Have you ever heard of a guy winning his first four fights in the uber-tough UFC lightweight division and getting completely ignored? I guess that happens when you try to use your fame to play politics. One the other side, you've got a guy that most predicted as a future contender, but he fizzled out just as quickly as he rose to prominence. Future presidential candidate versus former TUF winner. Jacob Volkmann (13-2, 4-2 UFC) meets Efrain Escudero (18-3, 3-2 UFC).
Neither fighter is currently ranked in the USA Today/BE Consensus Rankings, but Volkmann will have to enter consideration if he's able to pick up another win here. He's currently 4-0 as a lightweight, as stated above. Escudero had a ton of potential coming off TUF and it seemed like only a matter of time before he graced the list. Unfortunately it hasn't gone according to plan for him and it'll take a few more wins to earn some consideration. This lightweight UFC 141 fight will be take place on the preliminary card, and will be streamed live on Facebook. The stream begins at approximately 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT.
How do these two stack up?
Volkmann: 31 years old | 5'9" | 71.5" reach
Escudero: 25 years old | 5'9" | 71" reach
What have these two done recently?
Volkmann: W - Danny Castillo (UD) | W - Antonio McKee (SD) | W - Paul Kelly (UD)
Escudero: W - Cesar Avila (SUB) | W - Mike Rio (UD) | L - Fabricio Camoes (UD)
How did these two get here?
Jacob "Christmas" Volkmann is a three-time NCAA Division 1 All-American in wrestling and made the transition to MMA in 2007. Nine straight wins as a welterweight, including one on a Bellator undercard, earned him a shot in the UFC. He was stuck facing stiff competition immediately due to his credentials, and looked overmatched in losses to Martin Kampmann and Paulo Thiago. It's amazing what can happen if you cut a few pounds though, and Volkmann has been a force at lightweight so far with four straight wins.
Efrain "Hecho en Mexico" Escudero has seen some major highs and major lows in his five year stint as an MMA fighter. Ten wins in a row earned him a spot on TUF 8, where he ran through the competition on the way to taking the title. A big win over Cole Miller followed, and he seemed destined for big things. Escudero suffered a major setback by losing to Evan Dunham though, and while he picked up a win over Dan Lauzon shortly thereafter, he showed up overweight and was submitted by Charles Oliveira at UFC Fight Night 22. Despite having a winning record, he was released from the promotion and called out by Dana White, who said 'You're not taking this as serious as you should be." Ouch. A 5-1 run in the minors earned him another shot as a late replacement for T.J. Grant. What can he do with it? We'll find out tonight.
Why should you care?
Volkmann has used politics to become a polarizing figure. You likely love him or hate him. Throw him in the cage with a talented former TUF winner, and it might be worth a watch.
