Chris Weidman's path as a 185-pound UFC prospect continued to be an easy one in a first-round submission win over Tom Lawlor at UFC 139.
In the fight's opening seconds, Weidman had no problems evading Lawlor's strikes and got a takedown within 45 seconds that was the beginning of the end. Weidman controlled him and worked for a tight darce choke that had Lawlor out cold at 2:52. Seriously, that was it. The 27-year-old made it look that easy.
Thanks to a prelim card filled with quick finishes, the bout made the Spike portion of the telecast.
What was the high spot of the fight?
Without a doubt, the darce choke finish. Weidman (7-0) had the finisher in so tight, he had to tell the referee that Lawlor (7-4-0-1) was out. After releasing, Weidman showed he's a sportsman and helped revive his opponent by rubbing his chest. Lawlor came to a few seconds later.
Weidman's NCAA Divison I wrestling caliber showed in his ability to control Lawlor on the ground in transitioning for the choke. He's clearly learning the BJJ game from his coach Matt Serra and has two straight first round choke submission victories.
Where do these guys go from here?
Weidman had a perfect 2011 with three UFC wins and 2012 could be his breakout year in the division. As made evident by two quick first-round wins, he needs a step up in competition which guys like Court McGee, Jorge Rivera or Ed Herman could provide. As he took no damage in this fight, expect to see him booked no later than the UFC's Super Bowl weekend event and potentially sooner.
Since starting his UFC career at 2-0, Lawlor has struggled with losses in three of his last four fights. This was Lawlor's first fight of the calendar year and that might earn him another chance, but the decision on whether to fully absorb Strikeforce could result in Lawlor being cut. If he does get another UFC opportunity, he's in must-win territory.
Watch it now, later or never?
You can watch it later. It'll take three minutes out of your day and if you're not familiar with Weidman, you'll get a good look at a true 185-pound prospect. Plus, you'll get to enjoy the visual of Lawlor's rat tail.
