Video: Shinya Aoki Trains For His Title Defense Against Satoru Kitaoka at DREAM: New Year 2011!
To prepare himself against his long time friend and training partner, Aoki held his camp once again in Singapore. The video shows an interview and footage of him working with Ryo Chonan, and the Muay Thai and BJJ champs from Evolve MMA.
In case you missed it before, check out my photo gallery of Shinya Aoki training at the Evolve MMA gym.

Watching Shinya Aoki doing Muay Thai training
Is almost as painful as watching Jake Shields doing Muay Thai training.

To be fair, Shinya looks much better.
Shields looks like a freaking robot.

For sure, Aoki’s standup has improved a lot and he’ll be able to stand at least long enough to implement his style of fighting against most fighters. Personally, though, I feel like he should focus less on skill training and instead, focus primarily on athleticism/strength and conditioning.
In other words, he needs to bulk up, pick up some free weights, and possibly consider joining a wrestler powerhouse camp. If he could turn himself into an Asian Gleison Tibau, he’d be unstoppable.

to be honest, I think the most important thing he gets from Evolve,
is being able to train with BJJ world champions, guys who are better than him… Even if he improves on his Muay Thai, he will ALWAYS be a grappler first, and training with those dudes will only sharpen his primary skill, making him even more dangerous.
Definitely better than training he gets in Japan.
Also, the video also shows him focusing on S&C.

His primary skills are, in my opinion, already unparalleled in his weight division. Unfortunately, having just those skills will never be enough for him to reach the very top echelons of MMA. He needs to be more well-rounded and I don’t believe that training at Evolve will help him reach that point. His striking, at least on the tape, still looks mediocre and he looks the same, physique-wise. I think the best route is to either join a wrestler powerhouse team or step up the S&C. That video shows a bit of conditioning but you can’t seriously call that strength training. Let’s see some Olympic lifts, some power lifts, jeez, even some weighted squats.

Remember, Aoki is a large LW, he's 6'3.
And already cuts a lot of weight… and you made the conclusion that he doesn’t do enough S&C just cause the video editor decided to focus on the interview and the other factors such as training his muay thai?
Also, a powerhouse wrestling camp? Easier said than done. There aren’t any of those in Asia, and those in the states probably wouldn’t have the same quality of coaches for the other disciplines… Training with the best BJJ and Muay Thai fighters in the world isn’t going to help him? If you would see the facilities and coaches there, you’d understand that he’s already getting the best training possible in the region. You also have to understand that this guy is from Japan. He has been a Japan-first guy for yearssss, and he even hesitated before eventually moving to Evolve for camps while his wife and his new born stays in Japan.
Also, his grappling is great, but if he turns into a Demian Maia, who doesn’t submit people as often anymore, he’s going to lose often, and lose really bad. Sharpening his already dangerous base, while also working on his weaknesses is just going to help him.

Oh, and...
I think Evolve is already getting a champion wrestler(s?) to add to their team. If they do get multiple quality wrestling champions, which I think this is already close to a done deal, (on paper at least), they’ll have the best coaches in the region, and probably comparable to the best in the world in terms of those individual disciplines.

I’m truly disappointed in you Anton, here. You’ve managed to miss the point in both of my posts. In any case, I’ll reiterate my points and address each of yours succintly.
Remember, Aoki is a large LW, he’s 6’3. And already cuts a lot of weight and you made the conclusion that he doesn’t do enough S&C just cause the video editor decided to focus on the interview and the other factors such as training his muay thai?
First of all, Aoki is not 6’3. He is 5’11 and though, he has a fairly large frame, he cuts nowhere near the amount of weight that many of the top LWs do. However, that is besides one of my larger points, which has been a focus on his S&C. Note: I never said he “doesn’t do enough S&C” like you’re erroneously stating, I’m saying that his S&C focus should be placed more on athleticism/strength purposes. I have viewed a number of Evolve MMA video blogs and I’ve yet to see any proper powerlifting routines. The fact that his physique has remained the same also makes me believe that he hasn’t undertaken that routine either.
…in the region. Listen, I know for a fact that Evolve MMA is a fantastic gym with excellent facilities and trainers but Aoki is a grappler and will always remain a grappler. Think of Jake Shields. Shields trains with some of the best strikers but has his striking improved any? Not so much. The same applies for Aoki, he can train with the most beastly Muay Thai champions ever, but, as we see here, his striking will only improve at a incremental scale. The best thing for Aoki would be to sharpen his already dangerous grappling base (just as you said) with fantastic wrestling. We’ve already seen what happens when Aoki gets top position…scary things happen.
You also have to understand that this guy is from Japan. He has been a Japan-first guy for yearssss, and he even hesitated before eventually moving to Evolve for camps while his wife and his new born stays in Japan.
I don’t care about this. If he truly wants to be the best LW in the world, like he so often states, you need to make sacrifices. Period. Many of the top fighters train outside their comfort zones, train in different places all the time. This has no relevance.
I think Evolve is already getting a champion wrestler(s?) to add to their team. If they do get multiple quality wrestling champions, which I think this is already close to a done deal, (on paper at least)
They’ve been saying this for awhile. I’m still waiting for those champion wrestlers to show up. If they do show up, I’m still not sure that will be enough. As you can me both know, MMA wrestling and amateur wrestling are two completely different beasts.
"Referees, be sure to step in and stop the fight on time tomorrow, because I might get carried away in the moment and my many punches may end up destroying my opponent." - Tatsuya "CRUSHER" Kawajiri
it doesn't matter if you care or not.
but that’s the truth. He’s already doing all that, making sacrifices, training outside of his comfort zone, and training out of Japan. He just feels that Evolve is the best place to do it, and you disagree with him.
He told me that growing up, those Muay Thai legends have always been his idols. Us being fans of MMA in the states will obviously put a huge emphasis on wrestling, but I really wouldn’t fault him for thinking that Evolve is the best place for him to get the best coaching… And yes, I agree that wrestling is still their weak point.
Not sure about the S&C though, as there are different schools of thoughts on what regimen is best for MMA, and if powerlifting is helpful or not. (that’s a different debate, and either way, that’s the sort of thing that he can or can’t do at any gym, so it’s kinda pointless to argue on this)
.
And my bad on the height, got his height mixed up with Zoro’s (the bjj champ who he regularly rolls with). Now that I think about it, Aoki seemed like the same height as me when I met him. I’m a hair below 6 feet.
…As for the champion wrestlers, I heard they’re getting them soon. Not sure about what you’re talking about when you said “saying this for a while”… cause what they’ve been saying for a while now is “please help us get wrestlers”.

Aoki is learning English and Muay Thai?
It looks like he is gearing up for something big in 2012.
This dude
Needs to get into the ufc. Watching him on the ground is like watching Anderson on the feet. People like to take the fight with Melendez as Aoki doesn’t belong. I saw it as Melendez putting on one hell of a game plan against a dangerous opponent. If Aoki can tighten up his defense standing he should do just fine.
