Chael Sonnen vs. Mark Munoz Confirmed For UFC on Fox 2
So much for Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen II up next.
The UFC announced Saturday that Sonnen will face Mark Munoz in the co-main event of UFC on Fox 2 in Chicago, IL, on Saturday, January 28th. It will be a no. 1 contender's bout with the winner getting the next shot at Silva.
The announcement also confirmed that Rashad Evans vs. Phil Davis will be the main event and also a No.1 contender's bout for the winner of UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones and Lyoto Machida.
A public press conference is set for this Wednesday at 2 pm EST featuring all four men and UFC President Dana White. Tickets go on sale next Friday for the event, which begins at 8 pm EST on Fox. The broadcast will run for two hours.
Other fights that have reportedly been signed but not yet confirmed include Evan Dunham vs. Paul Sass, Demetrious Johnson vs. Eddie Wineland, Cody McKenzie vs. Michael Johnson and Jon Olav Einemo vs. Mike Russow.
Sonnen (26-11-1) returned to action in October after a year-plug long layoff, submitting Brian Stann in the second round at UFC 136. He fought Silva in August 2010 and had the upper hand for the majority of the fight before getting caught in a triangle choke halfway in the fifth round which he tapped to.
A rematch between the two was believed to be set after Sonnen's recent win, but Silva is still recovering from a shoulder injury and is believed to be held aside for a major outdoor show in Brazil next summer.
Munoz (12-2) got into top contention on his recent four-win streak with recent victories over contenders Demian Maia and Chris Leben. The hard-hitting Munoz is 7-2 in his UFC career and has been petitioning for a shot at Silva since his November win over Leben.

No way broha-
JOE is gonna destroy ‘Fat Cop’ Russow, then dominate Carwin easily to win “Money in the Bank,” which he will cash in for a title shot against Junior Dos Santos and The Undertaker in a 3- way ladder match… losers leave town

Chael by absolute destruction. The biggest problem with middleweight rankings is Munoz being in the top 5. There’s a handful of mid/upper tier fighters that would beat him
That's not a problem with rankings at all.
Rankings are based on objective accomplishments- quantity & quality of wins and losses, giving precedence to recent events. Munoz has definitely earned his rank.

Damn...
I was really hoping that Sonnen would go against the winner of Bisping vs. Miller.
Now I really need Miller to win to shut Bisping up…
Oh god
Chael’s post-fight speech is going to be on national television….

I hope
Bisping or Mayhem wins convincingly tonight and Dana can’t help but give them the next shot.

The UFC better hope Sonnen wins
Silva/Munoz wont do shit on PPV.
No less than any other Silva PPV
by The Burning Scheyer Jersey on Dec 3, 2011 5:55 PM EST up reply actions
Yes it would. Go compare Silva/Sonnen and Silva/Belfort to the Silva/Okami numbers. People want to see Silva/Sonnen 2.
Of course the rematch is the money match
But Silva/Munoz will put up better than “shit” buys. The 134 card was an aberration based on outside influences.

Wouldn’t it probably be Hendo vs Silva if Sonnen lost?!

Better hope not.
Silva just might re-injure his shoulder if that happens.

AS A SILVA FAN I HATE TO AGREE
silva/munoz wont do good on ppv, chael by far will make for a fair draws in sales… but ugh it’s only fair man, 2 legit contenders fighting for A CRACK at the title.. you know all that putting a name (vitor & henderson against silva isnt fair. yea he won both by finishes
but still make the guys earn a crack thats how its supposed to be! but i hope the best man wins, since i dont get a cut of the jackpot but rather adding the sales by purschasing ppv
I got trolled by Chael Sonnen. Why am I not surprised?

sucks
my heart wants Munoz to win, but I still want to see Silva/Chael II, so I hope Chael wins, but I wish there would be a different scenario
I call you, I talk to me - Anderson Silva
this
I hate having to root for Chael, but he and Anderson have unfinished business
Actually Sonnen was finished because when it mattered most silva took care of business

^^THIS^^
I realize I’m in the minority here, but I have no interest in Silva/Sonnen II. Sonnen was already embarrassed. Even with the testosterone of 8 Burt Reynolds, he was unable to defeat the Spider. I’m pulling for Munoz to shut this clown up once & for all …
I mostly want him to to face Silva again to get embarrassed all around
and shut the Silva haters/Sonnen lovers.

Don't like it
I don’t like this fight. They should have waited until after Mayhem v. Bisping, then made a more informed decision.
I live 2 1/2 hours from Chicago, right on the IL/IA border. Which means I must go and see these fights!! HoorayUFC!!

LHW
So, if Davis defeats Evans, that means Phil Davis is getting a title shot before Dan Henderson. Yeah, ok.
this PROVES that Chael Sonnen is certifialby purposely trolling all of us
Cant say I like the guy, but he is a diabolical genius
A genius would have figured how to avoid a triangle choke by now

Funny how the UFC is putting four top wrestlers in the main and co-main spots. I guess they figure there is less chance of a lay-and-pray decision that way.
at dodgerfan 86
u got jokes man i love it!!! (4 top wrestlers) i think they r doing this 2 simply make for good tv, u know the whole gotta win over the mainstream??? whats ur thoughts…
Dammit!
I fell for Chael’s bull!
Now, with that out of the way, I like this card. The guys are very sell-able. And I can’t even imagine what Chael will do/say with cameras following him.
Check out Gals Guide to MMA
Problem is
Sonnen vs Munoz is not nearly as exciting as say Sonnen vs Mayhem. Imagine the lead-up to a fight between 2 of the biggest personalities in MMA. Gold, Jerry, Gold!!
…and I fell for it too.

true true but man lets be clear mayhem is not ready...
he’ll get beat up by sonnen w/ a slim chance to submit him… which in the mma world thats all it takes is a chance, so mayhem could win by tapout but i’d bet against it
chances of sonnen by decision like 85% cause he aint ko’ing nobody cause he ko’ing nobody
chances of mayhem tapping him like 15%
I wonder if Sonnen vs. Munoz will end up a standup fight
Also, can anybody remember a Sonnen fight where he had to stuff a takedown? The Maia fight is the only one that comes to mind.

I remember the Maia fight
He had to stuff a takedown and instead got his ass flip turned upside down.
I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.
And I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there

STAND UP FIGHT - not a chance!!
truth is this fight will take place everywhere, its a matter of who’s the better defensive wrestler, i think sonnens hands are slighty better but munoz hands are more powerful… both simply like to take guys down and gnp them, so whoever has the best grappling defence and better bjj and scrambling ability should win. dont quots em on that cause again this fight is going everywhere and as they “anything can happen”
Hmm
I guess this throws mud all over my 2012 Mayhem title prediction!
