Court McGee vs. Costa Philippou, James Te Huna vs. Aaron Rosa Added to UFC on FX 2 in Australia
The UFC has begun fleshing out the card for their return to Sydney, Australia on March 3rd, which will feature the opening round of the inaugural flyweight tournament. In addition, the promotion has now added a middleweight bout between Court McGee and Constantinos Philippou, while MMA Weekly reports that a light heavyweight contest between James Te Huna and Aaron Rosa will also be on the card.
McGee won the 11th season of The Ultimate fighter by choking out Kris McCray, and has remained undefeated in his UFC career since then. Most recently, "The Crusher" took a unanimous decision over Dongi Yang at UFN 25 in New Orleans. The Matt Serra and Ray Longo-trained Philippou, has put his boxing skills on display in three fights now, with wins in the last two, including a brutal KO of Jared Hamman at UFC 140 last month.
Te Huna is an Australia resident and has only gone to a decision once in his 18-fight career. Although he has sandwiched two wins around a loss, that loss was to rising prospect, Alexander Gustafsson, and the most recent win was a violent knockout against Ricardo Romero back in September. Aaron Rosa was underwhelming in his UFC debut, getting TKOd by Joey Beltran, but after cutting down to his more regular weight of 205 lbs, the Texas native found success with a decision win over Matt Lucas at UFC on Fox 1.
Here's how the UFC on FX 2 card is shaping up:
-Martin Kampmann vs. Thiago Alves
-Ian McCall vs. Demetrious Johnson - flyweight tournament semifinal
-Joseph Benavidez vs. Yasuhiro Urushitani - flyweight tournament semifinal
-Court McGee vs. Constantinos Philippou
-James Te Huna vs. Aaron Rosa

Doubt it
McGee’s not very good but he’s a gamer and doesn’t wade in recklessly like Hamman does. I think he takes it threw patient kickboxing and getting it to the ground.

Well at least we know a better QB would torch your team. Nice effort by Goldson, right?
Don’t worry. We’ll be back.

We've played some pretty good QBs this year. I'm not a fan of Goldson.
Either way, all in good fun my man! I’d be more worried about Pete Carroll saying he’s comfortable with Tarvaris Jackson next season if I were you, though :]

I think so too

So is Philippou a prospect at middleweight? I don’t know much about him, I’ve only seen his last fight
Well, he’s got a growing ground game, but his hands are brutal. The Hamman fight had some vicious striking from Consta. The big thing for him is just that he was still getting comfy inside the octagon. He didn’t seem that confident when he fought Rivera.
I’m just surprised they’re matching him up with Court. Both guys are prospects, but Court’s a little higher on the ladder. I’d rather see Court vs Weidman.

I don’t really consider Court to be anything special at all, I think he’s lower mid tier at best. As far as prospects go, I have Brad Tavares, Weidman, and Ronny Markes at middleweight
So, Court isn’t a prospect but Tavares is? Explain that reasoning.

Hopefully but Mcgee is a bad matchup, wasn’t that long ago Philippou lost to Nick Catone. Hamman was a good style match up for him

Decent fights
It’s a tough matchup for McGee. Ryan Jensen wobbled him and dropped him a few times, and Philippou has some nice power, but I think McGee is resilient enough to win this unless it goes to a decision
I think Rosa probably wins against Te Huna via size
When does Court gas?
He’s got a really good gas tank.

McGee gassed in the Yang fight
And nearly lost it. Yang was just more gassed.

I guarantee Costa won't gas
He’s the type of person that looks at his mistakes and weaknesses and that’s all he thinks about until he has become much better.

Quick poll - If Spike TV had the UFC, would we still be seeing main events like Alves vs. Kampmann
Or actually have McGee vs. Costa as the main event or co-main?
Love love love this FX deal.

Great fight, OK fighters
If Court makes it to the second round he should have this fight in the bag. That said, in his last fight Philippou showed a killer instinct which had previously been lacking. I think this is a good match up of middle of the road middleweights.
This card just went from meh to...
bleh.
Still not wasting my money attending this garbage.

I know right?!
Plus it is live MMA. I am still kicking myself for not going to UFC on Versus 4 this past summer when it was in Pittsburgh

I’ve missed a few opportunities to go to UFC shows, tickets are just expensive for a broke-ass student like me, so that leaves me watching them at local sports bars and mourning the good ol’ cheap ticket SF dayss
Yeah same here
I am a poor grad student. Now all of my free money is going to be going to gym and equipment fees. As well as other costs related to fighting.

Compare UFC 110 and 127 to this event....
And youll quickly begin to realise that other then the alright but not great main event this tournament is full of zero name value fighters who are barely even known by the hardcore fan element let alone the Ian McCalls and whoever that asian dude is.
Rosa is a prospect at best and McGee is the forgotten TUF champ…. Wow.
They may not be awesome fights on paper and could very well turn out to be an awesome card but with a weak main event and a nothing support cast youll be hard pressed to find a casual or hardcore fan willing to shell out $1000+ to attend.
Dont believe me? Check the ticket sales, They soldout in minutes both times previously but right now tickets are readily available weeks after they were initially released.

It isn't a numbered event
Boo fucking hoo
Ruining Your Special Night with all caps and the like. Be prepared to be disappointed. But not by us. Because of us.... We're not disappointing, it's the things we say to you, and.... fuck it, everyone else sucks. Mmkay?
No shit sherlock....
Thats my point.
If the UFC is going to downgrade us from numbered events to Fight Nights and cards of that calibre then dont expect us to break our back attending it because we deserve better and have the records to prove it.
But nice try trolling…. lol

Really intrigued about Court vs. Costa
Just because as a sad TUF enthusiast, it could well have been the TUF 11 Finals if Costa hadn’t been caught in an armbar in the pre-house fights. Silly mistake sure but he was dominating that fight beforehand and could easily have beaten the likes of Yager and McCray had he got in I think.
Question
Seeing Matt Serra’s name above, I’m curious as to what his status is — is he retired now?

Great middleweight match up.
Costa was a beast in his last fight, I see him doing it again.

Yes it does....
Just because it is free doesnt mean its great and that main event gets shit on by any Versus card previously held let alone an international event.
In prospective, It does suck big time.

I am excited to see what Aaron Rosa looks like at 205.
He seemed so doughy at HW, if he’s lean enough to improve his cardio, he could give Te Huna some problems.
I was really bummed when the fight with he and Fabio Maldonado was scratched fro the UFC on VERSUS card that came to DC.
