Strikeforce's Scott Coker Optimistic About New Showtime Deal, No Announcement Yet

Photo

Scott Coker talked today on the media call for Melendez vs. Masvidal about Strikeforce's future on Showtime. While he said that there was nothing to announce in terms of a new deal, he did seem to suggest that things were progressing well and his tone suggested that the promotion had a future on the network.

He also said that they hope to conclude the heavyweight Grand Prix in March if Daniel Cormier has fully recovered from his broken hand.

In expanding upon the Showtime situation, Coker said:

In the history of Strikeforce since the relationship with Showtime was developed, we put on, I think some of the best fights in the history of MMA.

...

We've done our part to grow the sport, and that's going to continue. There's still a lot of great fighters on the roster. And we're going to keep building these fighters. We're going to continue putting on great fights. To me, that's not going to change. So everybody can tune into Showtime and watch in 2012, and we're going to put on some amazing, amazing fights.

It sounds like things are still positive with the Showtime/Strikeforce relationship even with the changes at the top of Showtime Sports, but until the deal is signed and announced it's hard to say with any certainty what the future looks like.

Outside of using it to snipe prospects that would normally end up in Bellator, what does Zuffa gain from continuing to put on Strikeforce events?

A place to build up guys the way they did with Nick, Reem, Gil etc that can eventually lead to big fights as they grow.

It's that the world is basically a forced labor camp from which the workers, perfectly innocent, are led forth by lottery, a few each day, to be executed.
I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.

by memitim on Dec 6, 2011 3:36 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I really hope

they keep Strikeforce around and use it like a minor league/ farm team

Plus more free fights is never a bad thing.

Yep.

It makes far more sense to use Strikeforce as a feeder organization than it did WEC.

by StephenDedalus on Dec 6, 2011 3:43 PM EST up reply actions

The UFC prelims could function in a similar manner if Zuffa was a little more liberal with cutting guys that have no business being in the UFC.

by discoandherpes on Dec 6, 2011 3:49 PM EST up reply actions   1 recs

the difference is that UFC prelims are on FaceBook, whereas Strikeforce has a deal with Showtime.

The UFC has trouble building stars. What better way than to have your feeder league aired on television.

It’s more than that. Strikeforce allowed fighters a certain amount of freedom to do other things they wouldn’t be allowed to do in the UFC. Reem won K-1, Josh Barnett just worked a pro wrestling match. Gil, Mousasi, Kharitonov, Nick worked in Japan, all the guys who competed in ADCC or BJJ world championships, etc. Daley fighting for BAMMA. It helped all of them grow and some became stars which made it make sense for the UFC to make them offers that has them focused on the Octagon only.

It's that the world is basically a forced labor camp from which the workers, perfectly innocent, are led forth by lottery, a few each day, to be executed.

Yet if they’re worth anything they’ll have to give all that stuff up anyway.

They also retain talent under the Zuffa umbrella, and give people a more clear-cut avenue back into the UFC if cut.

by Machiel Van on Dec 6, 2011 5:02 PM EST up reply actions

At this point, is Showtime really good option? I hear they pay very little for their MMA programming. I doubt any small organization on Showtime is really competition for the UFC.

by discoandherpes on Dec 6, 2011 6:25 PM EST up reply actions

Strikeforce used Showtime

To go from a thousand dollar start-up to being a profitable promotion that was bought out for 40 million dollars in less than 3 years.

Does anyone take anything Scott Coker says at face value?

by JAYGK95 on Dec 6, 2011 3:17 PM EST via mobile reply actions

True, but however nice Coker is, I take what he says at half to three fourths of a grain of sand.

by JAYGK95 on Dec 6, 2011 4:13 PM EST via mobile up reply actions

I'll take it at face value. He's basically saying "I don't know what's going to happen, but here are some ideas."

It’s the same thing Coker has always said regarding decisions/situations that are out of his control.

by Machiel Van on Dec 6, 2011 5:04 PM EST up reply actions

Cormier

Why wait for Cormier and his injury while they didn’t want to wait for Overeem’s injury to heal up and cut him instead? Consistency isn’t a strong suit of Strikeforce…

by Shnak on Dec 6, 2011 3:22 PM EST reply actions

So… if Dan was out for 2 years, they’d wait 2 years before he heals up? You know, that’s not how tournaments work… if you get hurt, you get replaced, as shown with Overeem’s situation.

^ This

It was such a ridiculous situation

Don't worry, I'm sure Coker will issue a statement in a week or so...

Finish Them!!!

Or just have the Challenger Series. Barnett, Cormier, Lawal, Gergard, Woodley, Kennedy, Rockholt and JAcare would be nice additions to the UFC’s roster. All the young guys can stay until they’re ready for the UFC.

That is a good idea

There will be more young guys to replace the current young guys when the current young guys grow in popularity and are ready for UFC caliber fights.

Maybe they should return Strikeforce to its kickboxing roots. Give stateside kickboxing another try!
