Danny Castillo picked up his first stoppage victory in the UFC with a first-round TKO of TUF veteran Shamar Bailey. He dominated the fight from bell to bell, using his superior wrestling to pull off two flashy slams and ground-and-pounding his way to victory. It was, by, far, Castillo's most impressive performance since his WEC days.
Bailey came in heavy for the bout at 158 pounds and didn't even try to cut down to 155 after the initial weigh-ins. Castillo felt disrespected by that, and took it to him in the cage. It was another victory for the former group of WEC lightweights that are currently flourishing in the UFC. The lightweight bout was the first fight on the UFC 139 preliminary portion of the card, and was streamed live on Facebook.
What was the high spot of this fight?
Castillo showed impressive strength as he picked up Bailey twice and carried him around before slamming him to the mat.
Where do these guys go from here?
Castillo definitely helped his standing in the organization with another win, improving to 2-1 in the UFC after a long up-and-down WEC run. He's certainly not in contention for a bout with a top contender or anything, but it's something that he can build off of. A bout with with the winner of the Mark Bocek vs. Nik Lentz fight at UFC 140 might make some sense.
In all likelihood, Bailey will be released from the promotion following two losses and missing weight in this bout. Despite a win over Ryan McGillivray at the TUF 13 finale, he is now 1-4 in his last five bouts and doesn't look like he belongs in the UFC.
Watch it now, later, or never?
Later. While most first-round finishes are worth watching now, it was a bit of an anti-climactic finish and the fight lacked relevance. There are betting things from the card to spend your time on.
