honestly

one or both of them needs to pose in Playboy and then the fight will be marketable. Until that happens, it will not draw outside the hardcores if that.

I’m not saying thats the way it should be, but thats the only way the fight gets the attention of the casuals. Ok, I’ll tone it down. Loser poses for Playboy.

Cyborg? Really?

clearly, it was a joke...

Anyone with taste would pay NOT to see those 3 women naked.

yeah...

She looks nice in a dress. I couldn’t think of another WMMA fighter off of the top of my head so I used her name.

I’ll stop now before this gets ugly.

The article is spot on

in that Rousey has not proven to be a draw. BUT i would say that the crappy view rates for Strikeforce is more due to everyone thinking it’s on it’s death bed than anything else.

by squaresphere on Dec 1, 2011 1:09 PM EST reply actions

It doesn’t help that Rousey’s only fought on Strikeforce Challengers, and none of the big Strikeforce shows.

I honestly think that if they want to build a fanbase they need to go the Lingerie Football League route and use their looks to their advantage. It started as a gimmick during a superbowl halftime show but is not a fairly serious womens football league.

They don’t get taken as seriously because they still have to hold onto the lingerie aspect but their fanbase is getting bigger. The longer they say profitable the better chance they have of evolving into an established and serous pro womens league. There has even been an increased response from parents of girls that want to play women’s pro football to know if there are any women’s programs they should join so they can one day try out for the LFL.

I think in this market that WMMA promoters may need to take advantage of the sex appeal of their fighters when they can. I am not saying they should go all out and be raunchy or fight in lingerie but just stop trying to pretend that some of these women happen to be attractive. Some fans will at least start watching because of that. There are several women fans of MMA that started watching because they thought some of the popular guy fighters were good looking. After watching enough they get educated more on the sport and learn to be a fan for the sport not just to watch a hot guy with his shirt off.

Sexiness as gateway drug for WMMA?

Sexist much? Also, you’re totally kinda right—it would work if given enough of a push. But I dunno, I think it can still somewhat succeed the way it is going, assuming Bellator keeps rolling steadily.

I wouldn’t say that I am a sexist more just a realist. It doesn’t all have to be about their looks but part of the whole package. There have been plenty of male fighters in fitness and other magazines that profile their looks so it is not exactly one sided.

Snowden makes totally fine downer points.

Rousey is not hot shit right now to the proverbial casual fan.

The man makes a point.

The larger question is “Is there money in women’s MMA, period?”

If the answer is no, then maybe Dana White’s point that women’s MMA isn’t “there”, yet.

That then begs another question, will WMMA ever be marketable or will it just be a failed experiment?

by Steve W on Dec 1, 2011 4:12 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I think the answer is easy. Name a woman’s sport that is popular in the US. They target a particular market (guessing off the top of my head) 12-18 year old girls who are into athletics and the parents who take them. Now when we take WMMA, it largely draws a male audience, the market just isnt there.

Tennis

And I think the things that make it popular – it’s an individual sport that allows for personality – are present in MMA too.

Give RR a Louis Bum of the Month Campaign

I would rather see SF give RR a Bum of the Month run ala Joe Louis
gather up all the would-be contendors at 135-145 that they can
from the USA and World
and let
RR run through them at her own blistering pace
then with 5-10 wins added to her record
and another 6 months to a year of exposure
let her wipe up the mat with Carano
then Tate
and finally face Cyborg
