One thing that has been a consensus among most fans, and even non-fans, is that they dropped the ball by showing only one fight. While Junior dos Santos knocking out Cain to win the title was exciting there was a big problem. We all watched an hour of hype for a 64 second fight. Going into the fight most were upset that the Clay Guida vs. Ben Henderson title eliminator fight wasn't going to be shown. After that fight happened we all realized it was a travesty that it wasn't shown.
We can't fix the past, but Zuffa can learn from it. During the press conference it was announced that Ben Henderson would get his shot versus Frankie Edgar when the UFC makes a trip to Japan for UFC 144. Its clear this should be the first "official" UFC on Fox Event for three big reasons.
- Ben Henderson is a future star - Whenever this guy fights his energy seems to take over the crowd. He's a high paced fighter and never puts on bad fights. He also has the other needs for a star as he's good looking and well put together. If he wins the title he's primed to fill the star vacuum that was created when BJ Penn lost to Frankie. They dropped the ball in featuring him once before. They cannot do this again.
- This card is not gonna sell anyway - Frankie Edgar just can't draw. Dude was involved in two of the top five fights of the year and people still don't give a crap about him. If he beats Ben Henderson in a war, which is likely, in front of 5-7 million people it would raise the profile of him in the future. In addition to having a possible Rampage Jackson versus Shogun Rua fight as the lead in would make it a good watch. So instead of dealing with another 200K buy rate they should give it to Fox. Zuffa doesn't really seem like they're fully behind it anyway.
- There will be no major sports competition - The NFL season is going to be done, the event is gonna be on 2/26, and the NBA season looks like it's going to get cancelled. So they wouldn't need to worry about it conflicting with anything major besides possibly a tennis tournament. It would also be a couple of weeks before March Madness starts so that is avoided also.
There are even the small details as this will be a "big fight" since it is for the title and it's something that even if it goes 25 minutes there is no worry about it being a bad fight. It's too perfect to not do.
