good point...

But didn’t you guys hype Machida up as a guy to beat Jones?
Picking him to win and so forth?

I thought he would be a good test for Jon. After that first round, I thought the entire fight was going to play out that way. Jones adjusted, and won. It was a great display of fight smarts.

The way Jon won made sense. Get the clinch, keep it a grappling/ground contest. Had he stayed at range he would have lost the fight, which would be the prime way for Machida to win.

Hell no.

Did you not notice that after talking it over with his corner, Jones won all the exchanges in the second? That the finishing sequence started on the feet with both fighters going for a left, but Jones coming out on top because he landed flush AND blocked Machida’s strike?

Grappling got Jones the finish, but striking adjustments won Jones the fight.

Anderson Silva.

I think Silva is the most accomplished fighter in UFC history. But right now, in December 2011, Jones is the best.

anderson is 14-0 in ufc with 8 title defenses and has been the mw champ before jon even debuted in mma and his last legit loss happened while jon was still in highschool

i know jones is popular atm but damn have some sense

I think Anderson being a champ before Jon debuted plays to Jon, actually.

It’s absolutely batshit how fast he’s risen to being the #2, or arguably #1 fighter in the world.

I'd put Edgar ahead of Jones. GSP too.

Edgar could easily move to 145 and be champ, and GSP is riding 6 title defenses.

No way in hell Edgar's in front of Jones.

Three defenses, with one being a draw, for Edgar, in not NEAR as dominating of fashion against a lesser calibre of opponent (I’d rank Machida, Rampage, and Rua above Maynard and BJ P4P, personally) doesn’t cut it. And with GSP’s inactivity and presumed continued inactivity combined with his last bout being underwhelming, I can no longer say he’s a better fighter than Jones. But in all reality, P4P is total bullshit, so I’m not gonna get my panties in a bunch over it.

edgar is above jones

because he is one of the smallest guys at LW he is a natural FW fighting bigger guys and winning

jones plays with children

That's just kooky

With the possible exception of the first round last night, Jones has barely lost a round in the UFC. He’s finished virtually everyone he’s fought including a run of former champions at the highest level. Frankie is 1-1-1 against Gray Maynard, and should be 1-1 against BJ Penn. I love Frankie and he’s been great lately, but there’s a reason we don’t have 400-comment debates on “who can beat Frankie Edgar”.

Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.

He makes the case pretty well for a short article, except this line:

There is no way a fighter like Jake Shields intimidates Jones the way the former Strikeforce star scared St. Pierre.
Seriously? Snowden is one of those “GSP is scurred” lame-o’s? He couldn’t just say GSP hasn’t finished in a while to make his case?

He's a Diaz fan.

I don’t personally think “finishing” is that important. A fighter who dominates five rounds is still doing a heck of a job. I’m also a huge fan of GSP – but he was extraordinarily cautious against Shields.

You mean after his vision was going? Of course he was a bit cautious. He was probably wondering if one more punch to the eye would be the end of his career.

Even then, from striiking distance he threw 89 power strikes, and 70 to Jake’s head. That’s more than any other fight of his on Fightmetric, including the Fitch fight, believe it or not.

The Shields fight has been ridiculously distorted in everyone’s minds. People say that GSP was whiffing that overhand all night, when he landed head power strikes at 40% in the first two rounds. Silva did worse against Maia and Sonnen, and Cain only did slightly better against the man with the worst striking defense of any top 10 fighter in any division. People say GSP wasn’t aggressive enough when he initiated 90% of the exchanges. Now you say he was scared of Shields when he let himself loose and threw more power strikes than probably any other fight of his.

Nothing GSP does gets any respect from people like you. He throws power, he’s scared. He throws for accuracy, he’s scared. He takes it to the ground, he’s scared. Give me a break…
