was probably being his emotional self

when he decided to cut Torres on the air. A punishment should have been dished out, but expulsion is a tad too harsh. A suspension was all that would have been needed to send a message.

by GreyedOut on Dec 9, 2011 6:51 AM EST reply actions

Well Dana is the God Of MMA . As a dictator , he likes to ‘be emotional’ . What is a better than the power to ruin a man’s financial means and career for no good reason ?

If you read Torres’s Twitter it’s obvious that he didn’t give a shit that people where offended by the joke. Complaining about people being too up tight and stuff. He doesn’t get it. As this sport gets bigger and bigger these fighters are going to have to start realising how despensible they are in the grand scheme of things.

by BadgerBreeder on Dec 9, 2011 6:55 AM EST reply actions

He shouldn’t. If people don’t want to hear from Miguel Torres they don’t have to follow him on twitter.

I don’t follow anyone, yet by coming here I hear about all their tweets, tweets don’t stay on tweeter.

Allow me to sum it up

1) This is bullshit, Dana is a hypocrite.
2) No he isn’t.

3) Rape jokes are okay.
4) No they aren’t.

You’re welcome.

Ehhhh...IDK

The Forrest Griffin made sense after he explained how he came to it. At first it was like “Whoaa,” but he explained his self. The Rashad thing was a case of “too soon” but it was in the heat of the moment at a conference. This joke though…“everyone likes surprises.” To me it comes off kinda creepy lol, if that quote is from a show then he shouldn’t be kicked out I guess…but you can’t make rape jokes…unless you’re a paid raunchy comedian and it’s expected of you to say stuff like that…But there’s still always a line….Torres might of crossed it

by JGaLaXY on Dec 9, 2011 8:25 AM EST reply actions

This is bull shit. It’s a fairly common joke to talk about rape vans. Its been on Always Sunny and Workaholics. I think what Rashad and Forrest said was way more offensive than this but they aren’t bantamweights so of course it was ok. The hypocrisy of Dana here pisses me off.

by zstraub65 on Dec 9, 2011 8:48 AM EST via mobile reply actions

I wish I lived in a world

where fighters wouldn’t do shit to put rape jokes in the headlines two days in a row.

There is a huge difference between...

What Torres did and what Forrest and Rashad did. Rashad made a simile saying he is going to put his hands on a grown man in the fashion of the Penn state people. Forrest said something that actually had meaning, he just said it in a vague and questionable way. Torres essentially condoned rape, and actively hinted that he will rape women and roofie them and whatnot.

by DecipleofMagus on Dec 9, 2011 11:32 AM EST reply actions

You are right

Rashad literally said he was going to rape someone like a little boy; the other two just implied rape in jokes.
