The lineup for the UFC's first FX Fight Night event is steadily growing, and this afternoon brought word of a middleweight bout added to the January 20th card in Nashville with MMA Junkie reporting that Jorge Rivera will face Eric Schafer:
Sources close to the event today told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that middleweights Jorge Rivera (19-9 MMA, 7-7 UFC) and Eric Schafer (12-6-2 MMA, 3-5 UFC) have verbally agreed to meet at UFC on FX 1. Contracts are expected shortly.
Rivera, at nearly 40 years of age, has hinted at retirement several times over the last year, especially after a demoralizing TKO loss to Michael Bisping in February, and again after an underwhelming performance against Constantinos Philippou in August, but it appears that the Massachusetts native will strap on the gloves one more time.
Schafer, no spring chicken himself at 35, took an extended break from the sport after being released by the UFC in 2010, only to return at a new weight of 185 lbs with a quick victory on the local Chicago MMA scene in the fall, which led to him being called up once more by the UFC as a short-notice replacement at UFC 136. Schafer lost that fight to Aaron Simpson, but it appears the UFC is extending him the courtesy of getting one more chance in the Octagon, this time with a full training camp behind him.
