Last night, new and old UFC fans saw a fight for the heavyweight championship of the world. When the average person thinks big fights, more often than not, they think heavyweights. In addition to promoting this fights for months with multiple types of media, the UFC did something different. For the first half hour of the broadcast, they had dana White, Brock Lesnar and some other commentator discuss the fighters. This may have helped some viewers learn about the quiet champ Cain Velasquez and the happy go lucky JDS. However, when the fans turned on the fight they watched a one minute beat down. While everyone likes a finish, especially by knockout, I believe many people were left wanting more. The UFC should have included at least one more fight on fox and not the jabroni station Fuel.
Granted, it is often impossible to predict how exciting a fight is going to be, unless your name is Chris Lytle, Brock Lesnar, Chris Leben, BJ Penn OR Clay Guida and Benson Henderson! Clay Guida and Benson Henderson always fight to win instead of fighting to not lose. (a la Tim Sylvia once he gained the title) Clay and Benson have never had a boring fight in the UFC or WEC and more often than not, win fight of the night! You could almost guarantee that these two were going to but on a hell of a show. The UFC would have gained so many more fans if any of the above fighters would have been shown on FOX.
The UFC could have still kept the 30 minute build up at the beginning of the show. However, they should have sandwiched the breakdown of the title fight with the Clay/Benson fight. New fans would have been shown a great grappling, striking and clinch game. During the fight both fighters were dropped with punches, both went for submissions and the scrambling made for a fight that you could not afford to blink.
Instead, the UFC got a good title fight but a quick one. Since heavyweights finish fights at a much higher rate, the UFC should have had a back up plan and the Clay/Benson fight would have been just that.
