UFC 139 Results: Dan Henderson Wins Decisions Over Shogun Rua In An Absolute Classic

Fedor and Henderson

Dan Henderson won a Unanimous Decision over Mauricio Rua at UFC 139. All three judges scored the fight 48-47 for Henderson. The fight will go down as one of the best fights of all time, regardless of combat sport. It was Henderson's return to the UFC after a stint in Strikeforce and Rua's eighth fight in the octagon.

This is one of those fights where no recap can truly do it justice. There are no words to describe the heart that both men displayed over 25 minutes. Henderson landed several heavy shots and had Rua hurt on multiple occasions. Rua had him in some very bad positions and had Henderson out on his feet in the fourth round after a combination of uppercuts and hooks.

The story will be that both of these men survived some terrible positions to fight from bell to bell. Fans and media have long called for five round non title fights and tonight's fight is why. When two fighters lay it all on the line the fans are treated to what ended up being one of the best fights of all time.

Dan Henderson picks up the win and possibly a shot at a title. Dana White has hinted that Hendo could challenge Anderson SIlva for the middleweight belt. Rua walks away with the loss but likely won't lose any momentum with fans and the UFC.

in complete agreement with 47-47

I say forget the Silva fight. Book Hendo v Rua 2. Great fight card. It is too bad that Hendo v.Rua wasnt the Fox fight. Imagine that fight on national tv. Great night for mma.

I agree that was a 10-8 as well

but I’m still fine with Dan taking the decision, last round both men were gassed as hell. Shogun should have tried some sub attempts, I was yelling at my TV as to why he wasn’t, I wasn’t really surprised at the decision win for Hendo.

That’s the way I had it too. A 10-10 for the first round could be argued but I thought Hendo being in control for the majority of that round helped him edge out Shogun.

But it should have been

10-9
10-9
10-8
9-10
8-10

So Dan Henderson still would have won

Oh!

I thought you were referring to the fight. Yeah I honestly had the 1st 3 rounds for Dan and the last 2 for shogun, round 5 being a 10-8. I believe Henderson had a 10-8 round as well. I was hoping for a draw but I knew Hendo would get the decision. Excellent fight though.

the only way i can see it, it that Shogun didnt do alot of damage in the 5th. henderson avoided a majority of the blows and nothing powerful landed. part he ran a grappling clinic but it was the grappling equiv of dominating a round with a jab.

i scored it 10-8 though

I thought Shogun landed some heavy shots from the mount, at least heavy enough to cause Hendo to turtle up multiple times. Sure he wasn’t close to ending the fight but the mount position and the huge accumulation of GNP are more than enough to get him a 10-8.

I think Hendo not getting a 10-8 for the 3rd was a worse mistake.

only die hard Rua fan have it a draw

It was the wrong score because the third round was clearly 10 – 8 for Henderson. God. I just absolutely hate it when Rua fights. His fans are just the most awful people I have seen. Just like those annoying Fedor fans. They just don’t give the other guy credit. I am glad this was not a draw. If it was scored a draw you all would be complaining that Rua won it!

But I may agree with this. One of the first two rounds could have also been a 10-8.

I had it

10-9 Hendo
10-9 Hendo
10-8 Hendo
10-9 Shogun
10-8 Shogun

Hendo was doing well enough in the first half of the 4th so it wasn’t a 10-8.

by doomrider7 on Nov 20, 2011 12:16 AM EST up reply actions

Hate to be that guy but Shogun’s time at the top is done. He came out completely slow and plodding since the start of the bell. The only thing he had to keep him going was his iron will, damn the guy is tough as they come.

Also, no way in hell should Hendo challenge Jones for the belt. This was an amazing fight, but Jon Jones would’ve destroyed both of them in the ring at the same time. An Anderson fight would be a far better fit for Hendo, even if it would probably end in the same manner as the first

by savik on Nov 20, 2011 12:02 AM EST reply actions

The thing about Hendo is....

he could be fighting Darth fucking Vader, and one right hand could still change everything. I kinda want to see him against Jones just because he has that one Right Hand to Rule Them All.

Disappointed that Rua didn't go for the submission

It drives me crazy that these guys spend so much time in dominant positions and yet don’t seriously work for submissions. Especially when they’re reputed to have strong jiu jitsu. How long did Rua spend in full mount? And he tried for a half-hearted arm triangle? At least in the last 30 seconds go for the arm bar. Dan was holding it out there again and again just begging for Rua to tear it off. Rua bloody well should have known that there was a good chance he was down on the score cards.

An amazing fight nonetheless.

by High Roller on Nov 20, 2011 12:05 AM EST reply actions

Fatigue, pure fatigue

Staying tight on that armbar transition takes more energy than it looks, and Shogun had zip left in the tank at that point.

Fatigue and going for an armbar from mount risks his position

Food goes in here.

by Pandanus on Nov 20, 2011 12:08 AM EST up reply actions

I've experienced the extreme fatigue of fighting

in both submission wrestling tournaments and full contact muay thai. So I understand pretty well the difficulty of pushing yourself when you’re that deep into a fight. OK, fine, not after a 25 minute ass kicking… but I have an idea.

Anyway, as far as giving up his position is concerned: that’s why you work from the mount until the last 30-45 seconds of the fight and then go for the hail mary submission. There’s nothing to lose, especially when you’re probably going to lose the decision. If his corner didn’t tell him that then they lost the fight for him.

by High Roller on Nov 20, 2011 12:25 AM EST up reply actions

there's a lot to lose

He gives up position and Henderson reverses and starts pounding on him. Look at the way Hendo spun out of the rear naked in the 4th round or how Hendo locked on that crucifix. It’s also never been Shogun’s game to go for subs from top control. Not exactly the moment to try something new.

by Trust Doesn't Rust on Nov 20, 2011 12:40 AM EST up reply actions

In Shogun's mind

if he stayed on top and kept pounding, there was a good chance of getting a 10-8 round. If he ends up on his back after an armbar escape and takes a little GnP, that’s probably out the window. Now, it didn’t work out for him, but that’s more a fault of judging than of fight strategy.

this fight is exactly why the half point system is terrible for MMA. you would have had some crazy scorecards, just half points flying all around the place. judges can’t even get that 5th round scored right, how are they going to effectively determine what merits a half point in a fight with so many momentum swings.

Dan’s surely tough as nails, but best of all time guys don’t get dominated like Arona dominated him there, especially in the wrestling. Still, crazy to think that was like 8 years ago.

However, old Dan has really found his form in ways that young Dan couldn’t. He’s figured out how to play to his relatively limited strengths (toughness, knockout power, sub defense, clinch) like nobody else ever. He deserves one last “defining moment” fight.

Most guys not named Clay Guida don't want hair in their eyes during a fight

It’s not like Faber walks around looking like that any other night. WMMA fighters corn-row their hair all the time.

Hendo is legit and he has been quite the threat even at his age

what a fucking bad ass, they should call him the immortal Hendo

I am willing to test myself against the toughest fighters in the world, in front of hundreds of thousands or even millions of fans, over and over again. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose, but I always come to fight. I've been doing this for the past fourteen years, and I have at least a few more strong years left in me. What have you done in the past fourteen years other than act like a moron on this forum and hang on Anderson's nuts? - Dan Henderson.

TRT

it’s like a Senzu Bean.

Anderson Silva, Edson Barboza, Jose Aldo, Charles Oliveira, Thiago Alves = Muay Thai wrecking machines!

The word amazing is often overused...

but it fits here. So many times during that fight I was mentally begging the referee not to stop it. I thought the last round was a 10-8 too, but I don’t care about the decision. Both guys, and all of us, won tonight. Gotta love MMA!

I walk across the dead train yard, remembering who we are.

Anyone else crying out for an armbar?

In the 5th when Hendo was mounted and throwing up a straight arm in defense, several times. I guess Shogun didn’t want to lose position but damn it was there.
