Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey Debate Pros and Cons of Possible Fight

Photo

Ronda Rousey has sparked a lot of discussion about women's MMA since she stepped into the Strikeforce cage for the first time earlier this year. Two armbar wins in under a minute have earned her a lot of accolades, but Rousey's directness and honesty have earned her a lot of detractors. Namely, pretty much every other WMMA fighter. She has made no secret of the fact that she she's willing to market her looks in addition to her skill to get herself ahead of the pack.

Last week Ronda was a guest on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani, and she mades no bones about the fact that she wanted a shot at 135 lb. champion Miesha Tate, and she thinks she would beat her. Rousey believes, despite never competing at 135 pounds and only having four career fights, that a bout between her and Tate would sell better than a a second bout between Tate and Sarah Kaufman, despite Kaufman being the number one contender. This week, Ariel invited both Tate and Rousey onto the show. And as expected, they disagreed on just about everything.

Tate believes that Kaufman and Alexis Davis should be ahead of Rousey, and Ronda needs to fight and win at 135 first. Rousey believes it's a better business idea to fight now:

"I really feel 100 percent that a fight between her and me needs to happen," Rousey said. "It'll be great for women's MMA. It'll be the first highly anticipated fight in women's MMA for a long time ... We need to capitalize on the opportunity while we still have it. I don't want to risk her losing the title and us not being able to fight each other for the title."

Tate stated that people only care because Rousey's attractive:

"I think it's working because she's pretty," Tate said. "If you weren't pretty, it wouldn't matter what you said or didn't say. That's why you're getting this attention. I don't know, I guess I personally like more of a humble approach. You can say you want to be the Chael Sonnen of women's MMA, and Chael gets a lot of press and everything like that, too, but no one likes him."

Rousey had a pretty obvious response to that:

"Yeah, but he makes a lot of money and he gets a lot of title shots, too, doesn't he?"

Star-divide

After some back and forth about what's fair and honorable, the topic switched to the real top contender at 135, Sarah Kaufman. And Ronda didn't hold back:

"Sarah Kaufman kind of gives boring interviews, she's not a supermodel and the way she fights, she doesn't finish matches in extraordinary fashion," she said. "It's just kind of being realistic. I'm sorry that I have to say things bluntly and offend some people. I just want there to be a highly marketable, exciting women's title fight, and I want to be part of that because I feel like I could do a really good job, and you could, too. I think the two of us could do a better job of that than you and Sarah Kaufman."

Kaufman had a pretty curt response to that when told about it later:

"It would be way smarter for the longevity of the division to work her way up," she said. "If she runs through people -- which I don't think she will -- then I'll be happy to beat her face in. She wants to be pretty? She won't be as pretty after our fight."

Does Rousey deserve the shot right away? I don't think so, but she makes some solid points. Promoters make bouts that people want to see, and people would be much more interested in Rousey/Tate than Tate/Kaufman 2. Still, she's no Brock Lesnar in terms of drawing money. Basically, I believe she's not valuable enough to skip the line, no matter how pretty or skilled she thinks she is.

Yeah, I have my doubts. She usually looks pretty damn drawn out at 145.

True, which is all the more reason she shouldn't.

She’s probably worked extremely hard to build and maintain that muscle. It just sucks that there is no one to challenge her at 145 lbs.

Like I said, very few

If the only people Cris compares to are world champion bodybuilders, there’s a huge chance she’s not doing it naturally. Cris is about 160lbs. That’s huge for a natural female bodybuilder.

Especially considering these women dedicate themselves solely to bodybuilding(not another sport) and don’t maintain their physiques year round.

I am also aware that Kaufman is no kickboxer. I would bet a large sum of money on Rousey, and I will if they fight.

Cyborg is the only competetive match to make for Rousey. That match is a question mark….. That leans toward cyborg. I would like to see her fight some more before fighting cyborg. I would hate to see her head get clouded by a loss, but she is an Olympian. They are often some of the most mentally tough people around….. But we haven’t seen her hit yet…….and cyborg is a kickboxer. A pretty damn good one.

she is boxer because she says she is. not because she has competed as one.

She isn’t a Muay Thai champ, she isn’t a golden a gloves champ, she isn’t a karate or tae kwon do Olympian. She doesn’t have amazing ko power, speed or kicks.
She is a grappling based fighter that doesn’t like to/isn’t good (i can’t tell which for sure) at submitting girls. Her style is to takedown and score with weak strikes from guard.
I am not trying to be a jerk. I looked her up on wiki I guess she is a bjj brown belt, but I sure as heck can’t tell from her fights, and she went from purple to brown in a year….. While never scoring a single sub in competition or in a major tournament. So I guess she must be awesome in the gym.

I obviously don’t have numbers to back it up, but proportionally I bet there is a very similar number between male and female KOs in the sport. It isn’t apparent though when 99% of the fights happening are between males so we get to see KO after KO on a weekly basis almost.

I would love to see numbers on the difference between the finish rate and type between the two. To bad that has no chance of happening.

The ratio of KO’s at 135 and 145 in mens MMA isn’t substatially higher than it is in women’s MMA. Comparing men and women directly doesn’t work unless you do it in the same weight class.

Yes there is

But that’s not really the point.

For one, until last year, 145 was MW for women.

Two, LW was the lightest division I have numbers for.

Who cares what she competed in before MMA. She was a dancer, actually. But your assessment of her is completely wrong.

She doesn’t look for the takedown very often at all. She stuffs takedowns and beats people up on the feet. She’s primarily a boxer that uses her range to outpoint her competition. She has a great jab. She’s a very good counterpuncher. Did you see what she did to Liz Carmouche? Jesus, I’m not the kind of guy that ever says “have you ever even seen her fight?” but…you are describing a completely different fighter than Sarah Kaufman.

I didn't and I was rooting for her.

Tate stole that one, for sure. But if you see the fight again, you will see that what Tate showcased there was a) her heart, and b) her being crafty during scrambles.

Everywhere else up to that point was all Marloes, who was just slowly taking her time and breaking her apart like in a Bourne movie. it was that bad.

Don’t get me wrong; she’s a scrappy wrestler and can get herself out of tight jams using her clinch IQ, but I seriously hope her time with Team Alpha Male means her striking is developed enough to be a real useful tool in the future b/c if not, Miesha is in for long nights of getting her ass beat.

i just.went back and watched a few

You’re right I was being unfair. She isn’t just a lay and pray fighter.
But….. She never attempts to pass guard when she is in guard. She just throws shots that are gonna get her caught. The Connen fight was fresh in my mind I suppose. Plus her lack of rarely trying to pass.
And her boxing is still not very good. She does well so good for her.
She doesn’t generate any power in her strikes hardly. Everyone just walks through them. My Rousey prediction still stands.

oh and Rousey has shown zero stand up????

She has walked over to everyone she has fought thrown them on the mat and armbarred them inside of a minute. Literally under a minute. She didn’t teleport into grappling range. Her stand up suits her fight finishing style. Defensive until they clinch.
exactly why is she suppose to put her boxing on display when her opponents can’t survive the first attack?

Yes, Rousey has shown absolutely zero standup. She got blasted by Julia three times before she ever got near her. and Julia’s a kickboxer with very little training in takedown defense. Kaufman is well-trained at keeping the distance. It’s how she beat Tate the first time.

You’re just a grappling guy going gaga over grappling. I’m not surprised. But you’re completely underselling Kaufman and her skills.

And I do think Sarah is good, but not great. I don’t think she,nor Tate , is in Rouseys league. I don’t think they have ever fought world class fighters, except Connen maybe. If you put them in there with your cyborgs and rouseys they will get schooled.
As wmma develops we will see great Thai Fighters, boxers, JUDOKA, bjj , karate/ tae kwon do, and wrestler girls come over. For now though we just have a few of them so the skill gap isn’t as apparent. Sarah is the wmma model 1.0 imho.

Kaufman’s takedown defense is impressive. She sprawls very well. Also, her striking technique is better than some UFC fighters in that she moves her head as she strikes, throws straight punches, and doesn’t brawl. She’s also just very strong for her weight class, and I remember the first time watching her fight, I noticed how big her back was. I have to agree that I think that the-gentle-way is greatly underselling Kaufman here and is really not seeing what she brings to the cage.
Rousey is great, but she has a terrible habit of reaching to get that clinch, and she took a few shots from Budd for doing that. She also really forces the takedown at times, which has been working for her so far, but her opponents weren’t exactly great at defending takedowns either. I am a huge Rhonda Rousey fan, but she is still very green in MMA. In my opinion, I think that Kaufman is a bad stylistic matchup for Rousey at this time.

The thing with the clinch though is that Kaufman uses straight punches to fight at distance. While I think that Rousey could get the takedowns on Kaufman from the clinch, there are things about Rousey like giving up her back to try to force a judo toss and whatnot that makes me question how well her judo will transfer to MMA. Like I said above, she also reaches to really try to get that clinch as well. She has the benefit of the shallow pool of talent in Womens MMA in general though.

With what we’ve seen of Rhonda, I think most people are overrating her actually.

Is she as good as all of that? We have no clue because she has been facing opponents who aren’t near the caliber of the top women in the division. Obviously she has been steamrolling everybody put in front of her, but until she does take that step and faces a Tate/Kaufman/Conen/etc then it’s all speculation with nobody knowing for sure how she will transition.

Saying that, I think she will step in and fill in a much needed spot as a contender giving everybody at the top end a good fight. The difference between her and Kaufman at this point though is that Kaufman has proven herself at the top of the game and Rhonda hasn’t. That and the fact that Rhonda has a monstrous hype train rolling atm.

We have come to find out that being rather competent in MMA is more than enough to fuck with someone’s head in MMA.

Right now ROnda is trouncing chicks left and right b/c they have little to no competitive experience. But throw her against someone that actually does, and things may get real bad real quick for her. All it may take might be someone jabbing the hsit out of her and backpedaling constantly.

Not IMO

Guys who are great at one or two things and good at others do well.

Guys that are mediocre at everything usually don’t. “Rather competent” suggests a very basic level of understanding and proficiency. Which is less than mediocre.

Demian Maia went 16-0 with his basically just his BJJ game. Warren has dominated top FW’s with just wrestling. Rashad rose the ranks as an almost pure wrestler.

Brock is also an example of a guy who was highly touted and got badly beat up later on by less heralded competition, comparatively speaking. I mean, everyone was saying how he would kill Carwi and Velazquez and see what happened.

Fighters like Ronda can be easily derailed by relatively less heralded opponents at any time.

We even saw the bizarro version of what I’m telling you when Shinja Aoki got KTFO’d by Jienotsu during the pure MMA part of their bout.

Saying Ronda is world class in MMA is still sketchy as of now. Granted, the oneworld class girl she can beat right now, Miesha Tate, fights to her strengths, but even girls Tate could beat might give her pause and even beat her.

Ronda can develop immensely, and besides de Randamie she may well be the best pure talent that has ever hit female’s MMA ever. But she might be chomping more than she can chew in here at this present time.

Against the Tate I have seen so far, I can see her winning all within the first round. Miesha just doesn’t have the power behind her shots to put out chicks on a consistent basis and more than likely won’t score a sub on her. But pit her against Marloes, Sarah, Cristiane, even Liz, or Alexis, probably even Zoila, and stuff gets real muddled.

Any girl with a decent standup and a concept of distance is likely to start landing shots on her, especially if her Roudy’s striking is not up to par—and team Hayastan is not known for its strikers.

That’s my point though. There is the top end and the rest of them. Atm Rhonda is facing the rest of them and looking incredibly impressive. That doesn’t mean though that she is going to transition into the top end and destroy people who have a known record for holding their own there.

Until she makes that transition (which she is obviously trying to do and I’m excited to see) we just don’t know and arguments that she is going to have her way are somewhat silly.

Because if she takes that step up and gets completely trounced then she obviously isn’t as good as the top three. I don’t think that is going to happen, but until it’s a proven fact then she simply isn’t.

Consider Bisping for a moment. The man is obviously better than most of the MWs in the world. Yet the one time he has stepped up to face one of the true elites he got completely clowned. Does he deserve the ranking and consideration of being one of the best without having beaten one of the best? Most people here don’t think so, yet there he sits on the rankings.

Rhonda obviously could be safely considered number #4 as far as rankings go. That means nothing though if 1, 2, and 3 are so far ahead of her that it doesn’t matter. She needs to beat one of those women to be considered one of the best or elite. That simple.

Not to mention how much more talented and deep the male FW division is compared to the womens’.

Ultimately I think they both made their position clear and had some solid points. I’m more of a fan of Rousey than Tate, I wouldn’t mind seeing them fight but I also think maybe Rousey should have at least one fight at 135 before she gets to the title.

Pretty funny that Tate is now starting to get sick of the whole looking pretty thing, considering she’s the one who made all those modeling photos we’ve all seen.

Same issue with women’s football. There was a women’s pro league that went bust and now the Lingerie Football League is taking off and getting serious. It started as a gimic halftime show and developed into a fairly serious league that happens to be getting athletic women that have decent football skills. But to stay alive they have to hang onto the lingerie part of their uniforms.

I think for a long time if WMMA wants to stay alive they’re going to have to dance around promoting their more attractive fighters. Just because they’re attractive doesn’t mean their not skilled fighters.

100% of Rousey's wins are easy competition for actual good fighters

The combined record of all her opponents is 14-8…. the major outlier being Ediane Gomes, who is a paper lion with an 8-2 record, all of her wins being against sub .500 opponents.

Ronda looks very promising, but Tate absolutely has the right of it- Rousey hasn’t beat anyone worth a shit. Kaufman is far more deserving than her.

And although everyone is super stoked on RR, girls like Tate and Kaufman would just destroy her at this point. They have very sophisticated takedown defense & submission defense, and are far superior strikers. Hell- I think that Miesha would take her down at will, stifle any submissions, and just pound on Ronda from the top.

I’m not saying that Kaufman and Tate would lose to anyone she has beaten, but do you honestly think that they would have defeated all her past opponents in under a minute?

I maintain my position that Rousey is simply a different level of grappler compared to these women.

by discoandherpes on Dec 1, 2011 4:23 AM EST up reply actions

Styles make fights.

Tate is more of a takedown & top control specialist, a tad more methodical than Rousey in that regard. Judo matwork is very fast- you have 30 seconds to work for a sub. That’s why you see Judo guys like Fedor who can just snag an armbar in an instant.

Kaufman is more of an outside striker who likes to counter.

Sarah would probably knock most of Rousey’s opponents out quickly, and I definitely think that Miesha would be able to stop them within a round as well.

Ronda isn’t a “different level of grappler” than Tate and Kaufman… she’s a different KIND of grappler. You’re being wowed by the speed of Rousey’s finishes… but this is a fool’s error. See: “HOUSTON ALEXANDER IS FOR REAL!” See also: Sokodjou, Dave Terrel, Brandon Vera, Denis Kang, etc

None of those guys you listed are Olympic level athletes, and none of them are female, so it’s not really a relevant argument. If Ronda Rousey was female, she would be exposed fairly quickly. But she’s not.

by discoandherpes on Dec 1, 2011 5:58 AM EST up reply actions

And the "olympic level athlete" argument is so generic.

The most successful Olympic Judoka ever to compete in MMA is Hidehiko Yoshida, whose career record is barely above .500

There’s just not much precedence to say that olympic level judo translates all that well, there are many things that Judoka need to adapt to:

  • The groundwork isn’t limited to 30 seconds at a time.
  • Striking EVERYWHERE.
  • The absence of the gi is a big factor- it actually gives wrestlers a big advantage over Judoka, because of the use of under/ overhooks as opposed to using gi grips.

If Hidehiko Yoshida was a female athlete, I think he would probably beat a large majority of female fighters as well.

Personally, I think that Kaufman would be a nightmare matchup for Rousey at this point as she has very good takedown defense, is strong, and has far superior standup and use of distance. I think that Rousey has a better chance against Tate because she wouldn’t have to worry as much about the standup.

I’m of the opinion that since Womens MMA is pretty shallow and is at its infancy that hotshotting a popular fighter like Rousey would help the division. Tate vs Rousey is a fight that seems to be gaining some traction with MMA fans, and it doesn’t hurt that both of these women are attractive as well. I think that for Rousey’s best interest that she fights one fight at 135 before getting a Title shot so that she gets used to the weight cut, but I wouldn’t have her fight Kaufman as I think that Kaufman would be a very dangerous fight for her.
I think that Womens MMA, at this time, needs a fighter like Rhonda Rousey who has the combination of being attractive, marketable, charismatic, and a good fighter who has highlight reel finishes.

I look at it in a different context.

Tate means Rousey’s toughgirl words and antics are only getting her attention b/c she’s pretty. And…isn’t it true? Sarah Kaufman tried the exact same thing plus dissing Strikeforce publically and where is she now?

Tate is absolutely right. Since when does making a statement of fact make you a hypocrite, why are we even having a discusison about it?

If anything, Miesha can actually claim to have achieved a modicum of success in her career in spite of how attractive she is, unlike Carano who couldn’t.

Tate’s idealism and her inability to separate the sports merit from her glamourized image are what is really troubling to me. Ronda has her head more straight, I think.

I kind of get what you are saying. I think Tate accomplished more in the sense of beating good female MMA fighters, so in the sports aspect of things, then I would say Tate accomplished more. I feel that MMA history, hypothetically speaking, would shine on Carano more than Tate though. The Womens divisions are just extremely shallow, so even though Tate could be winning against good fighters, I don’t think that those wins would be as significant as what Gina has done in her short time in Womens MMA.
Pretty much, I think that Gina has stronger significant accomplishments like bringing Womens MMA to the map, being Womens MMA’s first big star, and being in the first Womens MMA main event on network television. With Tate, I feel that she accomplished more in more of a sports aspects of winning a Title, fighting in a tournament, and beating high-ranked fighters.

Even before Elite XC when Carano was coming up

There were issues with her not making weight badly, and promoters doing nothing to punish her because she was becoming an attraction.

Tate’s resume is far more impressive and she has infinitely more reason to be top-ranked than Gina ever did. Gina’s best wins are over inflated 125 and 135 pounders who have since dropped to more appropriate weight classes.

You could say the same about a lot of guys during the evolution of weight classes. Cyborg did the same thing.

It’s still akin to comparing them to someone who has had a better record or career.

With the power of hindsight, we can see that Gina’s record wasn’t exactly top notch. She was ranked because she won fights, but also benefited from heightened exposure on account of looking good. I don’t think one person would dare say Tate is only top ranked because she is pretty.

Tate hasn’t beaten anyone though either. She has one legit win on her record, over Coenen. That’s it. If we’re going to use the weight class argument, beating Frausto meant nothing. And she’s lost to Kaufman and got KO’d by Kaitlin Young. I would definitely say Tate was put that original SF mini-tourney because she was pretty, and she was given shit competition to face so she’d win it. She earned the title by beating a top contender, but she got the shot because she was handpicked for it.

So…who has beaten someone tough, then? I mean, just to gauge what kind of metric you are using to measure accomplishments, here.

Frausto is legit at 115/125, she beat the best in the world in Megumi Fujii and ran through some other tough competition. Kaufman fought much tougher competition than Tate did. Tara LaRosa beat a lot of girls that are way bigger than her.

Kaufman is in the same wagon as Tate given that sh egot her ass handed to her by the girl Tate submitted.

If you want to discount Tate for beating Frausto, then you have to discount Frausto beating Mega Megu ’cause after that Zoila shifted weight classes again.

As for LaRosa, she has a great record but fights at 125 and the last time she fought someone great in Roxanne Modafferi she lost.

You can’tgo around in weight classes and cherry pick your argument like that.

That's not even mentioning that Zoila's win over Megumi was highly contested.

Robbery

Not to mention, Megu chose not to take her down and still beat her.

Her win over Aguilar was a BS decision too.

Kaufman got her ass handed to her? That’s ridiculous. She got submitted. Not dominated.

Frausto fought her at 115. It wasn’t the smaller girl coming up. Different story.

You’re cherrypicking your argument, and you’re not even doing it well. LaRosa won most of her fights at 135, then dropped. She just won’t come back up.

What?

Kaufman? She got subbed by a girl that got subbed by Tate.

And judging from your position, you are taking a win as a win, given how you tout Frausto’s win over Mega Megu. Using Marloes as a barometer for Tate and Kaufman is a valid argument in saying they are squarely in the same place.

LaRosa has barely fought in the last two years. You are gauging record (a great one) and not performance.

Nobody is calling Tate p4p best, just legit.

Frausto is legit, but her beating Fujii is still debatable to say the least. Just saying…
