WWE's Chris Jericho Accuses Brock Lesnar of Taking a Dive at UFC 141
When Brock Lesnar folded to a body kick from Alistair Overeem in the main event of UFC 141 it signaled the end of Brock's career in the UFC. While Brock retired in the cage after the loss, I was hit with several messages from people whose opinions I respect saying that it appeared Brock was just in the cage for a paycheck.
The fact that he didn't shoot for more than one half-hearted takedown attempt against the dangerous Dutch striker had some people questioning if Lesnar truly showed up with a strategy focused on winning. Former WWE roster-mate, Chris Jericho suggested it was something more than simply a less than all-out effort to win. Via Jericho's Twitter:
To be clear, I think Jericho's claim is crazy. I don't think Lesnar was taking a dive, I just think he wasn't fully there in the cage. Which may be a signal that it really is the right time to step away from the UFC.

What could his storyline possibly be?
“I left you guys to go fight for real, but I got my ass beat back here to pretend fight”
Undoubtedly if he returns he’ll be pushed as a former UFC champion, like he’s some real life badass. He is not though, and it would be lame as shit.

And how could Brock not be one? He was over hyped and lacked solid technique. But that gorilla is a fuckin hand full.

A guy with ONE fight in MMA
Comes in to the UFC and beats the brakes off of a former champion and a questionable standup leads to a submission loss in his first fight in the big leagues and second fight ever. Then he comes in and beats the brakes off a durable tough man and follows that up by beating the champ for the title and then avenges his loss from his first fight with a bulked up and dangerous Mir. Comes from behind from a vicious beating from the monstrous Carwin. Battles a life threatening illness to come back and drop the title to the undefeated Velazquez. Battles said illness again, not to mention the mental hurdles of getting his ass kicked in his last two fights while being a relative rookie battling the best heavyweights in the world, and comes in to fight Overeem. I don’t think he was really there to fight and probably knew he’d get his ass beat but he came in anyway and gave it a go. I’d say he’s a real life badass.

Amazing that a HW who has held the HW championship in the premiere fight company and who has only been beaten by other champions is somehow not a real life badass.

I'm surprised so many of you think so highly of his badassery.
Like, come on?
He’s big, yes, and he’s athletic but a bad ass I’d say not really. There are only so many in the world and he’s not one. And I suppose you could say that he’s a bad ass compared to an everyday joe but that’s a given. We don’t qualify statements like “brandon vera sucks” by saying that he is still better than everyone who doesn’t fight professionally. Cowering against champions is still cowering and it’s not bad ass.

Sonnen just stated on his Twitter
that the UFC’s behaviour about Brock’s retiring, lack of respect has made him feel so bad that he is also wanting to retire .. then he added not immediately
I think Brock was not himself in this fight and yes maybe he was just showing up, this fight clearly showed that his is not back in shape ( it was clearly not only Alistairs force) that he did not act as he was a wrestler. I just didnt get it … was a very strange fight so all i can guess it was like this because Brock had to take care with some movement or anything like that…

I think people are reading WAAAAAY to much into this fight
With the exception of one Frank Mir knee (that glanced hard off his head), when has Brock Lesnar EVER been kneed the way Overeem kneed him last night? He didn’t defend well, Overeem caught him flush over the liver, and anyone who follows MMA knows it’s damn near impossible to continue fighting at an effective level after a flush liver kick.
I said the same thing when everyone went ape shit after the Jones-Rua fight. “Why did Rua look so slow? Must be the knee operation!” No, it was the flying knee JONES hit him with in the first 15 seconds. He got rocked early and often and never fully recovered. Overeem did the same thing.
Overeem came in with a BRILLIANT game plan – let Brock push them to the cage and introduce him to Muay Thai knees. And it worked.

Actually, he didn't.
In his first book, he explained that the Hart Brothers Wrestling School had been largely taken over by an area referee named Ed Langley, with Keith Hart only showing up on the first day to collect their money and stretch a few of them. Jericho was fortunate that Langley happened to be a good teacher, but no Hart trained him to wrestle, either as a worker or a shooter.

im always the first to defend the ufc from that sort of thing
but something about that math didnt feel right. At one point overeem had the chance to land a huge right that would have most likely been the end of the fight but he actually tried to keep from throwing it and you can tell.
Almost like a feint to distract Lesnar from the powerful body kick he wanted to throw.

This is a salient point that almost everyone is missing. I’m a Brock fanboy. Have been since he was at UMinn. But when Reem hit that first knee, I knew he was done. Done. And 1 minute later, he was.

why did you put "cheated" in quotation marks like you were quoting me lol
I didnt say anything about anyone cheating or even say that the outcome was predetermined. Im saying after the first viewing and a ouple more it just seemed a bit weird, weather brock was just acting different or had other things on his mind who knows. But overeem had a ko right hand @ 3:54 on the clock i remember thinking why the hell didnt he let that go? Maybe he didnt want to risk anything but who knows.
I really, really think he was emotionally checked out of that fight when Alistair started looking like he was going to hit him.
He definitely had a look of “fuck this shit” after that first knee from the clinch. Can’t say I blame the guy. His stand up isn’t that great and I can imagine Reem not fearing his strikes and coming right at him could have broke him down. Bullies don’t like to be the victim and see someone that they just can’t scare with their size, attitude and (lackluster) striking. Just my .02 and I’m probably wrong. But, such is the story of the interwebs.

Regardless, they're not going in there to hurt each other. If they were, the "matches" wouldn't drag on for 20 minutes at a time.
Those injuries are from years of compounded wear and tear. Something completely different to getting intentionally struck with the purpose of being KO’d or getting your arm broke.

I said it was hard on the body.
I personally think Brock just didn't care
Nobody paid him to lose, he just went in realizing he could cover up in a way that wasn’t intelligently defending himself and still get $5 million. He had no interest in winning last night or even letting the fight continue longer than he had to. I do imagine that Dana talked him into the fight and told him he didn’t care whether Lesnar won, but I doubt he told him to lose.

…thinking more highly of brock than reality may have suggested. It makes sense though, they want to believe one of their own is a legit match for a real, gigantic and well-rounded professional fighter. Brock had a nice run, considering, but the world has seen on a few occasions what happens when he takes a clean shot. He don’t respond well. If he had taken a dive, I would imagine he would have preferred to not take so many shots to his body.
dont forget about his surgery and layoff time
that surgery was a serious surgery and Brock seemed to me as if he tried not to get into big brawls or on the ground at all maybe because of that… i m not sure and we will never know. I m sorry Brock leaves UFC but he is right i think because of this surgery i dont think he will ever fight again and he doesnt really need to either.

You have to have an angle.
For him to come back to WWE after getting his ass kicked in real fighting? Running heel and saying he “took a dive” to get out of his ufc contract is the best chnce at a half way believable excuse of why he should come back to wrasslin.
But then you'd have those serious wrestling fans claiming MMA is fixed.
And I’d be made to stand up for the sport I love. Seems like that’s a losing argument because there is no convincing those hard headed fools. There are still serious wrestling fans that think its real, right? I’m out of the loop man.

Current pro wrestlers that can compete in MMA.
1) Dolph Ziggler, the guy was on the same wrestling team with Gray Maynard back in highschool.
2)Jack Swagger
3) Alberto Del Rio, because he has done it before
I trained under Jim Cozad.
Daniel Bryan and CM Punk as well
and probably Beth Phoenix who wrestled in High School.

Why would CM Punk do well? I’m a huge fan of him as a worker, but he came off looking bad in a scrap with Teddy Hart and even Punk has admitted back in his pre-WWE days that he wouldn’t try MMA since he hates getting hit in the face.

Outside of Dos Caras, you have no clue how those guys respond to getting punched in the face.

Exactly.

Lesnar didn't look good.
I’m not sure the layoff with the health problems didn’t set him back more than most thought. At his age, that kind of stuff is huge. The heavyweight division is tougher than ever with consolidation under the UFC banner. As with the other divsions, fighters are rapidly becoming more and more complete.
Lesnar’s whole game was predicated on him taking his opponent down and mauling him on the ground. If he couldn’t do that, then there wasn’t much else left in his arsenal. I think he made a good run, given his experience coming in and skillset. The competition at the top of every division is just too good now. The time when a fairly dominant wrestler could come in and rock any division is over. The top guys for the most part can wrestle and/or defend the takedown effectively.
Replace Brock Lesnar with Mark Kerr

Brookhouse hits the nail on the head
one half-hearted takedown attempt… that was exactly what i thought. As Reem said post-fight, Brock took a knee on that attempt, and he wanted no more of that. It’s pretty clear that Brock was mentally shot as a fighter, he conned me (and probably himself) that he could still compete at the top level, and that one knee broke that idea. Whether it was the surgery, the layoff, the Velazquez and Carwin beatings, poor training (Barry saying that Brock’s face was pretty much off limits in sparring) or all of the above, who knows.
I was watching Marty Morgan’s face ringside pre-fight, and it did not look confident. Right there I thought this was not going to go well…

Here's a rec
Don’t spend it all in one place.
I’m sure Brock did think he could win. I’m sure he did think he could take Overeem down. And I’m sure that first knee, which hit pretty flush, changed a lot of those plans.

We're gonna win, you know. Stats lie.
exactly.
The most powerful kickboxer on earth hits you with the most powerful strike on earth (Muay Thai knee) 5 or so times you might lose your train of thought. Perhaps not want to be in clinch range ever again….
Nawww he took a dive. This stuff is rigged.

just rewatched the fight- those knees were freaking brutal. I also didn’t see Brock get kneed on that first takedown attempt like I had thought, Overeem just defended well, Brock didn’t think he could get it and let it go.
The fact that Brock took that many huge knees to the body deserves some respect- wow.
When I watched it and saw Brocks entire chest/torso ripple from the knees
I immediately thought he’s done. he doesn’t want anymore of that. A few more knees later and a flush hard liver shot and he was done.
Is it bad that I’m excited by a fighters reaction to a good liver shot?

He took the first for a a lot better than I expected, even to the face. That last shin to the ribs ended it though. those were some nasty shots

yeah as soon as i heard him say in that one interview with Heyman
that he spent a year lying to his self and to his fans, I figured he hadn’t stopped yet. I saw Brock coming into this just for one last paycheck and I think that’s what he did.
Question
What prowrestlers have half a shot of duplicating lesnars accomplishments in mma??
Specifically female prowrestlers, and would there be any monetary incentive for women wrestlers to transition to mma or are they making solid money doing as they do
Already??

kurt angle could possibly have been a champ.

Rumor has it that Hideki Suzuki took a dive against Josh Barnett last night too.

Nobody likes to receive punches and kicks to the face and body
With that said, it is pretty evident Brock is in this category big time. Other fighters don’t show it but you can definitely tell it from Brock in every one of his fights. I believe him calling it quits last night was the best thing to do. Does not matter he promised to his wife and kids, Brock just never really looked comfortable in the Octagon and especially after his loss against Cain. At least he retires with a winning record and former champion.
it's not just that he "doesn't like" getting hit
it’s that he doesn’t react to it well.
but (big but)
Brock just never really looked comfortable in the Octagon
bwaaahahaha

Taking a dive? Umm, that's exactly how Brock always reacts when getting hit
turtles up and waits for the ref or the bell. Carwin round 1 was the same, Cain Velasquez the same, and Overeem clearly the same
ONE FC NEVER DIE
Also how shitty should Frank Mir feel after getting beat to a pulp by this dude who was positively thrashed in his last 2 fights
I can’t see a dude like Mir having anything for Cain, JDS, or Overeem
ONE FC NEVER DIE
He had nothing for Carwin.
I’d venture to say JDS and Overeem hit as hard, if not harder than Shane. Their striking is definitely more crisp. I don’t know if Cain hits as hard, but he definitely isn’t throwing pillows. All three would straight up truck and ruin Mir. Which is why he’s a perennial contender and not a champ.

I more inclined to think
Alistair said it best, he tried the single leg and he kneed him good. He couldn’t shoot after that. A well placed knee will do that to you.
I am vorn the unspeakable the skulls of those who defy me bleach in the suns of hundreds of worlds...... and you are
There's gotta be easier ways of taking a dive

Doesn't Jericho technically take a dive in almost every fake wrestling match?

Since we're being technical
He only took a dive in the ones he lost.

This guy has obviously never been kicked by a Dutchmen
Let alone a K-1 champion, you can’t fake a delayed reaction that happens with liver shots. Straight Dutch
