Photo

The UFC is finally returning to the Land of the Rising Sun. After an eleven year absence from Japan, they will re-emerge on the scene with UFC 144 on February 25th in the Saitama Super Arena. Along with that, there will be a plethora of fights featuring the best Japanese fighters in the UFC. Yoshihiro Akiyama will make his welterweight debut against Jake Shields, Hatsu Hioki will continue his march to a featherweight title shot when he takes on Bart Palaszewski, and much more. I think he has a decent shot against shields.

I don’t think anyone has ever taken sexy down, and he has good hands and power.

Meh...

I know Shields has skills, but I’m less than impressed with him thus far in the big show. It wouldn’t surprise me to have Sexy T/KO him… he’s got big power, great chin & decent ground game. Jake just looks… sloppy, to me.

Worst case scenario is Shields gets owned on the feet for a 4th straight fight

Best case scenario is Sexwagon gasses and Shields does his thing and gets a submission.

If the fight stays standing, Shields gets owned, no matter the opponent.

It’s hard to have awful striking when you train with Gilbert Melendez and the Diaz brothers, but Shields somehow manages it.

It amazes me that after a decade or so of MMA training, Shields still hasn’t learned to throw anything other than weak arm punches. His kicks are pretty terrible as well, it’s like he has no movement in his core.

by lolumad on Dec 20, 2011 11:31 PM EST up reply actions

Honestly, I'd be stoked if Shields got a knee in the face on a TD.

His double-leg is so horribly telegraphed when he’s in desperation mode. Just hit him in the face solidly once and BAM — out stretches the arms and down goes his unprotected head. So annoying.

He certainly didn’t try that against GSP. After Ellenberger I’m not sure he will against anybody, but it’s not like standing and exchanging is an option either. I could see him being a changed fighter after that KO though.

there's no comparison.

There’s one chinese fighter in the UFC (he also happens to be the first). This is the first UFC event in Asia since the last UFC Japan, which was 15 years ago.

Completely different.

Is really not going to be competitive. Unless G-Sot’s striking defense has gotten so bad I think he probably outstrikes Gomi and then insta-subs him.

But his offensive wrestling is shit is the problem.

If Gomi is even halfway taking this seriously (which, of course, is the big question mark) he should win because he can stay on the feet and Sot isn’t nearly good enough to strike with Gomi.

You can't blame his the excitement around Sot last year on "UFC Hype"

He was on a seven fight win streak against increasing competition with 5 of them by finish. There was definitely good reason to talk about him as a contender and losses to Siver and Dos Anjos don’t change that.

Sot has decent offensive striking, but he's probably the least athletic person on the UFC roster.

He’s been cursed with the body of a 70 year old man, and really doesn’t move spectacularly well. Gomi, on the other hand, still packs decent speed and crazy power, even in his current faded state.

I’m guessing Gomi eats a considerable number of jabs, wards off G-sot’s weak takedown attempts, and serves up a scary one punch KO near the end of the first round.

Yeah, I have trouble getting behind Gomi, considering his lackluster run in the UFC thusfar

But he definitely stands a decent shot here. If he can keep Sot from dragging him to the ground, he should have 15 mins to shoot from the hips and hope to land. Gsot is definitely hittable and his chin is at least a little suspect following the dos Anjos loss and getting rocked late against Pellegrino.

My only point above was to nix the idea that there wasn’t good reason for the excitement behind GSot this time last year when he was coming off the win over Lauzon.

I like Sotiropoulos against most fighters without serious power striking.

He’s got some very good straight punches, and is quite wily on the ground if he can drag his opponent there.

I think he loses to just about every wrestleboxer in the WW division.

It seems to be the easy route right?

So why does he stay at welterweight? He beat Okami once (in an odd fight) and Dan Henderson (still don’t get that fight). Odds are he’d do better there.

Yet he’d rather cut weight and do terribly in the ufc welterweight division… makes no sense. :)

Yeah.

Fedor was rather lethargic, as if he didn’ really believe what was happening to him; but when the Americanas kicked in, you could tell he thought “I has a mad,” and then just trounced Hunt, throwing him around, hitting him some, throwing him around again, and then pulling off the most stoic, bored-looking armbar ever.

The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.

by Unabomberman on Dec 20, 2011 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah

He seemed to get pretty lazy after Hunt stepped over on the armbar attempt. Basically looked like he just thought Hunt couldn’t do anything to him until he tried to crank the americana. The way he got up just determined to get a throw and a finish was awesome tho. And topped it off with a key lock just to show him how it’s done.

well the homegrown talent on the card is enough of an attempt along with all the deals they’ve made and are making in Japan for the card itself along with the promotion for it.
