UFC 141 Fight Card Primer: Ross Pearson vs. Junior Assuncao

Image via Esther Lin

In the blue corner: a former Ultimate Fighter winner who has decided to drop to featherweight despite an impressive resume at lightweight. In the red corner: a guy who's been scratching and clawing for four years to get back into the UFC, and has recently made the drop to featherweight as well. Ross Pearson (12-5, 4-2 UFC) meets Junior Assuncao (13-4, 1-2 UFC).

Neither fighter is currently ranked at featherweight in the USA Today/BE Consensus Rankings, but that shouldn't come as much of a surprise considering their inexperience at 145. This is Pearson's debut, and Assuncao's second fight there. That being said, it shouldn't take long to climb up the ladder in a semi-shallow division, and I wouldn't be shocked to see either crack the top 25 with a win in this fight. This featherweight UFC 141 fight will be take place on the preliminary card, and will be shown live on Spike TV. The Spike show begins at approximately 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

How do these two stack up?

Pearson: 27 years old | 5'8" | 69" reach
Assuncao: 30 years old | 5'9" | 69" reach

What have these two done recently?

Pearson: L - Edson Barboza (SD) | W - Spencer Fisher (UD) | L - Cole Miller (SUB)
Assuncao: W - Eddie Yagin (UD) | W - Wesley Murch (SUB) | W - Mark Miller (KO)

How did these two get here?

Ross "The Real Deal" Pearson is a British fighter who got his big break as a member of Team Bisping on The Ultimate Fighter 9. He progressed all the way through and managed to win the whole thing. He then went on to defeat veterans Aaron Riley and Dennis Siver, but was stopped in his tracks by Cole Miller who submitted Pearson at UFC Fight Night 22. Pearson turned it around with a win over Spencer Fisher, but dropped a very close split decision to Edson Barboza at UFC 134, which made him decide to drop to 145.

Junior Assuncao entered the UFC with just five pro fights way back at UFC 64, and promptly got submitted by Kurt Pellegrino. He won his next bout, but was finished by Nate Diaz at UFC Fight Night 11 and released from the promotion. He went 7-1 in the minors, but it took a drop to 145 for the UFC to come calling again. He defeated the much smaller Eddie Yagin by decision at UFC 135, and will look to stay unbeaten at 145 with a win over Pearson.

Why should you care?

Pearson's first fight at 145 brings a lot of questions - will he have more power? How will his cardio be? Assuncao is no slouch either, and this should be an interesting technical battle.
