Strikeforce Show Targeted For January 7, Rockhold Vs. Kennedy Expected
BloodyElbow.com has learned that the Hard Rock Hotel venue in Las Vegas is being targeted for a Strikeforce show on January 7th of 2012. A representative from the Nevada State Athletic Commission confirmed the promotion's request.
The event, which will be aired on the Showtime network, is likely to stage the first title defense for Strikeforce middleweight champion Luke Rockhold. When the promotion urged him to start training for his next bout, Rockhold recently speculated that Tim Kennedy would be his opponent at an event being aligned for January. This report seems to reinforce Rockhold's claim.
The future of Strikeforce has been in question since the promotion was acquired by Zuffa, LLC, the parent company of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, in March of 2011. "Business as usual" was the initial driver for Strikeforce's operation until select stars were poached from the roster, such as Jake Shields, Nick Diaz, Dan Henderson and Jason "Mayhem" Miller.
With the pre-Zuffa contract between Strikeforce and Showtime nearing expiration and a handful of their premiere fighters being plucked away, expectations for a prosperous future dwindled. However, late last month, Dana White stated that negotiations for a contract extension between Strikeforce and Showtime went "very well", perhaps facilitated by Showtime Sport's new helmsman, Stephen Espinoza.
Scheduling another event to be aired on Showtime is a positive indicator and could signal a new beginning for the Strikeforce promotion.

Jake Shields
Came over to the UFC well before the SF purchase.

But still
He’s “a select star poached from their roster”.

He was a free agent
In the context of the Zuffa takeover of SF, the Shields signing is completely unrelated.

Yeah, not really
There’s nothing “completely unrelated” about Jake Shields getting a UFC title shot in the context of Zuffa taking over SF.

Shields/GSP was signed months before Zuffa purchased Strikeforce. One had nothing to do with the other.
It's that the world is basically a forced labor camp from which the workers, perfectly innocent, are led forth by lottery, a few each day, to be executed.
I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.

You're both wrong.
Shields was never a star to begin with :)
OK
Explain how Jake Shields was not a select fighter the UFC took from their roster.
Jesus.

So much mma
We got 3 weeks straight, 1 week off then at least 6 straight weeks.
Tim Kennedy’s expression makes him look like the type of guy who would giggle and clap his hands while kicking rocks.

Please give us Barnett vs Cormier.
Or is Cormier’s hand still out of commission?
I support this, but Barnett would have issues getting licensed. We need to see that fight soon. Either it serves to consolidate Cormier as a title contender or boost Barnett aspirations to get into the UFC again.

Don’t you remember that the winner of the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix will be the #1 MMA heavyweight in the world? Sheesh where have you been?
No, I meant why to the just die part.

I want SF to be absorbed into the Zuffa hivemind fully so I can get the fights I want now already

What fights tho, really. You know Gil is going to be brought over, so will the winner of the HWGP. Any fight that fans really want to see will happen. In the meantime guys like Larkin, Gracie, Del Rosario, OSP, Masvidal, Wilcox, Fodor, Amagov, Brunson, Romero, I can go on and on, all are quality fighters who need some time before they are ready to make the move. If Strikeforce closes today I don’t think a majority of those guys make the jump. If they stay they can be built up into fights fans will want to see. No to mention the WMMA. It would be a huge shame if all those fighters had to languish in the regional scene when they can be brought along on a big stage. It makes no sense to me when people call for the death of Strikeforce.
