UFC 141 Fight Card Primer: Danny Castillo vs. Anthony Njokuani

WEC never die! People thought the WEC lightweights were lame ducks entering the UFC. Top guys like Donald Cerrone and Ben Henderson have put that rumor to bed, but even the mid-tier WEC lightweight have looked pretty good in the UFC so far. Unfortunately, it just happened to work out that two of them are stuck facing each other due to an injury to Ramsey Nijem. Danny Castillo (12-4, 2-1 UFC) meets Anthony Njokuani (14-5, 1 NC, 1-1 UFC).

Neither fighter is currently ranked at lightweight USA Today/BE Consensus Rankings, which has a little to do with them being relatively new to the UFC, and has a little to do with how inconsistent both fighters are. A win here isn't likely to impact their ranking all that much. This lightweight UFC 141 fight will be take place on the preliminary card, and will shown live on Spike TV. The Spike show begins at approximately 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT.

How do these two stack up?

Castillo: 32 years old | 5'9" | 71" reach
Njokuani: 31 years old | 6'1" | 75.5" reach

What have these two done recently?

Castillo: W - Shamar Bailey (TKO) | L - Jacob Volkmann (UD) | W - Joe Stevenson (UD)
Njokuani: W - Andre Winner (UD) | L - Edson Barboza (UD) | W - Eddie Faaloloto (TKO)

How did these two get here?

Danny "Last Call" Castillo is a wrestler and a member of Team Alpha Male with Urijah Faber. He had an up-and-down career in the WEC, going 5-3 in the promotion but losing to top opponents. He surprised many with a win over Joe Stevenson in his UFC debut, but was defeated by superior wrestler Jacob Volkmann in his sophomore effort. He came back to face Shamar Bailey at UFC 139, and picked up the most impressive win over his career with a first-round TKO.

Anthony "The Assassin" Njokauni was a long-time employee of World Extreme Cagefighting, going 4-3 under their banner over two years before being transferred to the UFC. After dropping his first WEC bout to future champion Ben Henderson, he won three straight fights and picked up three straight knockout of the night bonuses along the way. A quick loss to Shane Roller followed up by an embarrassing knockout loss to Maciej Jewtuszko almost ended his run in the promotion, but a win at WEC 52 got him a shot in the UFC. His first fight was a barnburner against Edson Barboza where he dropped a spirited decision but won another fight of the night bonus. He rebounded with a unanimous decision win over Andre Winner at UFC 132.

Why should you care?

As much as I loved the WEC, I'm not sure. This is straight wrestler vs. striker. We'll either get a sick KO or a grinding decision, methinks. Is that worth caring about? That's up to you.
