Fedor Emelianenko vs. Cain Velasquez? Dana White Says 'Hell No'

Fedor Emelianenko and M-1's Vadim Finkelstein

With his win over Jeff Monson in M-1 Global last weekend, Fedor Emelianenko got back in the winner's column after three straight Strikeforce loses. He also showed a somewhat modified approach to the game, with an emphasis on striking, gameplan, and, above all else, caution.

After the win, it was only natural that questions would surface about where Fedor goes from here. And, just as it has so many times before with Fedor, the idea of an Emelianenko run in the UFC surfaced. M-1 Global's Director of Operations Evgeni Kogan took to twitter and got the ball rolling by tweeting Dana White and calling out no less than former UFC Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez:

@danawhite Fedor vs Velasquez in 2012, lets make this happen. Fedor is back, and a fight w/ Cain will prove it.

White's response, also via twitter, was simple, straightforward, and emphatic. When asked if the rumors of a possible Fedor/UFC deal were true, Dana replied simply:

hell no!!

Kogan is trying his best to make this sound like a possibility, noting their high attendance for the Fedor vs. Monson fight, and insisting that they would not be looking to co-promote, just to see this fight happen.

My take on it? Despite those loses, there is still a big appeal in seeing Fedor in the UFC. At this point, he will easily go down in the books as the biggest name of this era to never have a UFC fight, and that is a shame. I don't think he has the ability to seriously make a UFC Heavyweight title run (the mind shudders at the thought of Fedor vs. Junior dos Santos), and he's not a good match-up for the top young guns of the division, including Cain Velasquez. But I would be interested to see him against someone like Frank Mir, or even another go with Minotauro.

But will that happen? I wouldn't hold my breath.

Dana White tried to bring Fedor to the UFC before, and M-1 played hardball with the negotiations, making massive demands and asking a huge salary that Zuffa was unwilling to meet. At the time, they felt they could make those demands, as Fedor was the undefeated pound for pound king and clear #1 Heavyweight in the world. But those days are gone. And now, as M-1 comes knocking again, they are finding that their previous strong-arm tactics have come back to bite them. They refused to meet Dana on his terms before - don't be surprised to see Dana refuse to meet them now.

In the end, while there is some upside to a Fedor UFC run, it's not something that his career demands, nor is it something that will have a massive benefit to the UFC (unless they suddenly decide to run a card in Russia at some point). And so we may have to resign ourselves that the mythical Fedor run in the Octagon will forever remain a figment of our imagination.

For real

I love Fedor, but we all know that at this stage in the game, Cain would chew him up and spit him out. I’m content to see Fedor fighting other veteran heavyweights from his era on the free agent market.

Fedor missed his chance because of his poor management! But I wonder if he decided to move to 205 if that would be of interest to Dana. But I doubt he will ever move to 205.

Not trying to make a point! Just saying that his management company now wants him to fight in the UFC and his time has passed. He had a chance last year and his management company blew it. The only reason I wanted him to fight in the UFC is to see how he would do against the guys int he UFC. By not stretch am I saying he would of been champion or anything of the sort.

by Fedornuthugger on Nov 23, 2011 2:40 PM EST up reply actions

I don't get the people who want Fedor to move down to 205

He already got first-round TKO’d by Hendo in what was essentially a light heavyweight bout that Fedor wasn’t forced to cut weight for. If Fedor weakens himself by cutting to 205 does anyone seriously pick him to beat any elite light heavyweight?

As a Fedor fan, the last thing I want to see is Jon Jones beating the hell out of him, Lyoto Machida making him look silly as he swings and misses his looping punches, or Rashad Evans outwrestling him for 15 minutes. That’s what would happen if he fought an elite light heavyweight. And if he’s going to fight the guys who aren’t elite, well, that’s what he’s already doing with M-1. So why sign with the UFC at all?

Even if he did move down to 205 there is 0 chance he would get a title fight. And I don’t think it would weaken him to move to 205. He has a lot of extra weight on him. I don’t think he is elite anymore but I would still like him to fight some of the better 205’ers.

I agree 100%. But I also feel there is zero chance of him getting out of his comfort zone as you put it. He is old school and the game has passed him by. At one time, his size and physique didn’t matter because he was more skilled. But everyone has up’ed there game except Fedor. In addition, his age is now a factor.

by Fedornuthugger on Nov 23, 2011 2:42 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

These days, Fedor has a family, his own gym, and a newfound resurgence of faith all keeping him from leaving Stary Oskol. At 33, I’m completely fine with him taking some free agent fights against HW veterans of his own era. Maybe a fight against Rizzo next would be a solid matchup? it’s because his rabid fans think the only reason he lost at HW is the weight. They don’t realize that he will still be undersized at 205 because he doesn’t know how to cut weight.

by Phildo on Nov 23, 2011 5:15 PM EST up reply actions

Here you go

Reasons why people want to see Fedor move down in weight class

1- He has the height and reach of a MW
2- He lost 3 in a row at HW , including a brutal beating from Bigfoot who used his size to whoop that ass
3- It would be nice to see someone that talented actually show up for a fight in shape… and say what you will, but someone carrying that much body fat is not in their peak athletic condition, you can’t flex fat, and it doesn’t make you faster, or stronger.
4- While he has had success against bigger men before, modern top HW’s, many of them with tremendous wrestling credentials, are big enough and athletic enough to erase the advantage that Fedor had- being a faster more agile fighter.

by Clark Griswald on Nov 23, 2011 5:54 PM EST up reply actions

Wow, now that is a well written summary of why Fedor should move down!

by Fedornuthugger on Nov 23, 2011 8:43 PM EST up reply actions

well....(thanks)

if he wants to keep fighting, which apparently he does, I think fighting guys his own size would be a good move. I’d personally rather see hypothetical match-ups like Shogun, Rampage, Anderson Silva, Rashad, Phil Davis etc… than see him give up 40 pounds of muscle to JDS, Cain, or give up 60 lbs of muscle to guys like Brock, Ubereem or Shane.

It is AMAZING that Fedor beat all the guys that he beat when he had the *lean body mass of a MW and he was fighting at HW…. but he is not in his 20’s anymore and not in my opinion, athletic enough to overcome that obstacle 30+ fights and 10+ years into his MMA career at 35 years old.

I think he still has fight in him, and there are fights I’d like to see. Hypothetically, I’d like to see those fights against solid UFC 205ers. Non UFC HW and LHW competition is not even worth discussing. He, in theory… could win 2 more fights against cans, get in actual fighting shape (<15% body fat) and negotiate a reasonable contract and fight in the UFC before he was too old….

I’m not gonna hold my breath.

After NYE, I think we'll have more of a complete picture.

Dana says a bunch of shit all the time, but now is the more likely time for them to sign Fedor. I mean, they clearly have a thinned heavyweight picture and way worse fighters than him on their roster with not as much clout (Schaub, Barry, Nog, maybe Nelson, Rothwell, the dude that knocked Duffee the fuck out, etc).

If Fedor handles Ishii, you can bet your ass they will at least give it some thought depending on how much he asks for. Whether His management played hardball or not in the past hardly amounts to anything other than Dana keeping a grudge which, let’ sbe honest, is hardly anything definitive these days.

How so?

Don’t put him up against vulnerable prospects. Guys like Big Nog aren’t going to make a championship run, why not put him up against Fedor for a nostalgia fight that will make some PPV bucks? If Fedor wins and then refuses to fight, how does that hurt the UFC?

Honest question, do we know how Fedor performs on PPV?

by discoandherpes on Nov 23, 2011 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

You have the Affliction shows

But those numbers would be different given this would be the UFC (higher) and his much diminished reputation (lower).

I think as a co-main event, he’d pull more than his weight in PPV and live gate, especially if it was in Japan.

by Pantherhare on Nov 23, 2011 2:49 PM EST up reply actions

Fedor’s not going to contribute a lot of PPV buys to an event these days.

by Machiel Van on Nov 23, 2011 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Well by the sound of it, Fedor’s camp is still looking for top guys and not “nostalgia” fights.

Second as far as it hurting the UFC, it probably doesnt hurt them but it doesnt help them to put money and resources into a guy who may or not be willing to fight for your company after the fight. This isnt new. Why do you think Bob Arum has gone strictly in house for Pacquaio opponents?

by bigdmmafan on Nov 23, 2011 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

I agree, he is in no way ready for Cain. Then again, he probably have the same or better shot than Kongo, who Cain called out.

It helps them for that fight. True, you’d rather build up guys that you know are going to fight for you in the future, but it’s not automatic that money promoting a one-fight guy is money wasted.

there would be nothing M-1 could do until it expired. If it was for five fights, they would have to deal with the same pay and conditions for five straight fights. He would be signed exclusively worldwide, so if they tried any strong-arm tactics Fedor would just have to sit on the shelf. Dana isn’t nervous, I believe he just wants nothing to do with Fedor and M-1 Global.

by Machiel Van on Nov 23, 2011 5:58 PM EST up reply actions

If I am Dana White, I look at Fedors ranking, and offer him a deal like the one Cheick Kongo has, since they are similar and rank. If he takes it, then he makes money for the UFC and is a potential draw.

If Fedor gets to the UFC and fights someone like Mir, Carwin, Nog, or a Roy Nelson and just gets lit up – then White can say he told you so – I don’t see the downside

by RJK256 on Nov 23, 2011 1:29 PM EST reply actions

Most sensible thing I've read so far.

If they don’t deal with Fedor and Vadim, it’ll be b/c the asking price is too steep.

The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.

by Unabomberman on Nov 23, 2011 1:34 PM EST up reply actions

Then make the offer public, use Twitter and social media, and force Fedor’s hand.

It won’t be until next year anyway so if he wins on his NYE show, depending on how things play out, he could end up with a top ten ranking – offering a deal based on his ranking, makes sense and if they turn it down, he can simply say they are crazy.

White can show that Fedor got blasted by a MW like Hendo as well.

by RJK256 on Nov 23, 2011 1:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yes.

But seeing Fedor still trucking guys would kind of put a clout in Zuffa given how they have way less talented hws to choose from.

Those Hendo highlights will come in handy a lot in the future if Fedor fails at losing.

The Internets: Where there are no girls and men become children.

by Unabomberman on Nov 23, 2011 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

If Nog loses, that is the first fight I would give him – then see what comes of Barnett, those fights are nostalgic draws and make a lot of money – and they can offer Fedor less, not making him the main event. Crocop could be another option if he is willing to fight again.

If Fedor has a resurgence or is willing to fight at 205, fights with guys like Rua, Lawal, or Rampage could make a lot of sense – there would be a lot of big fights and money to be made

by RJK256 on Nov 23, 2011 1:54 PM EST up reply actions

Yup

I would have avoided saying the same thing if I had just kept reading the posts further down. UFC signing Fedor wouldn’t be a bad thing.

I totally agree with you, but 1-3 plus being on Dana’s shit list gives you no ground to stand on, while Dan Hardy (somehow) draws PPV buys. If M-1 were out of the picture, I think Dana might be more open to negotiate. As a fan, I really think Fedor should be in the UFC…as a realist I understand that $$ makes the world go around. That said, if enough people want to see Fedor in the UFC (and pay for that to happen in PPV buys), Dana would change his mind.

Again, get Kogan/M-1 out of the picture and it’s a completely different story.

Remember Nog, Hunt, Rothwell, Barry, Schaub, Nelson, and maybe Mir? Fedor is likely to beat all those guys on a given night.

Worth it from their standpoint. Sure he’d beat a lot of the heavyweights in the UFC, but do we know he’d beat a guy like Mir at this point? The UFC can get by quite fine without a mid-level heavyweight. He needs to prove he’s back in the top 10, which is damned tough to do. Best case scenario for Fedor is that Barnett wins the SFHWGP and doesn’t sign with the UFC, instead choosing to fight Fedor.

I disagree with the idea that he doesn’t have the ability to hang with the top HW’s. He definitely has the ability, he lacks the training. Fedor’s ground game was once tops, so much so that he hung with Nog on the ground and has so many submission wins. That game has rusted and needs to be sharpened. His lack of top level modern training, and for some reason his inability to perform well in a cage, is what made his Strikeforce run so poor. It can be remedied, only if he puts in the effort.

his speed was what really made him such a great fighter and it looks like thats just about gone. sure if he were to sharpen up some technical holes he might be able to pull a run like randy had at the end of his career when he beat vera, coleman, and toney but i just find it hard to imagine him beating guys like cormier, velasquez, a healthy brock, a healthy carwin, overeem, barnett and of course JDS

I wouldn’t touch Fedor with a 10 foot pole. M-1 loves to renegotiate the contract after every win and make everything as difficult as possible. You’re doing to have to a bit more than beat Jeff Monson to interest Dana in taking on a guaranteed headache.

Knowing Dana

He would probably make Fedor go through the TUF house.

Well, that’s just about the only way you’d get me to watch TUF.

It would be like the odd couple

But with one half of the couple being a stoic, slightly pudgy Russian who eats all of the houses icecream, and the other half being 15 loud tattooed American guys.

Perhaps..

Kimbo and James Toney could join him?

Hendo is one of the few guys that left the UFC on his terms, and came back on the same, if not better terms.

Gatti. Dekkers. Pele. Aoki. Kang. Vanderlei. Basillio. Harry Greb.

Werdum’s another one, sort of. Diaz, Penn back in the day. The UFC’s very good at using fighters up and throwing them away when they’re over the hill.

The Fedor myth has been debunked.

Would it be cool to see him in the UFC? Yeah. Sure. But am I dying to see him in the UFC? Nah. Do I particularly care? Yeeeeeaaaaa-no.

But there are a few hundred thousand other people out there that would still be interested. So the myth is over, big deal. It’s not like he’s Ken Shamrock or Kimbo, guys who absolutely can’t cut it. What reason can you give that he shouldn’t be in the UFC?

Just so we get this out of the way before I’m accused of clutching testicles or angry-typing: I’m just wondering what your reasons are for not wanting to see him in the UFC. Also, there was just a bit more Yeah, than No at the end.

I have no reasins for why or why not. I just don’t care personally. That said, I’m sure many other people do care. If he fights in the UFC, great, I’ll enjoy it since I think he can compete with anyone, even the top guys. If he doesn’t, I am not losing any sleep over it.

Fraser’s got the details here wrong. They’re not suggesting that Fedor return to UFC. In a post-fight interview, Vadim proposed a Cain vs. Fedor fight for Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Kogan is just taking what Vadim said and applying it to his own dumbass twitter campaign to annoy everyone in MMA. So any analysis of the possibility of UFC signing Fedor is off the mark and Fraser should probably read the M-1 published piece “Dirty Politics” which is where the offer from Vadim to do a stadum show in Moscow originated.

Obviously bs by M1

But, I admit, I’d love to see Fedor fight in the UFC, if only in hopes of a storybook return to grace. Imagine that story? Long-time p4p king hits the skids and returns to the top? Kind of like the Henderson story currently, except Fedor was much more well-regarded in his prime and Hendo never hit the skids quite like the Russian.

Even if you accept him in the M-1 guys will not make it easy.

God forbid he finds some success in the UFC then they’ll try the crap they did with StrikeForce where they kept renegotiating the deal and stuff.

Comes off as a total act of desperation by M-1 Global

Hindsight is 20/20…not taking that UFC deal to fight Lesnar in 09 was dumb.

They turned down crazy money. Demanding co-promotion, this and that etc.

Now they are doing their best to get Fedor in the UFC at all.

Example

Fedor used to be the really hot girl that flirted with you, you thought you were in but then she broke your heart. Now that shes fat and desperate, she wants your attention.

There’s a part of you that still wants to fuck her, but the spite is overwhelming so you tell her to fuck off.

Perfect reaction from Dana. Fedor doesn’t belong in the top of the UFC and he isn’t “back” after one win over Monsoon. M-1 should have taken their deal with the UFC when they had the shot.
