Kyle Kingsbury had his four fight win streak snapped by a more complete and polished mixed martial artist when he ran into Stephan Bonnar at UFC 139. Bonnar out-brawled Kingsbury for the majority of the first round before getting a takedown and dominating Kingsbury with positioning on the ground. The second and third rounds saw more of the same as Bonnar worked takedowns and passed guard with regularity, dominating almost every second of the fight.
Bonnar was a slight underdog coming into the bout but was simply too much for Kingsbury, who is still a baby in this game by comparison.
What was the high spot of this fight?
It wasn't the usual exciting stuff one gets from a Bonnar fight but the fight round saw some fun exchanges with Bonnar making Kingsbury have to brawl rather than playing a technical striking game. The early parts of the fight were by far the most exciting.
Where do these guys go from here?
It's an easy trap to fall into "match up against a winner/loser from the same card" but I like the idea of putting Bonnar in against Ryan Bader. Bader also won on the card and will be in similarly good shape as he also had no trouble in his fight. Seeing if Bader can handle the brawling and relentless nature of Stephan's style. Regardless of if that fight happens or not, Bonnar's next step may simply come down to how regularly he plans on fighting going forward. With a 3 fight winning streak it may be appealing for him to be more active in 2012.
As for Kingsbury? With a record of 4-1 in his last 5 he isn't going anywhere. For the time being it appears that he is still in the stage of his career where he should be carefully matched up with Fabio Maldonados and Ricardo Romeros.
Watch it now, later or never?
I guess you can live without ever seeing this fight, a strange thing to say about a Bonnar bout. Given how many other good fights there were this weekend, this can go in the never pile and you'll not have missed anything.
