Strikeforce Challengers Ratings Hit All-Time Low
While there has still been no announcement regarding the future of Strikeforce, the ratings for last Friday night's Challengers event are in and they're not good.
The November 18th event -- headlined by Lumumba Sayers vs. Antwain Britt and Ronda Rousey vs. Julia Budd -- drew an average of just 143,000 viewers -- the lowest in the history of the series and a drop of 60,000 viewers from their September 23rd Challengers event that featured Lorenz Larkin vs. Nick Rossborough and Lavar Johnson vs. Shawn Jordan.
The Friday show featured Sayers knocking out Britt in just 28 seconds and Rousey submitting Budd in just 39 seconds. Of the five fights that made air, there were first-round finishes in four of them.
The viewership is the lowest since the October 20, 2010, Challengers show headlined by Roger Bowling vs. Bobby Voelker and Lavar Johnson vs. Virgil Zwicker.
Strikeforce has one more event scheduled for 2011 with Lightweight Champion Gilbert Melendez vs. Jorge Masvidal and Women's Featherweight Champion Cris Santos vs. Hiroko Yamanaka scheduled for Saturday, December 17th. The promotion's contract with Showtime has been said to run out in February 2012 and UFC President Dana White revealed recently that he's taken over negotiations on whether Strikeforce will continue with the network past that date.

I'm in no way a Strikeforce fan, but this is just depressing to watch.
It’s like an episode of Wings. Just horrible.
Need to know how much you suck? If we were the Planeteers, you'd be Heart. Me? I'd be Goliath from Gargolyes. Because the Planeteers are fucking awful.

This is the first challangers card I just didn't watch none of the match ups interested me other than Rousy Budd
I just want Strikeforce to die at this point and be absorbed into the Zuffa hive mind

Psh, whatever.
More monkey-pussy/Rousey for me!

For realz...I think I'm in love
Gotta respect Budd for never blinking while getting her arm torn off though.
At least I'm not a whiny, little bitch.

hmm....
I really like the idea of Strikeforce continuing on as a sort of developmental league for the UFC…a bit of a feeder org.
An org to grab up extra prospects, build them up, feature vets that shouldn’t be taking up room on UFC main cards…but still have name value to bring in audiances…an org to keep another MMA promotion off of Showtime..etc etc
But if the ratings continue to not be good…I’m curious if Showtime will be interested.

Honest question
why would the UFC need or want a development league? This isn’t baseball were there is value in bringing up prospects to help you in the future against competing teams. There is no competition for the UFC so why not wait until they prove themselves somewhere else and swoop in and sign them instead of wasting the time and money hoping they turn out.
I would think the UFC would be better off putting it’s resources into foreign branches – a kind of development league I guess – to expand the talent and audiences overseas.
Think of it this way, where would Nick Diaz go today to become the star he is right now? Bellator? I have a hard time imagining that. Strikeforce was/is the perfect place for people like Nick, Barnett, Melendez, etc to prove or reprove themselves to the North American audience and thus set up some big fights in the UFC once they outgrew the org.
It's that the world is basically a forced labor camp from which the workers, perfectly innocent, are led forth by lottery, a few each day, to be executed.
I don't think that's just the way I see it. I think that's the way it is. Are there alternative views? Yes. Will any of them stand close scrutiny? No.

Oh, it would definitely be good for guys like Nick Diaz
But is it good for the UFC. If that guy becomes a “star” elsewhere he’s going to have to go to the UFC eventually. Everything that rises must converge. And if without a Strikeforce you can’t have ready made stars like you’re suggesting, it’s easier to let those guys hone their skills outside of the UFC, then become stars inside of it.
It would make sense for the UFC to run a feeder league if it pays for itself. But if it costs them money, it’s not really worth it when there are people lining up to do it for free.

The fact that Dana went to NY specifically to meet with SHO execs and his follow up interview with Ariel wasn’t filled with expletives is a good sign there might be a future. But, promotion for these events will remain minimal till a deal is reached.

that’s the key. No one has really had any reason to promote these cards lately, and it’s showing in the ratings. Challengers is at least a d level show for zuffa, we don’t know what Showtime is thinking about mma, but if they want to keep SF (or anything with zuffa) putting any effort into boosting the ratings and raising the price they would have to pay for it would be stupid.
There was no promotion for this card, and the main event had two fighters coming off a loss. It was a good card though with some really quick and exciting finishes. With ratings like this, I don’t really see why Showtime would stick with Strikeforce.

It was a really good card, too
Well, an exciting card. But what else can we ask for?

"You'll get Lil Wayne in woman pants and like it!" - Krimson
Yep, it ended up being a good night of fights all and all. A shame that it got absolutely no promotion effort at all and obviously suffered for that.

Watching Strikeforce die is a lot like watching the WCW die. I never really understood why Dana White bought it. If he wanted to strip it for parts, it would have been a lot cheaper waiting for their contracts to end. What a shame. Fuck you Scott Coker.

FU Scott Coker?
What did he do?

His partners decided to cash out
Scott Coker tried to stop the buyout from happening.

What a damn shame really
Strikeforce was such a fun little up and coming promotion before the buyout. You know that Scott Coker just has to be sick over this whole thing.
