Joe Lauzon vs. Anthony Pettis Confirmed for UFC 144 in Japan
Two of the UFC's most exciting lightweights had been calling each other out and the bout was rumored for a Las Vegas event, but now the UFC has confirmed that Joe Lauzon and Anthony Pettis will instead collide in Japan at UFC 144 in February:
Verbal agreements are in for a match between two of the most exciting lightweights in the sport as Joe ‘J-Lau’ Lauzon will face Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis February 26th in Saitama, Japan," confirmed UFC president Dana White today.
Both men are coming off impressive wins, with Lauzon derailing Melvin Guillard's title aspirations in less than a minute, while Pettis showed his willingness to follow a careful gameplan when he defeated the always-dangerous Jeremy Stephens via decision with a methodical, takedown-based attack. UFC 144 is expected to take place at the Saitama Super Arena on February 26th.
Joe Lauzon (21-6)
Win Melvin Guillard (submission - RNC) - UFC 136
Win Curt Warburton (submission - kimura) - UFC on Versus 4
Loss George Sotiropoulos (submission - kimura) - UFC 123
Anthony Pettis (12-2)
Win Jeremy Stephens (unam. decision) - UFC 136
Loss Clay Guida (split decision) - TUF 13 Finale
Win Ben Henderson (unam. decision) - WEC 53

Oooh me likey
Tatum: I think he's a good man. I like him. I got nothing against him, but I'm definitely gonna make orphans of his children.
When is the last time to people called eachother out(In the same weight class) and
The fight didn’t get put together. I guess all fighters should know by now if they want a certain fight all they have to do is go to Twitter and start talking about it.

gotta go with pettis here
Much more versatile striking, better endurance, and the mat savvy to fend off Lauzon’s traditional 1st round storm

I think Pettis leaves himself open a plenty, Lauzon has sneaky power in his punches.
Though I favor Pettis, I wouldn’t be terribly shocked if Lauzon was somehow able to finish the fight in a grappling sequence initiated by Pettis getting rocked and taken down. But what I consider to be the most likely scenario is Lauzon tiring and getting pummeled in the late rounds, for a relatively safe 29-28 W for Pettis.
"I don't care, hit him with your groin!"
Lauzon has sneaky power in his punches.
This.
Lauzon’s boxing is highly underrated, and he does possess some good power. Most of his submissions have been set up with punches (Guillard, Warburton, Reinhardt, Ruediger), and let’s not forget his clean KO of Pulver.

He lost pretty badly on the feet against Stout though
Granted Stout’s no slouch with the hands, but I think Roufus can get Pettis’ striking to the point that he can take the fight to deep water and get a win.
Ego?
When I think of fighters with big ego’s, Joe Lauzon isn’t even on the list..
K-1 Level Predictions Team
I meant Anthony's ego won't be as bad as Melvin's,
which to me, is why Guillard got caught. Anthony will play this fight smart.
Jon Fitch via Decision
I got Lauzon on this one, but close fight
Also, Pettis beat Stephens by split, and lost to Guida by unanimous. It’s wrong on the post.

looks like the UFC is not mailing it in for this card after all
it may be at 8 am in the morning or whatever, but they are still making an effort.
and anyway, is mma at 8 am really the end of the world?
It's going to be morning in Japan,
to accommodate it being broadcast live at primetime here in the states.

winner should get the next title shot
more so for lauzon if he finishes showtime.
pettis maybe one more win before a title shot if he wins this

They might appreciate it, I think they like the lighter weight guys
I wonder how the timings gonna work for this card in America I think Japan is like 12 hours ahead.

They're doing it at 8am local time
So it will be normal Primetime here in the states

Yeah, maybe, I don’t know. I just think these guys must be virtually unkown in Japan, and it would have been more well-received by the crowds in the US. Like I said it’s a great fight, but I don’t see it selling any tickets in Japan, that’s all. Same with Bendo – Edgar.
by Horselover Fat on Nov 16, 2011 12:30 PM EST up reply actions
Point?
Japan doesn’t care about their own MMA scene. If they don’t care about badass fights like these, then they don’t deserve to watch them.

So are you saying that the UFC should just stack the card with former pride guys?
because right now the card has
- a top 5 MW in Okami (who is also Japanese, obviously).
- The LW Champion vs. an exciting #1 Challenge (who is half Korean..which isn’t the same as Japanese, but will help with the general Asian population)
- The former #1 Contender in the 170 lbs division vs. one of the most famous/popular Japanese fighters in Akiyama…
Now they get a fight with two guys who are fringe top 10-15 lightweights…
K-1 Level Predictions Team
They are already packing in a good amount of Asian fighters on this card, so having fights like Lauzon vs Pettis and Bendo vs Edgar shouldn’t be that big a deal to the ticket sales. They get a Title fight as well, so there’s some novelty in that. What should hurt ticket sales is that it starts at Japan at 8am, and not the gaijin that are on the card.

Hope they come out for it.

I think Pettis outstrikes him at range, but I’m all over the Lauzon War Wagon.

When is Guilard going to fight again?
C’mon Joe Silva! One loss and you make Guillard disappear from the MMA map? Get Melvin back in the mix soon. I love Joe, but I got Pettis winning this one. But if Joe someone pulls this off, I’ll never go against him again cause that would be two very, very tough opponents he has defeated.
Guillard should fight Jim Miller or Gray Maynard.

Forgot to mention....
Even though UFC 144 will be in Japan. I hope we don’t see any Japanese fighters on the card. Man the only way a Japanese fighter will win is if he is against another Japanese fighter. They are so bad. I understand Aikiyama is on against Shields, so we already know the outcome.
I'm a big fan of both of these guys
But…WAR LAUZON. Dude is a savage. RNC round 1. No can defend.
Fun fact:
Lauzon has had 11 fights in the UFC and has received bonuses for 9 of those!
How could this fight be anything other than awesome?!
The thing with Lauzon is that he generally looks great in the first round, but fades in the second and third rounds, and I see that happening in this fight. I have Pettis winning as he is strong defensively on the feet, and his BJJ should allow him not to get submitted. Offensively and in the later rounds, he should be able to edge out Lauzon.
