Gilbert Melendez, Gegard Mousasi Top Lightly-Attended Strikeforce Event Payouts

Gilbert Melendez made $150,000 last Saturday in his Strikeforce win over Jorge Masvidal. (Photo: Showtime)

Strikeforce Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez and former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi each made $150,000 for their efforts last Saturday at the promotion's event in San Diego, each nearly topping what the show generated in ticket sales.

The California State Athletic Commission released the numbers for the entire show Tuesday and MMA Fighting reported on them, revealing a paltry attendance of 2995 and a final gate at $154,075.

From high to low, here's the breakdown of who earned what Saturday. Like always, these don't include discretionary bonuses given by Zuffa:

Moose has said in the past that he wanted to retire before 30, and damn, he might be able to do so comfortably at this rate.

by lolumad on Dec 21, 2011 2:12 PM EST reply actions

Makes you wonder

What’s he spending all this money on? If he did spend it towards higher level training it’d pay off in the long run. Or does dude just have debt for days we don’t know about? Also, War Sauce!

he prob just has a swimming pool full of money

and is willing to ride it out fighting people not as good as him

not a bad call really, getting punched in the face hurts

Depending on where he's planning on retiring. 150K is a lot for a fight but not a lot for your future. Think about all his expenses and then also think about taxes.

Fighters are independent contractors. Taxes will eat up a good chunk of it. He’ll get paid like a really good surgeon every year as long as he fights well. Long term when he starts to lose hell make less and less and eventually be broke unless he manages his money well. Basically fighting and making that kind of money is like getting a ton of money up front then getting little money later on in life. Also i dont lump into this category people like GSP, Brock, Anderson etc. Those fighters will have long term wealth from fighting, sponsors, commercials and wrestling.

Taxes indeed.

It’s interesting he didn’t work out a deal with Zuffa like other foreign fighters. I’m not exactly sure how it works, but I’ve seen some incredibly small disclosed purses for foreign fighters, and it was explained that it was for tax reasons, and that the bulk of their pay was not in disclosed salary. Wish I could remember the source…

by Machiel Van on Dec 21, 2011 2:32 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah that happened a lot in Strikeforce. Zuffa is definitely trying to show how its all legit, no tax evasion issues here

Marloes Coenen I believe was one example where she was paid like 2k and everyone went crazy saying how cheap SF was.

True, but he gets basically all of the money not lost to taxes, there’s no camp for him to pay. Fight two or three times a year making sums like that, plus additional k-1 fights in Japan, and you could retire with a lesser job as a trainer or somesuch pretty early on.

by lolumad on Dec 21, 2011 3:31 PM EST up reply actions

What do you think the odds are that he’s seen money for his K-1 fights?

He keeps going back, you have to think he’s getting some return for it. Mousasi doesn’t seem like the type to fight for the sake of fighting, he wants $.

K-1 ain't payin lol. DREAM eh i dunno. He has had camps before. He is a red devil fighter and has trained with GG i believe. He right now has 1 trainer and thats about all.

It all adds up. We see that number and to us it may seem like a lot. I figure hes making about 200k a year when all is said and done.

Hard to say if they do or not.

It’s a $580,000 payroll against $154,075 in gate revenue. Their TV deal was only paying around $8.3 million per year (http://mmapayout.com/2011/02/business-journal-strikeforce-makes-millions-on-mixed-martial-arts/), and the amount was supposedly decreased in the new deal (probably due to the reduced number of events called for by the new contract). They ran 16 shows in 2011, so that would amount to $518,750 per show. 8 of those shows were “Challengers” events, which have extremely low payrolls, but also abysmal gates. Basically, Strikeforce receives revenue from license fees, site fees for events, and tickets. They spend money on fighter payrolls, production, marketing, and salaries for employees. I’m guessing it’s run in a way that turns a very small profit. It’d be hard to imagine Zuffa would’ve pushed for a new deal if it the organization lost money on each event. Overall, I’m sure that Strikeforce lost money this year, due to Fedor and Dan Henderson’s salaries. I still don’t understand why Lorenzo of all people negotiated such huge salaries for Fedor vs Henderson.

I forgot about sponsorship money (and now fees for sponsorship access).

Which isnt too bad considering most people’s worst night ever usually happens after spending $100 at the bars.

Wait wait wait

Didn’t Croker say the new deal with Cyborg made her the highest paid female athlete. GTFO 1 fight maybe 2 a year and pulling in 63k per fight. Chicks in the WNBA making more than that a year.

Oh and someone needs to upload a getting Anderson Silva money gif in this thread somewhere.

Well Played

I knew that was going to be the argument for my post. Still seems sad to be the Best woman fighter in the world and make some sad money when you are finishing everyone inside a round.(queue the “But shes a man jokes”)

Ok we need a Cyborg VS The World

Bring people in and she’ll just knock them down I’m thinking 10 fights or so in a night make her break a sweat.

by Josh Ttocs on Dec 21, 2011 2:45 PM EST up reply actions

She doesn't get paid for her abilities and standing

She gets paid for how much money SF thinks she will bring in by being on the card. Same goes for all fighters in the industry. And while this is simplified, it is fundamentally true.

…chump change to the ufc but still they are making money

by Green Naugahyde on Dec 21, 2011 2:56 PM EST reply actions

See above. Also, Spike was paying the UFC $35 million per year, so $30 million in TV rights would not have been “chump change” to them. (http://mmapayout.com/2011/08/ufc-signs-tv-deal-with-fox/)

by Machiel Van on Dec 21, 2011 2:59 PM EST up reply actions

Mousasi still getting payed.. it sort of makes you understand why he’s not as serious as he could be about training and such. Just train for a weeks with your buddies, show up, fight an easy opponent, and bank $150 000… sounds like a pretty comfortable lifestyle to me.

However, I think he realizes that once this contract is up he’s going to have to take a significant decrease in pay unless he turns things up. Maybe become champion again, train a little harder and become a legit top ten fighter that people are excited to see fight. I hope so, anyway. Still a fan.

by Horselover Fat on Dec 21, 2011 3:08 PM EST reply actions

train for a few weeks*

by Horselover Fat on Dec 21, 2011 3:09 PM EST up reply actions

Mousasi seems like a smart guy, he has to know the gravy train will come to a halt eventually. His striking is awesome, imagine what a camp like tristar would turn him into.

Enjoy it while you can, Strikeforce fighters

Soon enough, you will never again be paid like this.
