Report: Hatsu Hioki vs. Bart Palaszewski Planned for UFC 144 in Japan
Another Japanese standout has been booked for the UFC's return to Japan in February. Highly-regarded featherweight, Hatsu Hioki, will get the chance to fight in front of his countrymen against slugger, Bart Palazszewski, according to a report from MMA Weekly:
Sources close to the match-up confirmed to MMAWeekly.com that the bout has been verbally agreed by the participants for the show taking place Feb. 26 at Saitama Super Arena in Japan.
Hioki came into his UFC debut last month against George Roop as one of the top-ranked featherweights outside of the UFC. Although many expected Hioki to find his way into title contention immediately, his underwhelming performance against Roop, despite winning the decision, has apparently led the UFC to ease him into the title picture at 145 lbs. "Bartimus" also made his UFC debut on the same card as Hioki, after many years on the regional circuit and in organizations such as the IFL and the WEC. Known for his knockout power, Palaszewski put it on display against Tyson Griffin, finishing him in the first round.
Hatsu Hioki (25-4-2)
W George Roop (split decision) - UFC 137
W Donald Sanchez (submission - triangle choke) - Shooto Tradition 2011
W Marlon Sandro (unam. decision) - Sengoku Soul of Fight
Bart "Bartimus" Palaszewski (36-14)
W Tyson Griffin (KO - punches) - UFC 137
L Kamal Shalorus (split decision) - WEC 53
W Zack Micklewright (KO - punch) - WEC 50
Here's the current rumored card for UFC 144, scheduled for February 26th, 2012 at the Saitama Super Arena:
-Frankie Edgar vs. Ben Henderson (UFC lightweight championship)
-Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon
-Yushin Okami vs. Tim Boetsch
-Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Jake Shields
-Mark Hunt vs. Cheick Kongo
-Hatsu Hioki vs. Bart Palaszewski

I love this fight. God, this better be on the broadcast.

Great fight
Hioki’s getting a title shot if he wins this. Isn’t he?

I'd imagine so.
Ranked number 2 in the world w/ 2 straight wins in the UFC? Sounds like the stuff title shots are made of…

Haha,
I’m joking more than anything, honestly. Even my Jon Fitch comment was just a joke.
I think Hendo absolutely deserves a title shot if he wants one, and I understand why Fitch hasn’t gotten a second shot yet.
I was just trying to be witty or something. :)
I know, me too

One of Hioki’s biggest problems, and it will probably be one of his biggest issues in the cage moving forward, is that he doesn’t combine all aspects of MMA that well. For example, he would take Roop down, but there’s no ground n pound and no elbows from the top. He seems to either be striking or grappling, but not both in my opinion.
As far as this fight goes, he should be able to take Bartimus down though.

This is a common symptom of the "trains in Japan" malady
Over there they tend to train individual arts separately, as opposed to the more homogeneous MMA training you might see in the US or Brazil. Their whole system is really outdated for the most part.
I would suggest Hioki make the move stateside, at least for his camps, but that’s asking a lot of a fighter living on the other side of the world, and from a drastically different culture to boot.
Hey, he trained in Tristar for like five minutes.

I remember hearing about that from fighters like Okami and Shinya Aoki. It really showed in the Hioki vs Roop fight that they practice one individual art separately.

Hopefully Hioki can impress in this fight.
Good match up.

Maybe they're giving Hioki the anti Akiyama treatment
And have him fight worst fighters after wins.

Debatable at FW
That was Bart’s debut at 145. This is, at best, a linear move for Hioki: didn’t the last guy to beat Roop get a title shot?

Hioki's got this.
Fighting on home turf is such an advantage here. Hioki doesn’t have to fly across the Pacific Ocean and acclimatize, while Palaszewski has to do that.

Bartimus is going to knock Hioki out.
I love Hatsu, but Bartimus looked absolutely fantastic at 145 and should have some real devastating power in that division.

Surprised with lack of Pride mega stars
Thought they might load this up with huge Pride stars, and I guess they still could as three of them were tied up last night. Seems like they’re going with the UK cards’ blueprint heavy on countrymen though, which is cool. Not saying making little guys and Jap fighters the main focus is wrong at all, but it is a little surprising.
