UFC 141 Results: Alistair Overeem Retires Brock Lesnar In UFC Debut

Alistair Overeem UFC 141 Weigh Ins by Esther Lin

Alistair Overeem defeats Brock Lesnar by TKO at 2:26 in the first round.

Brock Lesnar threw a leg kick to open the round and then a jab. Brock closed the distance looking for a takedown and Overeem just missed a looping overhand right. Brock's second takedown attempt was unsuccessful and he was kneed twice to the body by Alistair Overeem. Spring knee from Alistair Overeem buckles Lesnar. A kick to the body dropped Lesnar and then Overeem swarmed with punches forcing Mario Yamasaki to call the fight. On the replay it showed that the kick to the body landed to the liver. Most of the punches were blocked but Brock wasn't attempting to fight back, just survive.

Brock Lesnar entered the fight 4-2 in the UFC and 5-2 overall. He had been out of the cage for over a year after a second bout with diverticulitis. Alistair Overeem successfully made his UFC debut on a seven fight winning streak. He is 36-11 in his career. With the victory he earns a title shot against Junior Dos Santos.

Honestly I’m a huge Overeem fan but I was very worried about Brock taking him down and ground and pounding him in to dust ala cannibal corpse. the fact he tried to stand with Alistair really confused me. we all now where lesnar wins in this fight… his wrestling. trust me, he wasnt going to surprise overeem by standing with him.

This was a disappointment, although somewhat predictable

I kind of feel like Brock just showed up for the paycheck this time and had mentally already “retired” long before the fight started. Props to Reem of course, that was some absolutely vicious body work. Lesnar just looked like he didn’t have the fire to compete any more, though. Good on him knowing to quit while he’s ahead.

He wont be able to clinch like that with JDS, he walked in with his hand out looking for the clinch, JDS will clip him hard if he tries that.

by Phenom FW on Dec 31, 2011 12:28 AM EST up reply actions

Well, to be fair, the reason he did that was because he had literally no respect for Lesnar’s striking. You’ll also notice he kept his hands down extra low to prevent Brock’s wrestling.

Cain got dropped like every start of a round in his fight with Kongo. He was never the “heavyweight GSP” they made him out to be with “no flaws.” I never was sold on Cain’s striking defense, especially against a shark like Dos Santos.

Brock was exposed as a guy that went for way too much way too early. A guy, 6 fights into his career shouldn’t be fighting a world killer for a #1 contender shot. He was plenty confident when he was fighting people he could physically dominate, when he couldn’t he didn’t have that confidence and his skill ran out of the room with it. But I think that calling him a bully is going a bit far.

The UFC should have never hyped Brock's wrestling up like they did.

They actually expected him to go in there and perform at the highest level after surgery just because he could “take the guy down”. Realistically I like Brock, he’s awesome. But he had no chance in this fight at all. He has been overhyped and overrated his entire career, and as nice as he is I’m glad he retired.

The very top of HW is scary as hell

But you can be a top 10 HW much easier than a top 10 LHW.

by crazybones on Dec 31, 2011 12:47 AM EST up reply actions

It is not a guarantee. Griffin, Rampage, Jones could easily just jump to HW but wouldn’t even though its the “easier” division. The weight range is a big factor. The Antonio SIlva’s of the division is pretty hard to defeat if your are just 230sh pound.

Very few LHWs have his frame

Even Jon Jones looks like more of an ectomorph to me. I don’t know if he would be able to absorb all that bulk. Overeem was born to be a HW.

That's not fair to overeem.

His problem with top tier LHW’s in Pride was being competitive with them for more than 3 minutes. If you look at his fights with Little Nog, Chuck, Ricardo Arona and Shogun you can see his problem was fading and wilting…not so much talent or technique (or even his chin). He was 6’5 and 222 pounds when he was 19, it was probably a bad idea to keep trying for 205.

www.instrength.com Pretty decent MMA forum.

by Super Dingus on Dec 31, 2011 12:41 AM EST up reply actions

got his asskicked isn't exactly the most accurate way to put it

overeem at 205 would always do really good in the first few minutes, then he would gas and lose, if you watch the lil nog and shogun fights imo he was actually winning before he gassed…

by C.A.M. on Dec 31, 2011 12:37 AM EST up reply actions

Yep. He would always gas out after the first three minutes. It would pathetic, really. I have faith he’s in his natural weight class now.

Brock didn’t really look like much of a wrestler in this. It didn’t even look like he tried to clinch at all. He’s so weird, when he gets in there against someone who’s large and skilled, he sort of fights with his head leaning way back and his hands are basically saying “Please don’t, stop that, it’s rude”.

With all the training he gets, it surprises me that he never overcame that. I think that all in all, if Brock were to have built himself up steadily, he’d probably have become a truly great fighter, and would’ve had the skill to take that fight to the mat, as it is though, he went to the highest level of fighters way to fast, and put way too much into his wins against Mir.
