UFC 141 Results: Alistair Overeem Retires Brock Lesnar In UFC Debut
Alistair Overeem defeats Brock Lesnar by TKO at 2:26 in the first round.
Brock Lesnar threw a leg kick to open the round and then a jab. Brock closed the distance looking for a takedown and Overeem just missed a looping overhand right. Brock's second takedown attempt was unsuccessful and he was kneed twice to the body by Alistair Overeem. Spring knee from Alistair Overeem buckles Lesnar. A kick to the body dropped Lesnar and then Overeem swarmed with punches forcing Mario Yamasaki to call the fight. On the replay it showed that the kick to the body landed to the liver. Most of the punches were blocked but Brock wasn't attempting to fight back, just survive.
Brock Lesnar entered the fight 4-2 in the UFC and 5-2 overall. He had been out of the cage for over a year after a second bout with diverticulitis. Alistair Overeem successfully made his UFC debut on a seven fight winning streak. He is 36-11 in his career. With the victory he earns a title shot against Junior Dos Santos.

why didn’t lesnar take him down??
i think lesnar was looking to ‘pass the torch’ so to speak.

he barely tried once. im drunk but wasnt it a half assed single leg? that’s not the brock i know. Honestly I’m a huge Overeem fan but I was very worried about Brock taking him down and ground and pounding him in to dust ala cannibal corpse. the fact he tried to stand with Alistair really confused me. we all now where lesnar wins in this fight… his wrestling. trust me, he wasnt going to surprise overeem by standing with him.
Personally, I don't think Lesnar's wrestling was ever as good as people tried to describe it to be
and that’s just because people were that high on him. To me his success was based on being a gigantic mother fucker with little regard for anything.

Come'on guys. Dont do this
Not another guy that everyone hates just because he murder’d some guy. You’re supposed to like him more for murk-ing people
Police have mounted a Phuket-wide hunt
This was a disappointment, although somewhat predictable
I kind of feel like Brock just showed up for the paycheck this time and had mentally already “retired” long before the fight started. Props to Reem of course, that was some absolutely vicious body work. Lesnar just looked like he didn’t have the fire to compete any more, though. Good on him knowing to quit while he’s ahead.
"Anderson Silva is the best fighter in MMA today. If you don't enjoy watching him fight, you have no heart." - Fraser Coffeen
Of course he did. Did anyone seriously expect him to challenge Overeem
At his own game? They were overhyping Lesnar wrestling and were hoping that that would make for a good match.

He wont be able to clinch like that with JDS, he walked in with his hand out looking for the clinch, JDS will clip him hard if he tries that.
Well, to be fair, the reason he did that was because he had literally no respect for Lesnar’s striking. You’ll also notice he kept his hands down extra low to prevent Brock’s wrestling.

he seemed legitimately broken in spirit after the fight. He will live the rest of his days on the farm with his family. He seems like a good family man outside of the combat world. He’s a small town guy and it really came out in his post fight interview tonight.
Getting kicked in the body by The Reem has go to suck
Getting kicked in the liver by the same guy is 10x worse.
Brock exposed as nothing more than a big bully
who crumples when someone his own size fights back. Overeem was barely punching, just reaching out for the muay thai clinch, and Brock was too scared to throw punches to make him pay.
by Pantherhare on Dec 31, 2011 12:29 AM EST reply actions 8 recs
Brock was exposed as a guy that went for way too much way too early. A guy, 6 fights into his career shouldn’t be fighting a world killer for a #1 contender shot. He was plenty confident when he was fighting people he could physically dominate, when he couldn’t he didn’t have that confidence and his skill ran out of the room with it. But I think that calling him a bully is going a bit far.

The UFC should have never hyped Brock's wrestling up like they did.
They actually expected him to go in there and perform at the highest level after surgery just because he could “take the guy down”. Realistically I like Brock, he’s awesome. But he had no chance in this fight at all. He has been overhyped and overrated his entire career, and as nice as he is I’m glad he retired.

Hard to believe that’s the same dude that got his ass kicked by all the good light heavies
"I can kick you really hard." - Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
the power in his knees is absurd
and it further proves my point that mid pack lhws looking for a new division should just pack on the pounds instead of cutting them
"I have smoked weed with alot of UFC champions" - Joe Rogan
"Você ta fudido. Se vai levar muita porrada, ta ligado?" - Anderson Silva
Easier said than done. No way they can have as much success as Overeem.
"Referees, be sure to step in and stop the fight on time tomorrow, because I might get carried away in the moment and my many punches may end up destroying my opponent." - Tatsuya "CRUSHER" Kawajiri
but its easier to have success at hw then lhw
"I have smoked weed with alot of UFC champions" - Joe Rogan
"Você ta fudido. Se vai levar muita porrada, ta ligado?" - Anderson Silva
For sure. But just because Overeem turned his career around at HW doesn’t mean other LHWs can do the same. The move from LHW to HW is not only risky but also requires a big commitment.
"Referees, be sure to step in and stop the fight on time tomorrow, because I might get carried away in the moment and my many punches may end up destroying my opponent." - Tatsuya "CRUSHER" Kawajiri
It is not a guarantee. Griffin, Rampage, Jones could easily just jump to HW but wouldn’t even though its the “easier” division. The weight range is a big factor. The Antonio SIlva’s of the division is pretty hard to defeat if your are just 230sh pound.
mike kyle and daniel cormier are natural 205ers
they did ok against bigfoot

Very few LHWs have his frame
Even Jon Jones looks like more of an ectomorph to me. I don’t know if he would be able to absorb all that bulk. Overeem was born to be a HW.

I don't know more about MMA than you, I just act like it at www.headkicklegend.com
That's not fair to overeem.
His problem with top tier LHW’s in Pride was being competitive with them for more than 3 minutes. If you look at his fights with Little Nog, Chuck, Ricardo Arona and Shogun you can see his problem was fading and wilting…not so much talent or technique (or even his chin). He was 6’5 and 222 pounds when he was 19, it was probably a bad idea to keep trying for 205.
www.instrength.com Pretty decent MMA forum.

got his asskicked isn't exactly the most accurate way to put it
overeem at 205 would always do really good in the first few minutes, then he would gas and lose, if you watch the lil nog and shogun fights imo he was actually winning before he gassed…
Yep. He would always gas out after the first three minutes. It would pathetic, really. I have faith he’s in his natural weight class now.

Overeem vs. JDS is sick sick fight but...
sad for Lesnar. Changed the sport and drew tons of money. I think he’ll actually make one more WWE appearance now. F5! haha

If the fights on Fox consistently get 10 million plus viewers
maybe they could alter the deal with fox for more shows. go exclusively to Fox and FX for big fights

They’d have to really go mainstream, and they’d have to somehow change the public’s perception of MMA as entertainment before sport.
I’ve said this before – MMA will have truly made it when people start sitting on their couches every Saturday and gladly watch the most boring fights ever, like with most mainstream sports.
you are right
when some of my friends are excited about the NCAA football national championship, a rematch of the worst game this year, and they complain about guys laying on each other in MMA, its kinda insane.

yea that pretty much sounds perfect
when people watch every fight like how they watch sunday night baseball or something boring as shit we’ll know we made it big
most people want instant gratification from fights though, they dont wanna see anything but knockouts.
"I have smoked weed with alot of UFC champions" - Joe Rogan

Who watches Sunday Night Baseball?
Unless your favorite team is involved? That shit get way low ratings.
"Life isn't Fucking fair! Deal with it." Dad.
Monday night football is a better example, then. I don’t know what kind of ratings baseball gets anymore.
Monday Night Football
Gets great ratings for ESPN, the fantasy world makes it even more of a monster than it used to be. I still don’t understand the comparision.
"Life isn't Fucking fair! Deal with it." Dad.
Football games can be slow or boring but people still watch them eagerly. MMA needs that if it ever wants to be mainstream.
Who want to be mainstream?
2 different monsters between watching football on Sunday and watching MMA on Saturday nights. It will never be main stream.
"Life isn't Fucking fair! Deal with it." Dad.
This is silly
The UFC will never go main stream and you are silly if you think they want to at this point. “Only” scoring 7 million PPVs in a year might be a failure to you and most morons in the media but until that number gets really low (like 2 mil per year), Shit aint changing,
Why can’t you guys just steal PPVs and shut the fuck up. There are going to 15 free events this year, Just steal the rest and shut the fuck up.
"Life isn't Fucking fair! Deal with it." Dad.
It does not.

I wonder about the serious part
Only because of the rumors about how he disallowed sparring during training or getting punched or kicked in the face. Even Sylvia mentioned how he was instructed to go easy on Brock and not do any leg kicks at his time at Miletech?
But has any of that ever been confirmed?

So what happens if Overeem fails the drug test he took before the fight? Will Brock magically rescind his retirement? ;)
He just took a test last week
and passed. No one is stupid enough to take anything right before taking a test that he knows about.

Fuck asking. Let’s just laugh at them. HAHAHAHHA
ONE FC NEVER DIE
Brock didn’t really look like much of a wrestler in this. It didn’t even look like he tried to clinch at all. He’s so weird, when he gets in there against someone who’s large and skilled, he sort of fights with his head leaning way back and his hands are basically saying “Please don’t, stop that, it’s rude”.
With all the training he gets, it surprises me that he never overcame that. I think that all in all, if Brock were to have built himself up steadily, he’d probably have become a truly great fighter, and would’ve had the skill to take that fight to the mat, as it is though, he went to the highest level of fighters way to fast, and put way too much into his wins against Mir.
