After defeating Brian Stann, Chael Sonnen issued a challenge to Anderson Silva. He brazenly threw down the gauntlet to the champ. Clearly, Sonnen is the number one contender, having smashed Silva, himself, for four and a half rounds before succumbing to a Hail Mary triangle by Silva and a defeat of a top ranked opponent. It's a difficult stylistic match-up for the champ because of Sonnen's relentless takedowns and top control.
After defeating BJ Penn, Nick Diaz issues a challenge to Georges St-Pierre. He brazenly threw down the gauntlet to the champ. Clearly, Diaz is the number one contender, the former Strikeforce champion as well as having just defeated a top ranked opponent. It's a difficult stylistic match-up for the champ because of Diaz's relentless aggression and furious pace.
Anderson Silva and his camp hemmed and hawed. They said that, despite almost beating Silva and despite defeating a top ranked champion, that Sonnen needs to go to the back of some non-existent line.
St-Pierre threw Carlos Condit under the bus and by the end morning of the next day the UFC was making GSP-Diaz happen.
I think this is an interesting comparison.
