I'm probably not supposed to get into this kind of analysis in the intro, but fights like this suck for Canadian fans like me. On one side you have a seriously talented Korean judoka with all the potential in the world. On the other side, you have a guy exemplifies the Canadian spirit, but has been stuck with two incredibly tough roadblocks in a row. If Brian Foster didn't get hurt, how different would things be? Dong Hyun Kim (14-1-1, 1 NC, 5-1, 1 NC UFC) faces Sean Pierson (11-5, 1-1 UFC).
Neither fighter is currently ranked at welterweight on the USA Today/BE Consensus Rankings. Kim was sitting at number 20 before he got knocked out by Carlos Condit, and really shouldn't have plummeted off the list like he did. In my opinion, he's a top-25 talent at 170 for sure. Pierson will need some more quality wins on his resume before he gets a sniff. This welterweight UFC 141 fight will be take place on the preliminary card, and will be streamed live on Facebook. The stream begins at approximately 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT.
How do these two stack up?
Kim: 30 years old | 6'1" | 76" reach
Pierson: 35 years old | 6'0" | 76" reach
What have these two done recently?
Kim: L - Carlos Condit (KO) | W - Nate Diaz (UD) | W - Amir Sadollah (UD)
Pierson: L - Jake Ellenberger (KO) | W - Matt Riddle (UD) | W- Ricky Goodall (TKO)
How did these two get here?
Dong Hyun "Stun Gun" Kim entered the UFC in mid-2008 and rattled off two wins before meeting Karo Parisyan at UFC 94. Despite entering the fight as a huge underdog, Kim did enough to make the fight very close, but he dropped a very controversial split-decision. The fight result was changed to a no-contest after Karo tested positive for painkillers. Kim rattled off three more impressive wins in a row after that bout, only to get destroyed by Carlos Condit at UFC 132. The first loss of his career was obviously a major setback. How will he look in his return from such a crushing loss?
Sean Pierson is a wrestler that was a staple of the Canadian MMA scene for many years. He was labeled "Pimp Daddy" by a Quebec promoter in one of his early fights, because the promoter wanted everyone to have a personality. Pierson playfully embraced the persona for a long time, right up until he was finally invited into the UFC. For whatever reason, his job offer as a Toronto police officer was rescinded because he wore sunglasses and a fur coat to the cage, despite them knowing about it for over a year. It didn't matter though. Pierson made the best of his UFC debut and defeated fan favorite Matt Riddle, cementing his place in the promotion. He was scheduled to face Brian Foster at UFC 129, but he was forced out and replaced by the formidable Jake Ellenberger, who knocked out Pierson in the first round. He faces a ridiculously tough opponent in his return to the octagon.
Why should you care?
If you're Canadian or Korean, the reason is obvious. If you're just a regular MMA fan, judo vs. wrestling is always interesting because it can play out in so many different ways. That makes it worth watching.
