Thank You Jonathan Snowden
Just wanted to do a quick post to thank Mr. Snowden for all his many contributions to Bloody Elbow and MMA Nation over the past however many years it's been.
At his best Snowden is one of the most knowledgeable and most passionate writers covering MMA. He's also one of the fastest and smoothest writers I've ever worked with. The dude can spit out a story fast and it'll be topical, accurate and very well written.
I can definitely say I learned more from working with Jon than I have with any other writer. Some of the lessons were hard ones but they were all needed.
Let's take a moment to remember Snowden's best work and wish him the best in all his future endeavors. I look forward to following his work. He's got a couple books coming out next year that I look forward to reading very much and I'm sure he'll continue to be uniquely compelling as long as he chooses to write about MMA.
Warning: This isn't the place to bash Snowden. The ban hammer is thirsty. Tread lightly or go away.
The FanPosts are solely the subjective opinions of Bloody Elbow readers and do not necessarily reflect the views of Bloody Elbow editors or staff.

Seriously guys...
this isn’t the time or place to take shots at Jon and stepping over the line WILL result in a ban.
Jon did great work here and helped the site grow a lot so this is a thank you post, not a “what do you REALLY think about him?” post

Seriously though, Snowden was a hell of a writer and no one created a discussion like him. The comments to his stories were some of the most fun things ever. I am looking forward to his new book and I am a fan. Best of luck, Mr. Snowden!

Word up, he could stir shit up like no other, without it seeming blatantly obvious that was his goal.
For those that weren’t as familiar as we are with his devilish style.
Much like Matt Roth tries to do but Snowden’s methods differ from those of Roth only as far as the guardsman’s cut and thrust differ from the manner in which a savage wields his club.
Keep up the good work Jonny Boy.

Snowden was instrumental in helping me find my voice (I’m still finding it) and a big part of why I’m with the SBNation family. Along with Nate, Luke, Brent, and Fagan he supported me this year.

Long story short
I was living in NJ and had a 2 hour commute to and from work. Last train left Penn Station at 1 am. I ended up going to a party and left early for the train. Woke up and made my 7am train and fell asleep. I woke up in a trainyard in Queens. This happened on the way home as well where I woke up in the train yard in Long Branch at 3am. Repeat for 2 more days and then finally I woke up at 5am and just wrote an email quitting. Not giving 2 weeks. Quitting. I was tired of waking up in train yards.

I’ve been so distraught over the news that Jonathan Snowden has resigned from SBNation that I find myself wandering aimlessley in the wee hours, only to wake up in a trainyard. I’m so sick of it. Last night a few bums rolled me and acted like I just ate their strawberries, but, I am no Michael Bisping. I think my ass kicking has exposed GSP, because I truly believe he is me. I’ve pulled myself out, because this morning I woke up in a trainyard (for the last time) the dregs circling me, I stood up and screamed LET’S MUTHERFUKERS, and they all scattered. I really liked Snowden’s articles. Even if I didn’t agree with some of his opinion pieces I was always intrigued to see how Jon could spin his angle. Jon didn’t always pick the popular opinion, but he always backed it up. Good luck Jon. I hope this will allow you to post in the comment section at BE a little more.

Realest talk I can give about Jon is this…
He and I had a shitload of arguments and times where I thought he was the world’s biggest asshole. Before the first time I met him (Fedor vs. Rogers) I was sure I was going to just HATE him, but he turned out to be a really nice guy. We weren’t working together at the time but it was nice to talk to him and see that he wasn’t a psycho or anything. Then we started working together and argued with some degree of frequency.
But in the end it’s because Jon is passionate about MMA and what he writes is really what he thinks. I can promise you that he would argue the same points that people thought he was making just to be a shit-stirrer behind the scenes with me or anyone. I mean, he gained nothing from arguing his point to me online out of public, but he’d do it because he believed what he wrote.
And he’s actually a hell of a decent guy once you get to know him a little bit.

Snowden is my favorite MMA writer, hands down. I know a lot of people dislike him, but I usually found myself agreeing with his opinions on MMA, even his most “controversial” articles. And that’s important, I don’t have any patience to read opinion pieces and that kind of thing by writers whose opinions I despise, no matter how well written or well respected they may be.
Not only does his take on things suit me well, he’s also in general a really great writer, journalist, and author. “Total MMA” is a must buy, great summary of the history of MMA. I haven’t picked up the encyclopedia yet because I’m not as interested in that format, but I’m definitely looking forward to the next one.
Anyway, thanks for your work around here J-Snow, hope you don’t give up on MMA journalism completely.

Well, what I meant is, I’m not really sold of the general idea of an “MMA Encyclopedia”, especially in this internet age. Personally I would prefer a more traditional chunk of book, read a story from beginning to end, if you get what I’m saying.

Pretty impressive gentlemen.
For whatever reason, the decision has been made that I will not just be leaving SBNation but also the community, even as a commenter. So, while I won’t be able to respond to your comments here, I will be happy to hear from you on twitter @mmaencyclopedia and via email. Hit me up. And, of course, I hope to see you at my next stop, mid January 2012. Look forward to picking the conversation right back up.

BTW, its really a bit sad and unfair that you have to leave BE/Nation totally, whats that about? It always had a certain cache to see your name in the comments section here on BE, you will be missed.
This re-engineering of the site’s writing / attitudinal profile (Fagan out, Snowden out of the community) is really a bit pathetic, is it about ‘mainstreamising’ SBNation sites (post MMA fighting)…
Either way, always leave on a high, so thanks for your contributions and well done on your prolific quality output.
Take care.

No BS here. Snowden spent more time trying to improve my writing (you know, back when I used to write about MMA) than anyone else at SBN, and with approximately zero incentive to do so. He let me weasel my way onto BE Radio. He said horrible, awful things about me in public.

I’m not sure if it played a factor in Jonathan’s decision or not, but being moved from BE to MMA Nation probably didn’t help. There’s just no community over at MMA Nation, most articles have 0 comments. I know Jonathan enjoyed the back and forth between him and the hundreds of commenters every one of his posts brought out. There was none of that over at MMA Nation. It’s also one of the reasons I don’t like going to that site, that and the horrible, unorganized layout. BE FOREVER!
Does anyone know if he’ll be taking another position as an MMA writer?
Snowden’s exceptional pieces on MMA history always defined him in my mind, so I never really saw him as “the controversial guy.” I also like articles I disagree with. His writing will be sorely missed.

Snowden...
is an odd sort of writer, in that he completely infuriates you not because he’s an idiot, but because he obviously is highly intelligent yet still disagrees with you in what appear to be highly questionable ways. They say that writing that manages to provoke a response from its readers is the best possible writing, and it seems I like many others here agree. You managed to make some fairly dry subjects very readable, and take some otherwise worn out topics and take the devils advocate side convincingly even if you didn’t believe it yourself. Bravo, and best wishes.
P.S.: For those flipping out, he likely accepted a higher paying/more prestigious position elsewhere, and either their corporate policy or the higher ups of SB Nation have some weird idea of non-compete.
