Is Junior dos Santos a specialist?

Stay connected for news and updates

Last night, something about the analysis of the JDS versus Cain fight really bugged me.  I kept hearing JDS being labeled as a specialist, a boxer, and even a throwback to the early days of MMA, when it was one style versus another.  As I was listening, I kept wondering if there was any truth to this at all.  When I think of a specialist, I think of a person who brings one exceptional skill to the fight, while having glaring weaknesses in other areas.

Junior simply does not strike me as that kind of fighter.  Yes, he has incredible hands but he is also a well rounded fighter, in my opinion.  His game is solid in every aspect, it's just that he is very gifted striker.  What reason does he have to bring a fight out of his wheelhouse?  If you have a well rounded game but one aspect of it is exceptional(that's just about every top fighter), why wouldn't you utilize your greatest skill to the fullest?  The man has the most lethal hands in the division and we all want to seem him use them.

So I leave you with two questions.  In your opinion, what do you consider to be a specialist, and how can a fighter prove themselves to be well rounded?
