Your Weekend in Combat Sports (November 11-13)

I never say Rest in Peace.  That's too eerie, too spooky, and I don't like seeing R.I.P. on someone's grave.  On my grandfather's grave, I made sure it didn't say RIP.  It just salutes a WWII veteran.  I prefer Rest Easy.  Nothing religious, nothing spiritual, just a hope that wherever you are, whatever you're free from, I hope you rest easy.

That being said, Rest Easy, Joe Frazier.  One of the most underrated athletes in history.  Like I said on Twitter, who would have thought Ali would outlast Smokin' Joe?

Joe was a proud man right to the very end.  Rest easy, Joe.  Hopefully Philadelphia finally gets its act together and honors a man who truly deserves it.

Best Viewing Options: FUCKITIFCROSBY'SBACKTHISWEEKYOUCANFUCKYOURSELVESMMAIMWATCHINGALLSIDALLDAYLETSGOPENSOMGOMG!!1!1!11!!

1. UFC on Fox: Even though I think the UFC/FOX is botching this from the get-go, I am curious to see what kind of changes in production, motif, or patterns that the UFC will undergo with the Fox banner.  Also, and I don't know how, but lost in all the hullaballo, the Bendo/Guida drama, the Spike counter-programming slapfight, and the overall mystery of the look and feel of it, is the fact that we're about to see fucking Cain vs. fucking JDS for the strap!  The marketing for the fight itself has taken a backseat for the marketing of the UFC premiering on Fox.  With Dana at the helm, we shouldn't be surprised.

2. Juan Manuel Marquez vs. Manny Pacquiao: I'm such a sucker for fight hype.  I start off thinking the favorite will have a cakewalk and by fight night I'm lathered up into an underdog frenzy.  Not this time.  JMM is well out of his element and out of his game at this weight.  The higher Marquez goes up in weight, the worse he looks.  He'll keep it feisty, but will be outclassed thoroughly and religiously by Manny.  The undercard is rather pedestrian, too.  It's a shame Joel Casamayor wasn't fighting on ProElite, he would have made Arlovski and Sylvia look downright spry.  He's three and a half years past his expiration date and is fighting the best at 140 in the world.

3. Bellator 57: Another Middleweight tournament about to wrap up, another lack of Bryan Baker fighting for the title.  Honestly, the only Bellator regular at MW who I think would have a chance against Lombard.  Also....LETS MUTHERFUKERS!

4. 24/7 Pacquiao vs. Marquez: The last installments of the series.  Gotta hand it to HBO, they've done a pretty damned great job of marketing and building this fight.

5. Inside MMA: Alvarez is always money on Inside MMA.  Watch Monson...I don't know...occupy something.

6. Best of HDNet Fights: Three-year retrospective on a shitload of MMA and Kickboxing bouts.  I'll take it.

7. Diego Magdaleno vs. Emmanuel Lucero: This is an absolutely fantastic free-cable fight.  Magdaleno is the best fighter to fight live on FSN in months, probably since Mike Alvarado.  He's a top-tier Super Featherweight and a win here propels him, most likely, to the Orient to face either Takashi Uchiyama or Takahiro Ao for a belt.

8. Austin Trout vs. Frank LoPorter/Gabriel Rosado vs. Jonathan Gonzalez: Trout is the draw here.  It's for the WBA Light Middleweight Championship, but Trout is expected to roll LoPorter.  The reason HBO is airing this is because Trout was mentioned as a possibly opponent for Saul Alvarez, so I'm thinking this is a showcase fight.  But either way, you get a Top-10 154lb fighter in action.

9. Evolution Fighting Championships 8: FREE MMA!

10. Face-Off Cotto vs. Margarito: Not a moment too soon, just as Pac-Marquez is ending, Margarito and Cotto is on the way!  No rest for the weary, kids!

BV Loses You Money:  Look above to "Under the Radar".  There's a goddamned fighter named WANDERSON SILVA!  That seems like a create-a-fighter you fight online made me a 13-year-old kid.  Wanderson Silva?  Are you kidding me?  "JOE, FEARLESS IS THIS 195LB FORMER PRIDE STRIKER, FRESH FROM CHUTEHOUSE, IS THE AXE SPIDER!"

Last Weekend's Hangover:
If you put down $100 on each of my predictions last week, you'd have today:
$344
BV Lost You: $156!
On the Year: -$854

This Weekend:

Manny Pacquiao -850 Juan Manuel Marquez
+105 Over 10.5 Rounds Pacquiao vs. Marquez
Cain Velasquez -150 Junior dos Santos
Tyson Fury -1600 Neven Pajkic
Breidis Prescott +400 Mike Alvarado

Take a Knee: Even the biggest combat sports fan needs to recharge their batteries before diving back in.  Here are five games to keep those juices a-flowin until fight time.  Here are five games that are nationally broadcasted this weekend that deserve your eyes as well on Friday and Saturday.

(Note: I'll be excluding my teams from this to avoid homerism and only including nationally broadcasted games.)

New Jersey vs. Washington (Friday, 7:00, NHL Network, CSN, MSG Plus): The Brodeur retirement train is pulling into the home station.....

Washington vs. New Jersey
(Saturday, 7:00, NHL Network): ....and leaving for Washington!

Florida State vs. Miami (Saturday 3:30, ABC/ESPN/ESPN3) Even if the game doesn't mean dick, it's still Miami-FSU.  Sean Taylor was the greatest college defender I've ever had the pleasure to watch in person.  YouTube some of his games against FSU.  You will see a safety singlehandedly winning games against a powerhouse.  Taylor always brought his best against Florida State.  Get ready for lots of talk of missed field goals.

Stanford vs. Oregon (Saturday 8:00, ABC) Alright Oregon, you pride yourself on speed and reaction time.  Good Luck (cheesy pun intended).

Boise State vs. TCU (Saturday 3:30, Versus) Boise faces its biggest test of the remaining year.  TCU is a dynamite program, and if Boise takes this game, I don't see how they don't end up undefeated and FINALLY get a shot at the crown if everything breaks their way.  This week is their last major hurdle.

Your YouTube Finale: Alright, maybe I'm just getting too worked up about Sidney Crosby (possibly) returning this week, but I think this is poignant.  CBC (A Canadian network) always puts together fantastic packages, but their crown jewel is what they put together after every Stanley Cup final.  They recap the entire playoffs.  I've watched every one dozens of times, but their best-made one, in my opinion, was in 2009.  Yes, yes, that's when Pittsburgh won the Cup, but even if they didn't, even if they would have lost to Detroit again, I would have still thought it was fantastic.  "Sleeping Sickness" from City and Colour was the perfect song.  It's just videomaking at its best and you don't even need to be a hockey fan to enjoy it.
