UFC 141's Brock Lesnar And Big Show Collapse Ring On Smackdown
On the final day of Brocksmas Matt Roth gave to me, Brock Lesnar and Big Show collapsing the ring.
It's the final day of Brocksmas, the professional wrestling career retrospective of Brock Lesnar. And I've saved the best moment for last. Brock Lesnar had captured the WWE heavyweight belt after defeating Kurt Angle at Wrestlemania 19, even after the botched shooting star press which could have ended his career. Riding a wave of popularity, the WWE entered him into a program with their biggest superstar: The Big Show!
The Big Show is billed as 7 feet tall and 485 pounds making him the largest wrestler on the WWE's roster. Lesnar at his heaviest walked around at around 295 pounds. It truly was a case of what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object.
On an episode of Smackdown, then the WWE's Thursday night programming, the Big Show and Lesnar met in the ring. In front of a sold out crowd at the TD Waterhouse Center in Orlando, Florida the two big men squared off for Lesnar's belt. What happened next absolutely no one expected, including the ring announcers who were as surprised as the crowd in attendance.
More coverage and video after the jump...
SBN coverage of UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem
The set up was for Big Show to finish Lesnar from the top rope. Lesnar hit a chop to escape and then climbed the ropes for a superplex. Considering the size of the two men it was a move that absolutely no one expected to ever see. When they finally landed on the mat, the combination of the force and momentum caused the ring to collapse. It was a true "HOLY SH*T!" moment.
The crowd's reaction as well as the reaction of Michael Cole and Taz were as genuine as you'll find in professional wrestling. The ring had never collapsed before which made this a truly unique and great moment. While the ring was likely gimmicked, it created enough suspension of belief that was possible that the combined weight and force of the two actually caused the ring to implode. I hope you've enjoyed this series and maybe you'll see it again sooner rather than never.

Two heavyweights really bent it
I wanna say Travis Brown was in the fight, but I remember when two HWs were fighting. One guy shot on the other and he wnet in the cage and the wall went back a good foot.

Some of us were wrestling fans when we were younger.
It’s normal to still like what you liked as a kid.
During Lesnar’s run in WWE I was 11 years old, why can’t I enjoy revisiting something that I liked when I was younger? It’s like shitty 80’s synth pop, it may be stupid but if you enjoyed it when you were younger you probably enjoy it now.

If you disagree with the history nottheface detailed you can’t deny that JMMA was rooted deeply in professional wrestling, which kept MMA afloat for a very long time. Also, look at some of the best selling PPV’s of the UFC over the years. You will find that most times either Dan Severn, Ken Shamrock or Brock Lesnar were involved.

I just dont agree that without “Professional” wrestling there would be no UFC.
Wrestling, boxing, JJ, and fighting in genereal have been around forever. This is the information age where you can see whatever you like on tv/internet etc. and MMA connects with a lot of younger males for the same reason those individual sports do. I just dont likee when everyone tries to take credit for this or that

Without PRIDE and eventually TUF I think it would have been very difficult for MMA and the UFC to survive the dark times. Both are rooted heavily in pro-wrestling in different ways.

No. Incorrect.
I’ve done this series because no one has ever done it. Brock has 7 fights, 2 bouts with diverticulitis, and one tuf season. That’s his MMA career. Why ignore what actually made him a star? Has it gotten a ton of traffic? Yes. But that’s just a benefit.
MMA/vale tudo/judo/bjj all are connected to pro wrestling. Both the campy thing you see on television and the catch-as-catch-can wrestling from the 1900s.
by Matthew Roth on Dec 30, 2011 2:32 PM EST up reply actions
Everyone on this site and their Grandma knows Brock got famous from WWE
But putting up a new random video clip of him from his WWE days everyday with a little description of it just doesn’t seem as important as actual MMA news. Just my opinion. Like I said earlier I don’t complain when these articles are posted. Unfortunately this thread had become a drawn out discussion that is now turning into that.
I think they have some common historic connections, just not that without one there would never be another.
These are opinions on both sides, each have facts to support. blah blah blah.

Historically speaking the catch wrestlers of the 1900s were viewed as tough guys
And many of the top guys challenged the Gracies when they made their trips around the world. The also challenged the judo guys. The idea of proving your style is the best kinda came out of that carny mindset challenging people in the crowds.
Modern MMA is connected more with professional wrestling than other sports not just because of the PPV model but also because it’s not truly a sport in the most basic definition. If it was pure sport then efficient fighters like Jon Fitch would be challenging for titles. It just happens that the sport is closer to sports entertainment with the most marketable person getting the shot.
by Matthew Roth on Dec 30, 2011 2:51 PM EST up reply actions
Take a look at UFC 1
What did they say was the premise for that. To try different martial arts against each other and see which would win. I’d say that has less to do with catch wrestling than modern day MMA.
Fighting and combat sports have manifested themselves in may different forms. You can argue your point til youre blue in the face that it’s a linear evolution that professional wrestling lead to the UFC or MMA (this thread was started when Memtim said UFC came from pro wrestling) but I just don’t agree with that.
No, your dumb
by RashadsLeftNipple on Dec 30, 2011 3:18 PM EST up reply actions
UFC 1, with Ken Shamrock, the guy from Pancrese, which was real pro wrestling has no connection to pro wrestling?
You're like a child wandering into a movie...
I never said there was no connection. please read before you comment.
This discussion started from someone saying without professional wrestling there would be no UFC. Most of my argument has been based on the fact that combat sports have existed for quite some time in many different cultures and disciplines and the UFC did not come to exist because of a linear evolution resulting from professional wrestling.
Also, fuck Ken Shamrock
No, your dumb
by RashadsLeftNipple on Dec 30, 2011 4:17 PM EST up reply actions
But professional combat sports - prizefighting - is relatively new
After dying out in the ancient world it sprung up in 16th-17th England. The British empire basically spread the idea of pro fighting.
As for why MMA is related to pro wrestling it’s because it is. It’s the direct descendant of it. In the early 20th, before it became theater, the professional wrestling biz pitted different styles of wrestling against each other as well as against boxing, judo/jujutsu, and savate. Basically mixed martial arts. To allow everyone to use their techniques there was something called “all-in” or “anything goes” wrestling. When wrestling went fake they used all-in rules because it was more exciting, so in Japan when they started doing MMA all they originally did is start wrestling under all-in rules for real.
In Brazil they never stopped doing it for real. A bunch of Japanese, European, and American wrestlers introduced the “anything goes” concept of having different disciplines fight each other to Brazil which they called vale tudo. Vale tudo is Portuguese for “anything goes”. It’s the same old pre WWI wrestling under a Portuguese name.
Ahhh! They called in the expert! :)
That was a good article with great history and insight by the way.
First off I never said MMA wasn’t related to wrestling in any way. So scratch your first point.
If you want to label fighting as professional wrestling, that’s fine. Fighting has been around forever- armed, unarmed, whatever. People have always enjoyed it, whether it was considered professional or not. I think they all share a common history and background, yadda yadda yadda.
I will never agree that without professional wrestling there wouldn’t have been a UFC. The concept of using all the techniques wasnt even considered then. it was more about 1 style vs another at first. Lots of martial art disciplines focus on multiple aspects of fighting or defense. MMA was a natural evolution as fighters learn about other disciplines, skills, etc and strive to better themselves.
It just seems you want to label MMA as professional wrestling because professional wrestling used a variety of moves in their no-holds barred fighting. I don’t agree with that labeling

Bubble Burst...
About a year ago, I watched a shoot interview on Kayfabe commentaries.com with Tazz. They all knew the ring would collapse, Shane McMahon told Tazz and Michael Cole to sell it as best as possible, with a “holy shit”. because the show is taped on a Tuesday, they knew they could edit it. And Terry Taylor is the asshole that ripped the “ring break” off ECW, with Bam Bam Bigelow and Tazz in 98. Now WWE uses it as a running gimmick to get a superstar over.

I'm loving these articles. I was at one point
as big an MMA snob as one could be. I hated that it was constantly compared to wrestling, that it wasn’t considered a true sport, that the athletes weren’t considered some of the best in the world, that it was considered a blood, or fringe, or unnecessarily violent sport. I trained MMA, fought mma, and looked down on those who watched the silliness of Professional Wrestling (which I loved the hell out of as a kid during the boom years of the WCW/WWE feud). I’d grown up and moved past it.
Now, a decade or so later, I just don’t care anymore. The WWE is incredibly entertaining, they have some amazing athletes who do amazing things, and aside from some of the more ridiculous soap opera aspects of the shows (the monologues kill me), I’m starting to enjoy it again.
As for its relevance to MMA, there have been very good fan posts describing how mma and pro wrestling will always be linked. The top MMA star in the world didn’t become so by being the best fighter in the world, but by having name recognition and bringing over a huge pro wrestling audience who wanted to see if he could do the real thing. He did, and we’ll see tonight if he can do it again.
