Fight Video: Fedor Emelianenko Stops Satoshi Ishii

Fedor Emelianenko, the long time MMA heavyweight king, returned to action last night on DREAM's New Year's Eve card against Satoshi Ishii. Ishii looked small (having previously dropped to light heavyweight) but more importantly looked far too slow as Fedor was able to beat him to the punch and use leg kicks and punch flurries to throw off the former Olympic medalist.

In the end it was a right hand down the center and a right hand to the ear that dropped Ishii and Fedor didn't even bother to follow up with strikes as Ishii lay on the mat simply covering up.

Here's the full video:

From the live coverage of the event:

Round 1: Ishii slips on a leg kick. Fedor lands his leg kick. Fedor throws another leg kick and Ishii catches it. Fedor lights Ishii up with a combination working the head an body. He follows up with a straight right down the tube. Fedor drops Ishii with a combination and the referee calls it.

Official Result: Fedor Emelianenko defeats Satoshi Ishii by Knock Out

The last two "subpar" opponents are the best thing for Fedor's career.

I think MMA ignores the benefits of tune up fights too much. Since his losses Fedor had to retune his style, working on his patience and timing. Would he have had the luxury to do that if he was facing Cain, Overeem, or Barnett?

As for next, maybe they can do Kharitonov in Russia? After that though, unless the UFC lets go some good HWs. the pickings are slim.

Tune up fights aren’t worth it with four ounce gloves.

by discoandherpes on Dec 31, 2011 2:04 PM EST up reply actions

Either way.

He has the chops to be a “high level gate keeper” in the UFC; but I think he’d rather keep fighting overseas.

He has, for sure, the chops to KTFO Mir, Barry, Kongo probably, Gonzaga, Nogueira, Rothwell, Nelson, Schaub, etc., on a given night. Or pretty much anyone who isn’t Velazquez, Cigano, or Overeem.

There is no way the going to pay him 500k a fight to be a gatekeeper that wouldn’t any since for the UFC. He will never be in the UFC as long as he wants that kind of money and as long has he has that awful awful m1

by Itsover on Dec 31, 2011 6:04 PM EST up reply actions

can you blame him ? it’s called prizefighting for a reason and that reason is about getting that paper. And Fedor is getting just that, also the mans career is near the end and he should be trying to milk every last cent he can.

by Shocbomb on Jan 1, 2012 4:52 PM EST up reply actions

Your second setence proves how stupid the first was

1. Fedor is outside the UFC.
2. There are very few (or none) high level HWs left outside the UFC.
3. The UFC doesn’t want Fedor.
4. Fedor wants to fight.
5. Fedor fights whoever they can find.

On another note, I was very happy to see Fedor stuff the Olypic Gold Judo medalists takedown attempt while on one leg. I was also very happy with the leg kicks, straight punches (and tighter guard) as well as the combinations. Good improvement.

I seriously doubt that Fedor has any passion to be UFC champion.

by discoandherpes on Dec 31, 2011 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Maybe he's realistic...

still, there’s still room for fighters who aren’t bound to be UFC champions.

by aTn on Dec 31, 2011 2:14 PM EST up reply actions

Fedor hasn't looked like this in a while

This was like a toned down version of old-school explosion-of-violence Fedor

still seemed somewhat plodding though

by Cunny on Dec 31, 2011 1:50 PM EST reply actions

I thought the same exact thing ? he looked to be in great shape. his gut was pretty slimed down and what was there was tone and tight and not flabby. His new fighting style looks to be helping also instead of just going for the kill so fast like he usally does

by Shocbomb on Jan 1, 2012 4:55 PM EST up reply actions

Good for him, I guess

I mean, as soon as he was cut by Strikeforce we pretty much knew it would be a bunch of this.

I’d love to see him get a win streak together and somehow someway take just a standard UFC contract….but I just don’t know if even the UFC would go for it.

They COULDN’T convince him to sign when he was thought to be the best…and now he has stumbled and will come crawling back…I doubt they’d want to throw him a bone and even give him a chance to prove himself.

Because outside of Bellator where the best guy he would fight is Cole Konrad…he literally has no place to go to get top 25 competition.

The biggest hurdles to getting him into the UFC

is that he still is a part owner of m-1. As rinky-dinky as they come across as a promotion; they still sold out 22,000 in Moscow and played to millions nationally; Fedor still gets $350,000-$500,000 fighter Ishii in Japan (maybe more if M-1 has to pay him more) and gets to keep the Russian broadcast rights; M-1 might get a new deal with Showtime.

As long as he can make more outside the UFC while M1 looks like it might do something there’s no chance we’ll see him in the Octagon.

by John Nash on Dec 31, 2011 2:01 PM EST up reply actions

I definitely think he can beat Cole Konrad though.

by discoandherpes on Dec 31, 2011 2:05 PM EST up reply actions

Konrad only needs 3 TD's to win that fight

and he’d most certainly get them.

I agree, the way he looked the other night I think that Fedor in shape like he was would destroy Konrad quite easy, even a out of shape Fedor beats Cole, am just not impressed at all with Konrad.

by Shocbomb on Jan 1, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

He wasn't cut by Strikeforce.

He had no contract with Strikeforce. That was DW being a dick to Vadim, who is a well known dick.

Fedor was contracted to Showtime.

Okay, either way man...that's not important

He was fighting for Strikeforce…and then he lost 3, and is no longer fighting for them…word it however you want.

Just like people like to argue that Werdum wasn’t technically ‘cut’ from the UFC.

If you lose, and then stop fighting for that promotion…it’s as good as being cut. The end result is the same.

Major props to the production crew on this fight. They must have had eight different camera angles on the replays. It was incredible. Maybe one of the few real advantages of fighting in a ring rather than a cage: no obstructions preventing seeing the fight.

Who would have thunk it? Fedor beat Ishii? Get the f' outta hear

Fedor looked solid. And I don’t think anyone predicted this fight to go any other way… How much did Fedor weigh goin into the fight?

I agree, no real suprise here...

That being said, his composure, thight guard in the stand-up, mixing kicks, throwing combinations and more straight punches as well as stuffing an Ishii takedown while hopping on one leg made my morning.

232… Not bad.

I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.

glad to see him fighting smart again

Wonder how the Werdum and Hendo fight would have went down if he didn’t come out guns blazing.

I personally hold the people responsible who were too chicken shit to hold the sign up for Brockle’s loss.

Most important takeaway for me...

Who is that huge blonde woman in the ring after the fight? She looks like she could suplex Fedor with ease.

Barnett?

Who else could even make a reasonably interesting opponent for Fedor?

Cole Konrad
Todd Duffee
Josh Barnett (if let go by the UFC)
Gilbert Yvel (yeah, I know he’s at 205 now but so was Hendo)

Anybody else?

There just don’t seem to be many options for him at this point.

by Keith Moon on Dec 31, 2011 5:29 PM EST reply actions

I’m surprised Yvel can make 205, makes you wonder why he bothered fighting huge guys all this time.

Ishii's training doesn't seem to be paying off

His corner was saying the right things, but OMG freaking check a leg kick and throw out a punch to keep the flurry away! Covering up with a boxing guard AND STANDING STILL is the worst striking defense you can have with 4oz gloves.

His corner was yelling out instructions in English actually.

by gspmademegay on Dec 31, 2011 6:39 PM EST reply actions

Well, it was not until he got a reality check by some of the better fighters that he began this stylistic tune-up, or whatever you want to call it. He fought one way for 10+ years and it worked, so there was no need to change. Then once he got hit with his recent losses, he realized he needed to clean it up a bit; he’s not such a young pup anymore.

by Dev93L on Dec 31, 2011 6:53 PM EST up reply actions

The problem was that he did change

And became reckless, wading into danger with no regard

by Cunny on Jan 2, 2012 6:22 PM EST up reply actions

Way to go Fedor, I’ll cheer ya on buddy. Hope you get to spend whatever is left of your career doing what you like.

I think the oddest thing about the entire fight is only seeing ~45 comments on B.E. about Fedor.

by Dev93L on Dec 31, 2011 6:53 PM EST reply actions

~45 comments surrounding a fight of his I mean.

…Of course, if he would have lost, there probably would have been more.

Ishii's walkout music

Huh? Is Ishii Hawaiian now? Or is he just hoping for a little of BJ’s power to rub off on him?

by Jabroni on Jan 1, 2012 1:18 AM EST reply actions

Simple formula really

Speed: Fedor > Ishii
Technique: Fedor > Ishii
Size/Power: Fedor = Ishii

while

Speed: Fedor = Zufa HW
Technique: Fedor = Zufa HW
Size/Power: Fedor < Zufa HW
