Yushin Okami vs. Tim Boetsch On Tap for UFC 144 in Japan

Photo

Yesterday came word of a top Japanese fighter getting his place on the UFC 144 card in Japan. Today, another one was booked for the card, and he's going to be facing a Barbarian on February 26th. UFC.com with the info:

Middleweight contender Yushin Okami will get a home game in his first bout since his UFC 134 clash with Anderson Silva when he takes on Tim Boetsch in UFC 144 action on February 26th.

"Undefeated since dropping down to middleweight, Tim ‘The Barbarian’ Boetsch has verbally agreed to face top three ranked Yushin ‘Thunder’ Okami February 26th in Tokyo, Japan," said UFC President Dana White.

Okami will fight in Japan for the first time in almost six years when he steps into the octagon to face Boetch. His last fight on home soil was a TKO win over Izuru Takeuchi in June of 2006, the fight before he signed with the UFC. Okami is currently training in Japan with a litany of top fighters including Dong Hyun Kim, Yoshihiro Akiyama, and Tatsuya Kawajiri.

Boetsch dropped to middleweight after a lopsided loss to Phil Davis at UFC 123 and has looked quite impressive so far. He thoroughly beat down both Kendall Grove and Nick Ring to take unanimous decisions in both bouts. This is a gigantic step up in competition for The Barbarian though.

The card will be headlined by a UFC lightweight title fight between Frankie Edgar and Ben Henderson.

I’m worried about Okami’s clinch (and wrestling) and Boetsch’s cardio… Not so Okami’s striking, IMO.

by Diz D on Nov 15, 2011 3:57 PM EST up reply actions

I think their wrestling will largely cancel each other out,

but I consider Okami to be the crisper, more focused striker, and will likely take the decision. The Barb gets sloppy and tired.

He gets sloppy when tired...

Otherwise, I think he’ll have a slight edge in standup (more diverse, hits harder)… but I agree Okami throws straighter punches and is better at cutting off the ring.

Okami punched his way to victory in that fight. Nate actually hit 3/4 takedowns to Okami’s 1/9 (although I don’t think that non- slam takedowns have any bearing on a fight’s scoring, anyways).

Yushin pretty much boxed his way to victory in that fight.

You have been mentioning this, but what is it about Boetsch’s striking that’s better than Okami’s? He may have more punching power, but otherwise, I’ve seen Boetsch get pretty sloppy and reckless. In none of his fights, I just haven’t seen that good of striking technique from Boetsch, just power. It’s not bad, but it’s not great either, and I’ve seen Okami throw the more crisp strikes.

Progressing up the ladder doesn’t mean you’re destined to lose. I think the fact that Okami struggles with bigger grapplers should tell the tale of this fight. Okami could definitely pick him apart standing, but I just see a Boetsch party breaking out.

Struggles with bigger grapplers? Which grapplers are you referring to? Chael Sonnen? I seriously hope you’re not comparing Tim Boetsch to Chael Sonnen. That would be silly. Outright silly.

Okami easily stuffed Munoz and boxed him up, Okami took down Marquardt and frustrated him, lets not forget what this man has done in light of the Anderson Silva drubbing.

Utter nonsense. He was taken down a couple of times but he was never outwrestled until he met Sonnen. You also conveniently leave out the details of each of those fights. Marquardt was also taken down by Okami, Evan Tanner never took Okami down (please do not pull shit out of your ass) and the majority of the Rich Franklin fight was spent in the clinch.

To say that Okami has trouble with stronger American wrestlers is the same as saying Anderson has trouble with stronger American wrestlers because Hendo and Sonnen took him down.

Nobody is discounting Boetsch but you’re clearly discounting Okami.

I'm not going to go back and watch his fights to list specific examples

All I will say is that guys like Munoz have tried pressing him against the fence and powering through a takedown that way, and have had horrible results. Marquardt got a few quick takedowns, but they weren’t from the clinch. Nate showed incredible speed with his shots, although Okami got right back up and proved impossible to pin down.

The last guy to make Yushin work from his back was Rich Franklin, and Okami nearly ripped his arm off with a kimura.

Are you serious?

Like I said- the majority of Boetsch’s takedowns are from the clinch. He doesn’t have a great shot. Okami is very good at stuffing takedowns, especially those originating from the clinch. He’s very strong, has great hips and a rock solid base, digs those underhooks and is VERY hard to take down.

I’m saying that Tim will have a very hard time taking him down, and like I said- Okami is a crisper puncher and I think he will outstrike Boetsch.

No, you were talking specifically about the clinch, which is the one and only thing I replied to, you’re not saying Tim will have a very hard time taking him down. I just hate all these conclusions people draw from other things that aren’t true. I asked because I’m a huge Yushin Okami fan and this is not a conclusion I’ve drawn from watching him fight. The clinch bit is weak and not at all a fact because you have nothing to cite. Not even a specific fight.

Kid, Omigawa too?

I’ve been overwhelmed and I’ve been underwhelmed. Can I ever just be whelmed?

Tim Boetsch has the cardio of BJ and Akiyama combined

Actually looked decent his last fight

Plus the fact it was altitude, I don’t think his cardio is that much of issue at MW.

The key is to hit the guy in the jaw really hard before the other guy does it to you.

Very good fight

Either Okami is going to stay near the top of the division…or Boetsch is going to become a new contender.

Huge opportunity for a big rankings upset here.

Anyway ...

The Barbarian wins this one. Okami is massively overrated. The key is aggression – and I think Tim will actually bring it. At that point, Okami wilts and is defeated. Done.

Tempted to pick Boetsch

Gotta love Redneck Judo even though Okami is clearly the better fighter.

I respect your opinion even though it's wrong.
